Chapter 16

Branch stayed on his half of the shared bedroom working on his Engineering class homework. His ears twitched at the choas his roommate created in search of a letter. There weren't any loud crashes or thumping or booming clashs since the human was not the throwing his stuff willy nilly type but, the rummaging through his draws, under his bed and in the secret storage which was a converted hallow space under the weakest floor boards was enough to provoke a couple side eyes out of the grey troll. Shaking his head the troll dragged the borrowed screwdriver twice as bigger than his own body wait across the dresser. The metal didn't scratch the wood nor make a sound but, Branch did grunting at the weight.

" You said it came in,right?" Guy asked.

" Yeah. Mama Bear dropped it on your bed. " Branch dropped the tool before his feet.

Guy placed the weak and loose floor board back into place. Raising his foot he stomped down on the wood casuing a corner to crack but, not break apart. Grimacing at the minor damage the human pushed two heavy shoe boxes with his foot over the entire floor board. There. Nobody should notice or at least not Mama Bear. Hopefully...

"Checked there. Didn't see it."

To further prove his statement the bigger bodied orphan moved to his somewhat messy bed. Unorganized homework, temporay markers,a pen and little plastic marker board with a sloth drawing in orange marker were scattered on the blanket. The pillows had cleaner cases but,the pillows themselves were flatten. A sock sell off the headboard landing on the wooden floors. Guy grabbed his pillows lifting them up however before he could comment, a still sealed letter fell out from within one of the pillow cases. Branch's eyes followed the letter unimpressed while Guy heard the paper's landing loudly.

He looked down. " Oh... " Guy dropped the pillows. "Nevermind. "

Branch rolled his eyes as the pillows softly landed off center from their original placement. Swiftly snatching the envelope the tall human paced away from his bed closer to his roommate. Sparks of excitement and nervousness lighted his eyes while they fixed on the fate revealing thin item between his long fingers. Shifting his view back to his engineering project the grey troll glanced at the blueprint taped to the wall. It had a in great deatil drawing of simple wind turbine inner works. Nothing fancy. Decent enough design to possibly get 80%. One corner of the blueprint partly leaned forward unsticking to the wall.

" Oh another future career change. Goodie. " Branch remarked. "What happened to your whole inventor stick?"

Chucking Guy scratched his forehead then opened the wrinkled envelope. Luckily the stamped application wasn't damaged or wrinkled. The internship form featured a dried newly added green stamp of approval and the Police Station logo up in up right corner. Pulling out the entire unfolded document Guy smiled. A wave of relief washed over him followed by a growing size of his smile. His soul burnt brighter like he had started a new passion project.

" It's called exploring my options and who says I can't do it all? "

Turning his head Branch opened his mouth about to speak.

"Don't answer that. I won't accept a "Me." Guy remarked jokingly.

Narrowing his eyes the troll closed his mouth bitterly. The glare within those blue pools sharpen fixing their sights on the happy human. Holding back a lighthearted laugh Guy looked away from the stink eye his roommate was giving him. Sharing a room for so long was quite interesting and fun despite the personality and world view differences. Maybe Guy enjoyed it more than Branch but, hey Branch could had asked for a room swap and didn't so perhaps he liked their sharing situation more than he admitted. Mama Bear allowed the orphans to swap roommates from time to time if the teens and kids simply couldn't get along and was very vocal about it being alright to submit that request to her.

" For the record, I wasn't gonna say that but, fine. Have it your way. " Branch shook his head. " What internship or new side thing did you sign up for this time? "

" The Police station. " Guy folded the paper.

Branch blinked confused and a little surprised. " Their doing internships now?"

Guy put the form back into the envelope. " Kinda. It's new and I was the only one there handing in my application. "

Nodding his head Branch processed his space sharer's words. The local Police Station wasn't the best and might be outdated by a few or more years due to budget cuts but, otherwise the officers did their best with they had. Normally they refused to open up internships but, clearly the big boss decided to open up the gates of opportunities and Guy took it. No surprise there considering the bigger teenager's track record when it came to new possibilities.

" So a cop? " Branch guessed.

" I was thinking detective but, I won't say "No" to that opportunity." Guy chuckled.

Branch raised an eyebrow. " You? A detective? Alright. I'll bite. "Branch smirked. "What got you so hyped up?"

" I wanna help people." Guy's smile soften.

Stepping back over to his bed Guy pulled out his nightstand draw placing the open enveloped inside. The draw was filled with mostly accepted old internship forms which Guy had either completed or quit during his holiday breaks. The few rejected ones got picked up and thrown into the trash bin. The busy teen's smile never left.

" And? You were already doing that before." Branch pointed out.

Grabbing a piece of the cheap brown tape from it's roll,Branch pulled the large piece out then torn it off. The ripping sound broke through the short lived silence. Whipping out his black hair it converted into a ladder. Climbing up to the top Branch held firmly onto the sticky material and forced the leaning corner back against the wall. Slapping the fresh tape over it Branch didn't notice Guy using his knee to push the nightstand draw closed.

" I'm not going back to retail. " Guy stated bluntly breaking his usual character.

Branch's ears perked. " There it is. Let me guess. " Branch looked back knowingly. " Fired or quit to save your sanity?"

" It just didn't work out and I still have my will to live."

Reaching for the board eraser Guy picked it up along with the plastic board. He sat down on his messy bed swiping away the art attempt. Refusing to look up Guy just watched his sloth vanish. Spending the summer as a retail worker for the cash was a real eye opener for the human boy. He still wanted to make an impact on others but, not in the environment where the worst of people came alive for no rational reason. If he had stayed any longer Guy would had stopped being a people person for weeks unapologetically.

" Fired. Got ya. Good luck being some detective's unpaid assistant." Branch remarked supportively.

Climbing down the ladder of hair Branch looked down making sure he didn't miss a single step. Troll hair was more stable and stronger than most non-trolls would expect so Branch wasn't worried about how structurely sound his makeshift ladder was. Losing footing was different a story. Once his little grey feet touched and settled on the dresser the black hair returned back to it's natural state and original length. Guy finally looked up from his board redirecting his gaze to his roommate surprised but, happier.

" At least your not shooting me down this time." Guy chimed.

" I'm being realistic. If my orphan life has taught me anything,it's don't get lost in fantasy or else you'll be disappointed. Learnt that hard way over and over again." Branch shrugged.

Guy bit down on his lower lip. His positivity dimming at the familiar sadly bitter tone laced within the troll's phrasing. Even an idealist mindset couldn't under the hurt Branch was pretending be causal about. Guy had his own fair share of experiences but, he knew how different it was for him verses Branch. So very different...

" The adoption interviews?" Guy muttered knowingly.

" Guy, you and me both know teenagers like us don't get adopted. People want babies or little kids. Not us. Especially not grey ones. They just see a moody and angst loaded teen. " Branch stately bluntly. "I have no idea how you stay so positive and idealistic all the time."

The little phone small enough to fit in Branch's hand dinged. Flocking to it immediately for distraction Branch unfortunately distanced himself after opening up. One text from Jack followed by three from Poppy. Hiccup sent a photo of Toothless acting like a cat again by chasing a red laser in the forest.

" Wanna do something you probably call me "stupid" for roping you into?" Jack texted.

" Hey" " So what ya doing?" " My sister is visiting soon. Can't wait to hug her. She would totally love to meet you. She loves all of my friends she meets. " Poppy texted.

" I swear dragons are just giant cats with scales and wings. " Hiccup texted.

" Branch..." Guy called out softly with empathy.

Then there was a knock at the door. It wasn't until Guy stated it was open did the door be pushed into the bedroom, revealing Mama Bear. The sweet caretaker running the orphanage. She smiled at the boys carefully letting go of the door handle. The little kids of different kind of species, big and small, ran through the hall not caring about the noise they were making.

" How are you, Sweetie Pies, feeling? Branch, you got another interview. This might be the one. Their excited to meet you, love. " Mama Bear hyped up gently.

Branch sighed. " I'll be there in a minute..."

Branch turned off his phone kicking the tool In front of his feet out the way. The friendly bear smilled encouragingly waiting for him to come down into her paw. Whipping out his hair Branch grabbed the top of the door then swang onto the open paw. Guy bit his cheek still feeling the heavy wait of their convertsation. Despite both teens sharing the same sad and unfortunate prediction in their minds,Mama Bear carried the troll away still being hopeful. She wanted the best outcome for all the orphans under her care.

" Their gonna love you once they see the real you. I have a good feeling about this family. " Mama Bear spoke wishfully.

Mama Bear was wrong. Branch was right. Guy silently wished that this wasn't the case that Sunday morning.
