"So, I just...walk up to her?"

"Yes."

"Just like that?"

"Just like that."

"Are you sure? I mean, maybe-"

"Dude," Kai set down his water bottle that he had currently been chugging to give Cole a look. "You're way over complicating this. You literally just walk up to her and say hi. Simple. Period. No strings attached." Lloyd gave him a confused look. No strings attached? That wasn't what he remembered from girls.

Cole looked uncertain, his eyes glancing at the girl standing behind the counter with a smile on her face. She was beautiful. Tanned skin, curvy body type, freckles, beautiful bright brown eyes, and light brown hair that fell in full, luxurious, curls.

"There you are!" Nya stood in front of them, hands on her hips as she scowled down at them. "We were looking everywhere for you guys."

The group had separated during their shopping trip. Nya, Jay, Zane, and Pixal were getting the tech and groceries while Kai, Cole, and Lloyd were supposed to be running other errands like toiletries. Instead they were kicked out of the drug store for messing around and went to the cake store to see Cole's secret crush.

"Sorry?" Lloyd gave a sheepish smile. "We were......hungry!"

Jay plunked down beside his best friend, dropping the bag of most likely valuable and delicate parts onto the table carelessly. "Cole's always hungry." He snickered loudly.

"No, I'm not!" Cole hastily cut in, glancing nervously at the girl still manning the cash. She gave a smile to the next customer as she chatted them up.

"Yeah, you are!" Jay argued. Nya squinted at the master of earth, her eyes widening as she followed his gaze. Kai and Lloyd's teasing smiles helped her piece the puzzle together. Jay kept on blabbering. "Remember when you ate so much noodles that you-"

Nya coughed loudly, sliding beside her boyfriend. She nudged him hard in the ribs, making him wheeze.

"What did you do that for?" Jay rasped.

Nya gave him a pointed look. He just stared back.

"Cole has a crush on the cake-girl." Kai informed him, boredly.

Jay's mouth formed a perfect 'o' as Cole yelped in betrayal. Cole blanched when the girl glanced his way. "N-no I don't!" He hissed.

She smiled as she met his eyes, dimples forming in the corner of her mouth as she passed over someone's baked treat before turning to grab something from behind her. Cole stared at her, this faraway look in his eyes as he watched her laugh with her coworkers.

"Oh, he has it bad." Nya teased, exchanging amused looks with Pixal.

The female Nindroid turned to the master of earth expectantly. "How do you hope to win this girl's affections so that you can one day court her?" Cole opened his mouth. Then closed it again.

"Do you know her name by any chance?" Zane prompted.

"Er..." Cole smiled sheepishly.

Jay gasped dramatically. "Cole! You have to at least know her name!"

"I know her name!' Cole protested.

"No, you don't!" Lloyd threw him an incredulous look. "You barely even talk to her! You just fumbled to order your mini cake and leave!"

"Cole, you have to go introduce yourself!" Jay said desperately, shaking the boy around.

Kai shifted so he was sitting up, throwing an arm over the raven's shoulders. "Ask her to join us for lunch!"

"You're getting cake and you didn't even have lunch!" Nya wrinkled her nose at the boys, who looked anywhere but her eyes.

"I'm not inviting her for lunch!" Cole protested.

"Don't be a chicken, Cole!" Jay whined, wiggling in between the taller boy and the table so he could shove Cole off of the booth.

"No, no- JAY!"

Cole yelled out as Jay leaned against Kai, much to the master of fire's protest, and used his feet to pummel him out of his seat. People in the shop sent them concerned looks as Cole was shoved onto the ground.

"You got this, buddy." Lloyd stood and have him a fist pump before Nya shooed him towards the line.

Cole blinked when he suddenly found himself in front of the cake displays. "How did this happen?" He muttered to himself, rubbing his eyes with the hand that wasn't in his pockets. He heard the snickers and whoops from his friends, safely in their seats by the window.

To his mortification the line moved quickly. Pretty soon he was standing right in front of the pretty girl. First Spinjitzu master, if you ever cared about me before please help or this is going to end horribly. Cole internally prayed. The girl gave him a funny look as he just stood there, gaping at her.

"Can I help you?" She finally said slowly.

Cole blinked rapidly. "Oh! Hi, I'm Cole." He said stupidly. She waited patiently.

"Um...what do you recommend..." He cast a sneaky look at the name tag on her pink apron. "A-o-lani." He winced. I totally butchered that name.

That seemed to smooth something over in the awkwardness between them. A-o-lani chuckled. "It's Aolani." The name slid of her tongue so easily. Her voice was smooth and the foreign name with the accent was beautiful coming from her lips. Cole was so entranced he almost missed what she said next. "My family is from the islands just off the tip of Ninjago. We have some...different names."

She smiled that gorgeous smile of hers. "You can call me Lani."

"O-oh..." Cole stuttered. He nodded. "Cool."

"As for my cake recommendation, on this lovely afternoon I'd say a the lemon cake with cream cheese frosting." Lani gestured to the petite little cake with carefully piped decor. "It's great for a nice summer day."

"I-I'll have one of those." Cole swallowed as she got it. "Thank you." He added meekly. She gave him another friendly grin.

Cole glanced back at his friends. They were giving him thumbs up and gestures go keep going. Well... Kai was looking at his phone and fixing his hair.

"Uh... Would you like to join my friends and I for lunch?" Cole blurted out quickly, turning back to her just as she handed over the plate. Lani almost dropped it in surprise.

"O-oh." Lani was the one stumbling over her words now. Cheeks warming as all the fellow workers in the shop and the people in the line all stopped what they were doing to stare at them. "Well...actually I can't...I have work."

Cole felt a stag of disappointment. "Okay...sorry to bother you." He tried not to sound to pathetic as he grabbed his cake and went to make his escape, face burning red.

"But I get off around four thirty." Lani continued quickly. Cole whipped around to stare at her, bewildered. "Maybe we could go for dinner?" Her eyes were hopeful.

"Oh! Yeah, sure!" Cole couldn't stop the goofy boyish smile spreading on his face. "I'll come around four thirty to pick you up then."

"Okay, great." The awkward yet giddy laugh erupted from her as Cole practically skipped away to where the ninja team was packing up and leaving. The cake slid on his plate as he handed it to Jay.

"Woah!" Jay's eyes widened in surprise. Cole never shared his cake.

Cole's eyes were bright and sparkling as he glanced back at Lani who looked back shyly. "I have a date." He says excitedly.
