Chapter 10
A piercing cry filled the air followed by a baby's wailing. Where was the baby? It was too dark to see anyone else. A slithering whisper filled the void with its disturbing mantra, "You'll always be alone. You'll always be alone. You'll always be alone."
The baby's crying became louder until it suddenly stopped. The whisper's prediction became truth.
Dani awoke with a groan.
"Ms. Deleon? Ms. Deleon are you okay?"
Dani opened her eyes and saw faces above her that she didn't recognize.
"It looks like she took a pretty big spill, but she'll be alright," a male in his late thirties said as he flashed a light in Dani's eyes. "Did you get dirt in your eyes when you fell? They look irritated." He had light brown hair and eyes that reminded Dani of green obsidian.
"Who...who are you?" Dani croaked, trying to raise a hand to her aching head.
A gentle hand held hers and placed it back down, "Don't try to move too much. You fell by the lake and hit your head on a rock. You were unconscious when we found you."
"The lake?" Dani didn't know what he was talking about but forced herself to endure his touch. The doctor checked her reflexes, her pupils, and asked her several questions that Dani was able to easily answer.
"Yes, the lake. Don't you remember? Does your head hurt, Ms. Deleon?" the man asked.
Dani shook her head, "No, I feel fine. I mean...it feels a little painful but not from a headache. More like from being hit. I'm sorry. I didn't catch your name."
"I'm Bart Silverman. Dr. Bart Silverman. You seem to be fine other than not remembering the lake. Perhaps we should take you to the hospital."
"No! I'd rather not go to the hospital please," Dani cried. Accidentally being touched by people in the hospital always led to horrible dreams.
"Are you sure she doesn't have a concussion?" a female voice that Dani didn't recognize asked.
"Where's her fiance?" Dr. Silverman asked.
"He's outside with Bo. I asked Bo to keep him calm since he was acting like a roaring lion earlier," the woman named Shelly explained.
"Well they are engaged," Dr. Silverman reminded her. "It's no wonder he was so upset."
"I know that doctor but still...he was acting like someone did this to her on purpose. It was clear as day that it was an accident."
"Be that as it may, go outside and let him know she's conscious."
Dani heard a door open and close, "Where am I?"
"You're in your cabin right now. Your intended carried you in here. My wife and I are both doctors, plus we have several nurses on staff here. You're in good hands. Trust me."
Dani closed her eyes to try and process everything Dr. Silverman had just said.
"Dani?" Hearing Jax's voice, Dani opened her eyes.
"Jax?"
"Dani are you alright? Tell me you're alright Panda Eyes," Jax kissed her forehead and held her cheeks in his palms.
"Jax," Dani whispered, pulling her head out of his grasp.
"I'm right here. Does anything hurt? Are you okay?"
"Jax...where...where are we?"
It took a moment for him to understand what she was asking, " What do you mean? We're in our cabin. We're at Majestic Waters, remember?"
Dani touched her forehead and looked away, "Our cabin?"
"Right, our cabin. Dani, why did you go to the lake? What happened out there? How did you fall?" Jax asked.
"The lake?" Dani felt like a parrot. An idiotic parrot. "I don't know what you're talking about. What's going on?"
"You were found by the lake, Dani. You were out cold. You scared the Hell out of me and that's not an easy thing to do."
"I went to the lake?"
"Okay, something's not right here. Dani...what's the last thing you remember?" the panic in Jax's voice was rising.
"Well, I...I..remember you picking me up to go to Majestic Waters."
"That was earlier today. Don't you remember what happened by the lake? What happened in this cabin earlier?" he asked, his eyes narrowing in frustration.
Dani shook her head, "I'm sorry Jax."
"It sounds like that fall knocked more than the wind out of you," Dr. Silverman said as he instructed Dani to lie back down. He turned towards Jax, "Don't worry, her memories of what happened may return. In any event, make sure she stays up for the next couple of hours."
Shelly, Bo, and Dr. Silverman left the cabin, leaving Dani to deal with an irate Jax Michaels.
"What the Hell were you thinking Dani? What if no one had found you? Do you know how worried I was?"
"I'm sorry Jax. I don't know what to say other than stop yelling at me because it's not helping."
Jax was about to start yelling again when his phone rang. It was his partner, Roberto Montoya.
"I'm sorry to call so late but I just remembered you wanted info on that Tammy Owens woman. Gladys was watching some Sandra Dee movie that reminded me to call you. Tammy and the Doctor or something like that," Roberto was about to go on when Jax stopped him.
"Spare me the details Montoya. Dani got hurt."
"Already?"
"What do you mean already?" Jax hissed.
"Nothing. I don't mean anything. It's just that you two sort of attract trouble," Roberto answered. "Is she okay?"
"She's got a pretty nasty bump on the head but she says she's fine and the doctor here said she'd be okay,"Jax answered.
"That's good. About Tammy Owens, she hasn't been with her parents. We tried tracing the cell but it was a no go. Her phone was switched off," Roberto said.
"Hell. So that means she's probably missing too," Jax muttered looking at Dani who was still in bed. He disconnected the call with Roberto and turned to Dani. "I've gotten news about Tammy."
"She's missing, isn't she?" Dani asked.
Jax nodded.
"My dreams don't lie. As horrifying as they can be sometimes, they're always truthful. They always reveal what's in a person's heart," Dani said softly.
"I thought you only saw someone's nightmares. How can that reveal what's in a person's heart?"
She thought of the strange dream she just had and answered, "Where do you think fear lives if not a person's heart?
"Their brain," Jax said simply. "Our mind plays tricks on us and makes us think things are scary when they're really not."
Dani shook her head, "Whether you're afraid of lettuce, clowns, or serial killers the brain can't control your fear. Why? I'll tell you why. Because fear can consume you and the only way to confront it is with your heart."
"Dani, I'm not following you," Jax said, confused.
"It's okay. You don't have to. Someday, you'll understand," Dani stood up. "Jax we need to have an important conversation."
Jax thought of his confession to her earlier along with their kiss. Did she really forget all of that? He felt it would be too embarrassing to try again so soon. Perhaps it wasn't meant to be just yet. He looked at Dani who was gnawing on her bottom lip, "What did you want to talk about?'
"Sleeping arrangements. I call shotgun on the bed."
"Why am I not surprised?" Jax mumbled. "You know this bed is big enough for us to share?"
"True, but you still have to sleep on the sofa," Dani crossed her arms.
"I'm supposed to keep you up, remember?" Jax smiled. "I can't do that from the sofa."
Dani lifted her phone, "I'll be reading a book on my phone. You don't have to worry about me."
Jax and Dani argued for a few more minutes before he finally gave up, took a shower, and fell asleep on the sofa. Once midnight had hit, Dani felt restless. She couldn't sleep but didn't want to read anymore either. She found herself sneaking out of the cabin, a map in hand.
She wanted to see the lake where she had been found. She was careful in following the map's directions, with only the light of the moon to guide her.
"It's beautiful," Dani whispered to herself after she had found it. The lake was bathed in the moonlight and trees lined it in the distance. She almost lost her footing on the small pebbles that led towards the lake. She was standing at the water's edge, when she closed her eyes and took in the night's sounds. She felt a light breeze brush against her and despite being alone, she felt at ease. She remembered the pamphlets telling her that Majestic Lake had been blessed. She hadn't believed it but standing next to the large body of water, she couldn't help but feel tranquil.
Dani was so wrapped up in her thoughts that she didn't hear the man approaching her from behind. When his arms wrapped around her torso and his lips touched her neck, her scream got caught in her throat.
Dani acted on instinct. She shoved an elbow in his stomach, kicked his shin, whirled around and brought her knee up to his groin, causing him to release her and bend over in pain, "What the Hell are you doing? Weren't you the one that asked me to meet you here?"
Dani took a step back away from the dark-haired man, fists up, before asking, "Meet you here? Who the Hell are you?"
