Sangeet Night
The stars in the sky laid awake.
Rustle of cold, sea breeze caressing them.
They were restless since the weekend. For the second most important event in a Hindu ritual had arrived. They would bare witness to a night of emotions, music and joy. Heck, even the sky stood still with bated breath, eager to peak in and see the most touted to be Sangeet for the decade.
Both the families had come in full swing for the night and the one after this. Since Alia belonged to a prominent power family, her parents and uncles went on to invite the whole of Bollywood! From technicians to superstars, media to politicians ... this night would be jam packed and would certainly be remembered for posterity.
The venue was set at Karan's spacious farmhouse lawn in Alibaug. He had insisted to contribute a venue for at least one of the big event. Alia's parents staged their home for Mehendi and Haldi functions and Sidharth's parents took the wedding venue responsibilities. Therefore Karan and his Dharma family with profound elation took upon themselves the solid rights of a true blue blooded cinematic Sangeet, dharma way of course.
Members of the media were allowed to set themselves in a makeshift platform right outside the farmhouse, on the other side of the road. Police force was hired to maintain road discipline, crowd handling and to stop unwanted traffic jam. Outskirt roads were completely blocked so as to not let any outsider/fans to crowd around the venue. The main road leading to the farmhouse were security tight and only let premium vehicles carrying important faces to go inside.
A red carpet had been rolled in front of the massive gate to let the celebrities pose for the media. After their duty was over, prominent media heads were allowed entry to the ceremony with an e invitation (accessible only for invited guests). The posh lane around the venue was drowned in fairy lights.
The decorations for the last two big events were out of the world.
Inside the gate, guests were ushered into a special LED fairy lighted tunnel, glowing bright with spectacular colours. It was the onset of awe and wonder. Once they crossed the tunnel, they would walk through a glass lantern lit path to reach the main lawn that screamed 'PERFECTION'.
The lawn sparkled like a fairy dripped in lights and glamour.
Chairs were arranged in the middle just below the grand stage. Food stalls, DJ corner, additional dance floor and a massive bar counter were placed on either sides. Guests had started to fill in the seats, suddenly occupying the once vacant garden. There was even a poolside arrangement for those who wanted to seclude and yet enjoy the function. But to everyone's delight, the stage was something worth staring.
Soft lights illuminated the platform and threw its myriad colours even to the farthest corner of the huge garden. The setting was everything magical. More dreamy than the couple could ever wish for. Their family members had already arrived and so did the prolific guests. Karan, parents and siblings of the couple, their close friends and the stars of the night - Sidharth and Alia were all inside the bungalow. They were waiting to make an entry worth remembering.
As per the choreographers instruction, the soon to be wedded pair along with their parents, siblings and the squad, were supposed to come down in a couple procession. The rehearsals for this entry was hilarious to begin with. And little Armaan was the only un-paired individual (Adhiraj was hard to convince joining) on the list. So he would come with his Kayyjoo !
"Ready ?"
Asked Armaan loudly enough for an entire procession behind him to hear. Giggling at his anticipation, the elders screamed together "Yes Captain! Lead the way." The champ held on to his Kayjo's hand, dressed in another cute little kurta pyjama, waving at everyone. As they began to move in slow steps from the house entrance towards the main stage, 'Ishq Waala Love' played its magic in the air. Sidharth and Alia walked hand in hand, grinning ear to ear, the guests rose to applaud the procession.
Loud cheers floated in the atmosphere as all eyes stood transfixed on the couple and their closed one's. If not for them, they wouldn't have walked the aisle this way. So under their compulsion, the gang along with both sets of parents and siblings, joined them in the couple march.
The parading crew settled in the first row beneath the stage as the lovebirds were made to sit in the middle.
"Sid ne liya "
"Sid ne liyaaa "
"Sid ne liyaaaaa !!! "
The chants rose higher in the air to the couple's surprise as their friends climbed on the stage and grabbed the microphones to cheer. Eight of them stood in the center, visibly gleaming, waving at the crowd beneath. Varun inched forward as the lights shone on him.
"Namaste bhaiyyon aur beheno"
"aur hamare chote nawaab Armaan" added Pari winking at the child.
"Bade hi khushi aur garv ke saath aaj hum sab yahan khade hain !" His eyes fell on the two halves that completed his soul.
"Mera bhai duniya mein eklauta hai aur meri behen heera hai! Kal hum in dono ko shaadi ke bandhan mein baandhne jaa rahe hain aur iss waqt mujhse zyaada khush aur koyi nahi hoga!"
Alia clasped Sidharth's hands as they lovingly gazed at their Varun. Her eyes already getting moist. "Tsk not now Aloo ! We'll give you ample of reasons to open your flood gate but shuruaat mein na rona shuru kar" warned Shraddha making the crowd chuckle.
"Aur bhai tu bhi zara control mein haan ?" Ranveer nudged Varun lightly.
"Our months of planning and dedication will finally be out for you all to see. Sid, Aloo, you both are family and we really hope that our efforts would make this night and it's memories, ever so precious forever !" smiled Ayaan. Claps rang across the lawn. Marking an onset to the madness.
"So without wasting time on faaltu bakwaas, let's bring on some dance" announced Adi.
"Says the one who can't" grinned Shraddha in a giddy tone making Adi wither away dramatically. "Oh pleaseeeee, we'll see who can and cannot dance" he replied. "Now since both of them are a part of us, we could not do a proper Sangeet war since both have same almost similar set of loved one's except close family members" explained Arjun as 'oh no's' buzzed around.
"Addu told me a week back on how hard it would be for him to take part from both his mom and dad's side. It would tire his teeny weeny soul ! After all he's just a little chocolate pudding" wheezed Rannu as the crowd roared loud.
"But do not worry, we've got this covered. Instead of a competition, we'll have some spectacular performances by their families, friends and a whole lot of fun. So shouldn't be begin ?" asked Ranbir and the audience agreed with a loud 'Yes.'
"Let's begin the partaaaaaayyyyyy" screamed Ranveer as the stage lit up with colours, ready to explode.
[Sid's POV]
I couldn't believe my luck.
Tried blinking countless time to make sure this was happening.
A forlorn dream locked away in some corner of my heart will finally bloom into the most exquisite reality of mine.
She was real.
And so was her hand tenderly locked in his.
Never knew that the one who took my breath away on the first day of shoot, would become my everything eleven years later. From the moment I laid my eyes on her, cliche or not, she became my dream. And tomorrow, we will solidify our union in front of the world. How fortunate are we!
My love sat next to me looking nothing less than a fairy come alive. She carried an unmistakable aura of elegance and beauty, pride of love shone in her eyes. With every ritual we completed, her beauty sparkled even more. My mind still cannot take in the absolute reality that this woman is mine to cherish, to hold and love, forever.
Our friends and families ran for the arrangements tirelessly since the past few months. They created a fantasy we could never imagine. Every corner of the lawn and its premise stood like a dew on a leaf. We were so proud of their efforts. And to our surprise, the turn out of guests were even bigger than we expected. It was all managed by our mum's and they smashed it.
"Gosh they are so cute" cooed Alia as her eyes flickered with yellow spotlight reflected from the stage. The first performance was from our grandparents who were doing a stunning job going by the whistles. They wore matching outfits and their moves could put a youngster to shame. We clapped and cheered for them as they ended theirs. "Mamma, can I sit here ?" whispered our baby as he eyed us warily. We shared an amusing look as he sounded a bit low.
"Come here my jaan, what happened haan ? Tell us" Alia made him sit between us and we held his hands. His big brown eyes shifted from me to her as he sighed, his tiny shoulders slumping. "I'm fine mamma but Nannu said we will sit together ... they don't love me" he made the most cutest sad face that I couldn't stop myself from picking him up into my lap. "Ohhh my love, your the most precious gift ever for us. How can someone not love you darling ? We all love you tooooo much!" I smiled as he kissed my cheeks.
"How dare he ignore my baby! Call that imbecile" ordered Alia mocking her anger, causing Addu to laugh. Soon an eccentric Ranveer ran from the stage towards us, kneeling on the grass.
"Hey champ whatya doin here ? Come join us."
"No!!" said Addu, turning his face opposite to him.
"Haww, kya ho gaya mere bacche ko ?" he asked looking perplexed and suddenly he eyed us almost accusingly "Kitni baar samjhay hai ki bacche ke saamne romance na chaalu karna par nahi! Meri kaun sunta hai! I have no ijjat ...."
"Hai meri koi aukkad ? Nahi aap batayein madam" drama king began his rant as he kept on annoying our senior citizens from family. Alia closed her eyes in disbelief. "My God, this nautanki! Even marriage couldn't change you haina !" Deepika excused herself from her company as she landed up to save us in time. "Ahem.. excuse me. I'll take this prop. Inconvenience is deeply regretted." And she dragged him with her leaving Armaan to giggle behind.
"You still wanna go with him addu ?" we asked.
He shook his head almost quickly "Nooo!"
Up next was a duet couple performance straight from our family. And we cheered for them loudly. Curtains rose to reveal both set of parents glowing like the moon right above us. They chose the song 'Maahi ve' and I began to recall a moment when I could remember any sign of my parents ever dancing ! They were new to this but were smooth in their moves. I could see my elder brother clapping for them with as much vigour. Meanwhile Alia had her mouth hung open.
"Mahesh Bhatt never dances ! I mean if someone had told me this five years back that my father would actually dance in front of an audience this huge, I would have hammered their head. Look at him ohmygoshhh! He's doing this for us!" her eyes started getting moist and I grinned at my father in law. They had put their soul into making us feel this blessed.
Chanda Meri Chanda Tujhe Kaise Mein Yeh Samjhaoon
Mujhe Lagti Hai Tu Kitni Pyaari Re
Khusiyan Jitni Hai Sab Dhoondh Ke Laoon
Teri Doli Ke Sang Kar Do Sari Re
Soni maa came down from the stage to cup her daughter's cheeks as they shared a heartwarming moment. Addu ran from my lap to join the ladies for a group hug, making everyone clap louder.
And in a flash my brother and his wife, Shaheen, Pooja and Rahul joined them on stage. The mood was getting better. And to think we've just begun. With the song coming to an end, the thumps had begun to take a toll on everyone.
Everybody Sing Soni Soni Aaja Mahi Ve
Jind Maahi Ve Soni Soni Aaja Mahi Ve
Everybody Sing Soni Soni Aaja Mahi Ve
Each time the word 'Soni' came, the whistles went across the roof since it was my mom in law's name! We chorused it together and suddenly it felt like we were in some desi concert. Curtains fell and our new hosts Varun and Karan took on their positions. "Never thought my movie song could have been performed by non - film stars with such energy. Must say I'm impressed by you Bhatt saheb. You nailed the show for me" smirked Karan as we cheered for dad.
"Guess who will take over the stage next ?" asked VD
"I don't know. Is it some other family member ?"
"Well close enough. These two are family for our Sidlia. Guess na yaar"
"Hmm ... lemme make this more dramatic and utter shitty for the rest of you" said Karan as he went around in circles, faking being in deep thought. "Ab zyada ho raha hai Sir" remarked VD. "Give some clues bacche "
"Two men - hot, dashing and talented"
"Oh then it must be me and bhai (srk) !" We laughed at this.
"bit monkey-ish in nature"
"oh then its Rannu and Fubu I swear" he rolled his eyes.
"Put your hands together for the one and only Baba's - Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor!"
Armaan stood up from his seat to clap for his favourite uncles. And so did all of us, madly waiting to see what they had in store. The men made a theatre-ish entry leaving all of us in awe. They danced to a medley mashup of popular massy songs including some of their renowned numbers like 'Tune Maari Entriyaan' , 'Isku Uski' and 'Tatad.' Shrieks went on fire as we applauded their brilliant choreography and co-ordination.
Theirs was a lengthy act and had equal moments of insanity and humour. Midway through the performance, VD, Adi and Bunny came up to sit with us and catch the dance from the front seat. "Eww whose sweating this hard ?" scrunched Alia as she glared at the boys. They laughed it off and turned her head towards the stage. "Fubu ko dekh, aadhi charbi (fat) utar gayi uski matak matak ke!" joked Bunny and we kinda agreed.
"Come on Rannu, kheechte reh! Abhi tak main superstars nahi aaye so draaaaag"
Our heads snapped at Adi who had a childish glint on his face as he said those words. "Uh what ? Everything's alright buddy ?" I asked smelling their fishy faces. "No we're cool. Just that we wanna wait till everyone on the guest list, even the late comers to be here to see the real deal" quoted VD. "But what's the real deal ?" asked Alia as she set Addu's hair.
"You'll see my love" answered Bunny dropping the matter. Nodding her head she slowly turned her head towards us only to be snapping them back at someone. Her eyes went wide with horror. Frowning at her reaction I looked at her direction to see someone I haven't seen in years and didn't wanted to as well.
Sooraj !
"Eh, what ?"
"Oh no"
"Seriously ?"
"Well come on!"
"Who invited him ?"
"Call Rannu !!!"
"Stop the freaking performance and summon the gang"
"Say what ?//" I whisper shrieked at how gibberish we all sounded. Not just me in fact half of our friends had spotted Mr Hero and were already glaring at Alia thinking it was her who had invited him like last time (some six years back ugh)! "Stop lookin at me like that. I haven't invited this protein shake. Must be mom. She's more merciful than me" she groaned making all of us facepalm.
Meanwhile Fubu and Rannu continued to twerk on the stage, completely clueless to what we just saw. Shredz and Pari went non traceable the moment our Sangeet began. Ayan had spotted this pleasant surprise and had quickly ran up to where we sat. "Woah what the hell is he doing here ?" whispered VD. I threw him a look that made him to shut up.
"Don't be so rude. Yeah he was a piece of brag when we first met him but hey, let's not judge our guest" exclaimed Alia to my reassurance. She was on my side at least.
"Tribal men can also work na? At your wedding we can all go jingalala ho ho!" smirked Bunny as Ayan's face paled. Years back at a restaurant, Sooraj had come almost uninvited into their private dining and at his constant intrusion into their discussion, Ayan had shut his buffalo mouth with this one liner ! "Toh yeh lo aa gaya, shaadi nayaab karne" laughed Adi as Addu looked at us as if we've gone mad, which we were no doubt.
We peered back to find him coming towards us, shining like some halo. God, I sure must have forgiven his ass but won't tolerate his trash talks, not when I'm having so much fun. As he reached near us, the spotlights fell on him all of a sudden making him stand stunned.
A moment of silence later our eyes went wide at both the baba's jumping down from the stage, now walking towards Sooraj like he's some prey. "Yeh toh gaya" ridiculed Bunny as we waited for whatever it was to come.
चुनरी चुनरी चुनरी चुनरी
Bam, they were on that song! Alia winked at me now that she figured what our friends would pull off.
Both the boys had a red dupatta hung on their neck and soon Rannu had his chunari snaked over Sooraj's neck while Fubu took a spot next to him in a very sexually compromising situation. Good lord, save him from this plight.
तेरी चुनरी लिपट लिपट के पागल मुझे बनाए
पहले से ही तड़प रहा था और मुझे तड़पाये
By now his face flushed so bad that we couldn't help but laugh at his situation. They were literally mock ragging him but the crowd sure loved this sudden gig going by the maddening response. As he tried to save himself, the rest of my boys stopped him as they joined in as well causing the hoots to travel across the entire city.
जाने तमन्ना कर न ऐसे सितम
कुछ ना मैं बोलू तुझे मेरी कसम
आई जवानी सर पे मेरे
तेरे पे क्या करू जवानी पे रहम
I clutched my stomach hard, laughing like a banshee at the wild moves they pulled circling an air drained Pancholi. Before I could react, Alia, Shraddha and Pari were also dragged by the boys to join in the fun as I held on to my son for dear life. "Dadda gooo" he forced me but I wouldn't bulge. I'd rather see them all relive their usual mad shit. "Next time" I promised my son as he turned back to see the crazy sight.
Now they all turned their attention from poor Sooraj to Rannu and Fubu, trying to deck their heads in red dupatta like some new bride. Boys howled at the sight while Addu and I laughed out loud. Now Sooraj found it amusing and he began dancing as well.
My crazy bride eyed me seductively as she took her steps towards me, frightening the living light put of me! Please no aloo! Kissing our son's head, with one pull, she made me stand on my feet, my face showing how freaked I was (even though I wanted to snicker loud).
She made me twirl like some little girl as she and the girls trapped me in the chunari! The boys found it hilarious as they looked on at us. Sooraj had the nerves to join their wolfing, urgh! I wasn't pissed but more or less playing it cool. Soon I broke into a chuckling mess as all our friends huddled in for a warm group hug. Our heart beats settled to sync in as one.
From the corner of my eyes, I saw a sea of celebrities, going green over our unmistakable friendship still strong after all these years! We were always the talk of town but in showbiz, more than the one's who admired us, we had folks who were stinky jealous of our relation.
But tonight, all that mattered were the one's in my arms. My family, my crew.
"Hey, where am I ?' cried a small voice we quickly recognized as our baby. We broke apart a little to see a pouting Addu being carried by an even more pouting Karan! "Aww gosh, call those two or else we won't be able to forgive our conscience" spoke Pari and we raised our arms to welcome them into our hug session. He broke into a grin and soon we all gathered again for a comfortable hug before making it louder for the back benchers
"1 2 3 4 who are we here for
5 6 7 8 who do we appreciate
SidVaLiaRanFubShrAdiPariAyuBunny !!!!"
The explosion of energies ready to pop out from our bodies suddenly fizzed like a soda bottle at what Fubu shrieked out before we could! What kind of name is that! We suddenly glared deep at him as he hid his face behind Bunny. Nevertheless everyone cheered for us as louder it can get. That made us smile and giggle inspite of how stupid we just made ourselves look like.
"Weren't we supposed to name ourselves the Terrific Ten ?" whispered Shraddha as she fake grinned for the guests. "Or the Golden Squad" added Pari as she mimicked the same. Ranveer dipped his head a bit and made us all crane towards him to listen "Who cares, they are buying just anything we say so Us - 1, The rest - 0 !" His hyena laugh made us all crack like bloody fireworks.
Partners of our friends made a beeline to click our exclusive pictures as we stood there basking in the love we got. Murmuring our silent sorry to Sooraj, we made back to our seat as the rest took their positions assigned. Shaheen got on stage as a temporary host this time. "So after all that friendship insane show off we all secretly love and are jealous about ..." that got her the response she wanted making her smirk. "here we come to an standstill as someone closer to my sister and future brother in law, comes to grace the stage next, more so to onslaught our vision!
He's everything you do not expect him to be. Yet he's the alpha and omega of Bollywood, the phone directory of the industry. The man without whom our parties won't be a superhit. Please welcome the guy who needs no introduction yet I'm forced to give one, the so called Dad of my sister, Father of Drama, Karan (aaaaaa - kkhh tune) Johar !!! " That was probably the bestest introductions I've heard in a while. Shaheen truly was a good orator.
[Alia's POV]
To have come all the way from our Student days to right now, at this moment of contentment, I could only be grateful to the universe for interweaving our paths together. Two individuals who had set off with completely opposite set of goals in life, were finally united as one. Tomorrow would be our wedding culmination.
A formality in front of the world for me to scream out my lungs that the man sitting next to me with our son in his lap is the world's best husband ever and has literally made me the happiest woman on planet !
As far as I could see, me and my love were surrounded by people who cherished and respected us for who we are. Most of our close relatives, cousins and friends had huddled next to us, some sitting with us and some standing with their phones ready to capture all the fun and emotional moments of our Sangeet. Up till now it feels like we've had a roller coaster of an event with equal intensity of laughter and teary eyed sessions. But we have just begun ....
As my sister welcomed Karan on stage, I stood up to clap for my dad. He really had dreamt of this night more than anybody else. To dance at his children's (me, Sid and Varun) Sangeet like no one's watching. We were curious to see the hidden dancer within him. Because he surely kept his dance germ dormant for most of his life. My heart leapt at the way he gazed at the audience beneath. This is it!
And heaven he did took away our breath !
For some odd reason he chose to shake a leg on 'Prem ratan dhan payo.' ! The way his hands moved in the air, graceful sway of his legs and to see something other than his usual smirk, we were in awe of this man. Of course the idea was to entertain us and who else better than him to make us laugh like we've never. Ranveer and Arjun's crazy act started to pale in front of this. "Hey he's too good at this. We should have co-ordinated with him" said a sulking Shraddha as she kept fangirling over his performance like the rest.
"Go daddy goooo" I screamed as we hooted for him. After all that winking, flashing weird forms of classical steps, Karan ended his performance with a floor kneeling namaste. He reminded me of a statue I once saw at Mehboob studios back in my childhood where Dad was directing a film. I kept that information to myself as we rushed in to hug him.
"You saw that Addu ? Wasn't he so cool ?" I asked my baby as he smiled into Karan's kiss attack.
"Yes mommy. He's funny" laughed Armaan as myself and Sidharth tried to hide ours.
"Karaaan, you were on fire my friend" giggled Kajol as she came in to greet. She was joined by Rani and Karishma. "Oh thank you my love, I just gave my whole to this one" he replied as Alia wiped his forehead with a tissue.
"I wish we gave our whole to ours like you did" commented Fubu quite sarcastically. Grimly smirking at him Karan replied "If mom was alive, you'd be six feet down my boy." She was his biggest fan, lol.
"Oh I miss her so much" I said as my eyes took in everyone who came to celebrate our love. Sensing my vulnerability, Karan came over to side hug me. "Hey she's right there. Smiling at you, cheering for all of us hmm ? She's probably tricking God to let him come down to attend your big day! I guess we're all seeing this day because of her prayers. If you cry she won't like it" he massaged my shoulders as I leaned my head on his chest.
I smiled through my tears, agreeing upon his words.
"And if she cries any moment, it's gonna rain so hold back your tears fellas" warned Ayan and we chuckled at his try.
"Everyone, back to your positions" said General Shahid as he ruffled Armaan's head, laughing at how crowded the front row got.
And soon we awaited for the next surprise.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NOTE : Goddamnit, look at us! Dancing at our babies Sangeet ... after all we went through (together), here we are ! Cheers to us, Sidlians (of this land) !!
This chapter and the last one are going to lengthy much so I've decided to half them up. Though I wanted to try doing a single chapter for Sangeet, I then realized it would look messy and crowded as we've still got a considerable amount of performances (in fact the main surprises) left to go !!
I was so nervous to type out dance segments as they aren't my thing. Its so hard to sync in lyrics and then explain what exactly happened in that duration. But I guess I gave my level best to explain things that I needed to and summarise the rest leaving it to your imagination.
While you read the cozy squad moments and especially when the second part drops in, make sure to hear the song I've put in the media. Its from the Indian dram Ishqbaaz and the fan made vm as well as the song itself would give you an idea of what I'm trying to narrate. 'Lafzon ka yeh rishta' truly symbolizes the spirit of friendship and love in my book and I feel you should definitely listen to it while reading this chapter as well as the next two! Also listen to the songs 'Maahi ve' and 'Chunari' while you read those portions, only then you'd feel the magic in it come alive.
The rest of the guests are in the same outfits that they wore on Sonam Kapoor's reception. I loved the classy touch to it *,* Also Kjo's dance is directly copied from his performance at her function. Would be stealing more of their celeb dance ideas so make sure you catch em all for reference.
Oh, and how was the wedding card y'all ? Big love to my friend Suchi xoxo! (Make sure to read the chapter before this) Its 5 years of DWB and I guess a perfect time for us to end~! When I began this book, I could barely write 200 words for each chapter and now look at me, my words are probably overflowing ! This book is a living testimony of my growth as an author and a human. I hope you recognize that as well. Also my bae Khushi has given such a premium look to my book with this smashing cover! Ilysm <3
This year isn't how we all thought it would be but think of it this way, we're all getting to learn and live our lives, better than we used to. Earth is healing, there's more family time, some of us are learning new hobbies, polishing our lost interests/talents, being minimalist, saving more, spending less and just waking up being extra grateful !
RIP to Irrfan Khan ! Just got to hear the sad news that he's no more. Was so sure he'd come back but he left for a peaceful place. Such a loss for Indian cinema! Wanted him to work with Alia for once but :(
To all those struggling with this crazy pandemic attack, my prayers are with you. One day at a time, we will get through this. Sending each one of you loads of virtual hug, love, prayers and healing! God bless our world. And may we appreciate our life even more.
Sadly my final college semester just got ruined thanks to COVID ! I don't think I'll get the one event I had been dreaming so badly about - my farewell! It hurts to think we all ended our college life of freaking three years on such an abrupt and hazy note! I don't even remember if I had properly hugged my best friend the last time we met! All of this sucks but deep down I'm glad I got to be alive and so are people near and dear to me.
Until next time,
Jemi :)
