Chapter 8
Life. Who said that life was pretty, yet who said it was ugly? Dreams used to haunt me everyday, every hour, every second. They used to plague my mind leaving no room for rational. It didn't help money was important and our precious money left our hands like sand. Life gave me a sanctuary called music which turned into something more. Yet life being so gracious, led me to love with Cupid's arrow straight to my heart. But life gives and takes, causing a fire to be so beautiful as love yet cause as much pain as a heartbreak. Quietly stealing away my family. It showed me that pretending was just a game and that though temporarily relieving, I couldn't survive on it forever. Life, the greatest teacher of all. I thank you, sincerely for the greatest gift of life. The ability to live. End.
My eyes cracked open to find myself in a hospital. The white walls overbearingly white. The smell overbearingly strong. The heart rate machine, whatever it is called, was beeping, proving that I was alive. Next to me, Xavier sat in an uncomfortable chair, humming under his breath. His hand sweatily gripping mine, squeezing it every few seconds. His eyes darted around the room. I squeezed his hand, my throat too dry to talk. His humming stopped. His eyes dropped to my hand then to my face. Up and down. Up and down. I cracked a smile.
Hi. That seem to bring him back to his senses. He scrambled to pass me a glass of water before pressing the nurse button frantically. His hair was messy as if he had run his hair through it many times now. Two nurses came filing in. They opened their mouth to speak but their jaws dropped when they saw me awake. The ran out of the door to grab who knows what. Was it that surprising that I am awake? I struggled to sit up. Xavier noticed and helped me up.
Then he pulled me into a tight hug. Can't breathe. He immediately pulled back. He started chattering away. Telling me that I had passed out the night of the fire. That my heartbeat had dropped very low. In fact, my heart had stopped completely and I had pretty much died. He rattled on, on how he was very worried that I would never wake up as I had been in a coma for about a month now.
A beautiful figure passed through my mind. Lucia Calleron. What about her? Her name passed as a whisper through my lips, stopping his babbling. He paused before informing me that he had long broken up with her. He revealed to me that he had broken up with her just before we started dating and that he had honestly first used me to get rid of the feelings. Over time he had fallen in love with me and finally, truly left Lucia behind. The fire, had jolted him, causing him to realize his true feelings and clean up his act.
With this confession, he got up. Then paused before dropping on one knee. Pulling out a velvet box to reveal a simple, delicate ring. Aisling. My name came out in a breath. He revealed that he wasn't proposing causing a breath of relief to escape me. It wasn't that I didn't want to marry him, it was just that it would have been too rushed and we were still young. We still had a lot to learn about one another. Will you be my girlfriend, for real this time? The question raced out of him. His nervousness was evident on his face. My heart thumping away in happiness. I paused, pretending to think, just to tease him, before nodding in agreement. His smile lit up the room as he pulled me into a hug. It will definitely take time to heal from the pain. However, life will go on. Life has plans, both ugly and beautiful, I just had to learn to accept both with open palms. I can do this, for I am not alone. A grin breaks out. I'm not done fighting yet, life. You haven't seen the last of me. This is just the beginning.
