Chapter 1

Dreams. Who said they were all pretty? Dreams haunt me everyday, every hour, every second. They plague my mind leaving no room for rational. It makes me unable to distinguish fiction from reality. It hurts. I can't see. A fog lies upon my view. A hazy smoke. An unclear path. Help.

When I was young I saw things that weren't there. People, animals, creatures, worlds. Maybe it was the heat. Maybe it was my overactive imagination. Maybe it was because I was always alone. Left in a darkness that only exists in my mind. But the darkness didn't bother me. I was lonely and without those that didn't exist, I would have been alone. They existed and called my name, pulling closer and closer to them. Aisling, Aisling, let us keep you company. Their company was always there and they helped me pretend. Pretend that in reality I wasn't alone, that I was surround by the warmth of friends and the fun of adventure.

My family was desperate to pull me out of this haze. They tried every possibility. They tried and tried. Psychiatrists, psychologists, support groups, one after another. Nothing helped. Nothing could pull me completely out of the darkness that covered my mind.

Until one day, we tried music. Music has always being around but we never realized its power. We never realized that since we were always surrounded by music, that music managed to always bring me back to reality. It brought a change to my family. They introduced me to the piano, the violin, the guitar and singing. I loved it. I loved music. I was always singing, I was always surrounded with music. My parents got me an Ipod filled with songs so that I would never sink back into the darkness. And it worked, the darkness stopped emerging except when the night dawned and the music had stopped.
