High School Reunion (Part 1)

Biting my lip softly, I lean against my car looking at my old high school. I never thought that I'd come here again.

In the morning, I got into my car with the full intention of going to work, only to find out that my hands on the steering wheel had a mind of their own. Hence, why I'm here. I must've told myself a hundred times that I wasn't going to turn up to the reunion. My fiancé, who came with me, probably knew I was going to drive here anyway, before I knew so myself.

But here I am.

It's been 10 years since I've seen them, and I'm not anymore enthusiastic about being here. I don't think I can face him again.

He was my high school crush. Caspian.

We had a complicated relationship. Officially, we weren't together. He had a girlfriend and I respected that (with a grudge - she was a complete bitch). But whenever he saw me with other guys, he got jealous, and he always tried to talk to me after lessons and invite me to parties, when he should've been inviting his girlfriend. We'd pass notes in class and he would always flirt with me. Everyone wanted us to be together. Heck, his girlfriend probably shipped us.

I remember him dumping his girlfriend before prom, and I thought maybe this is a sign that he likes me? We hung out more and more often and one day he nearly kissed me. I was so happy. But it doesn't matter, because I waited and waited but he didn't ask me out.

He never did. I ended up going to prom with my friends and watching them have the time of their lives.

I talked a bit to Adrian, one of my friends, who came alone. He made me laugh at least, even though he was always flirting with me.

I remember thinking that Caspian looked angry that I was talking to Adrian, and then wondering if someone spiked the punch. Why would he even care? I must've been seeing things.

My fiancé, Dante pulls me out of my thought spiral. "Hey babe, are you okay?" He asks me, his voice slightly husky with a hint of an Italian accent. I nod, looking over my shoulder so I can see him. He looks like a Greek God, with dark hair, sharp features and tanned skin (not to mention his body - the perfect balance of lean and muscular). In his cotton white button-down shirt with his sleeves rolled up, you can see his defined muscles and-

I think I'm drooling.

I don't know how I ever managed to find someone like him.

I remember that he asked me a question and try to tear my eyes off his body. What was it again?

"Oh, um, I'm fine. Thanks." I say awkwardly, my cheeks reddening. He caught me staring.

Smirking, he stares at me. Confidently, he walks over to me and leans against me slightly, one hand against the car. "Save the staring for after the reunion." He whispers into my ear, I feel shivers tingle down my spine. "I want to be able to control myself."

I bite my lip at the thought of what could happen if he lost control. Then, I try to clear my mind of the thoughts. Where's the holy water when you need it?

Dante steps back, smirking when he sees how he affected me. My knees are weak and I'm flustered with rosy cheeks.

"Let's go?" I offer, embarrassed. Dante nods, and we walk together hand in hand. At the reception we sign in, and I see a few familiar faces.

"ISABELLA!" I hear a high-pitched squeal and I turn at the sound of my name. One of my best friends, Faith, comes running up to me. We embrace in a long hug. "I haven't seen you in forever!" She says smiling, showing her perfect teeth. She's dressed in a simple yet classy, long, silk, baby blue dress with a long silver pendant and kitten heels.

"You mean since last week." I say, correcting her. But I can't help from smiling. Maybe it's the atmosphere.

"Yeah, but still." She says, rolling her eyes.

Suddenly, I feel Dante's arm wrap around my waist lightly. "You remember Dante, right?" I ask her, looking up to Dante and getting lost in his ocean blue-green eyes.

"How could I not? My own bestie's fiancé." She says smiling.

"Miss me?" I hear a voice behind me, and I turn around. It's Rain, my other best friend. She's dressed more casually, in a navy pleated jumper with a boat neck, and a black denim skirt with opaque tights. Her brunette hair messy, like always. Immediately, I run out of Dante's arms to hug her. Faith joins in the hug almost as quickly as I did. After several seconds, we step back and laugh. "Fashionably late, as always." Rain jokes.

God, I missed them. Even if it hasn't been a decade since we last saw each other.

"How was Bucharest?" I ask her.

"Oh, it was amazing! It's a shame that I only stayed three months." She says, sighing regrettably. "But I missed you guys too much to stay away for longer." Rain works as a vet, sometimes travelling to give lectures and writes a blog with a weekly posting schedule.

"Faith, your new recipe book has been a lifesaver. If it weren't for you, I would've probably been cooking microve macaroni and cheese every night." Rain says to Faith. Faith's an accomplished chef with several published cookbooks, a blog and vlog. But she works mainly as a paediatrician, with workable shifts and high pay.

"What was your favourite recipe?" Faith asks her.

"Definitely the brownie!" Rain says, smiling. Then, she turns to me. "You said you would call everyday!" She says accusingly, but with a joking undertone.

"I've been... Um, occupied." I say, trying not to look at Dante. Rain catches on almost immediately and looks Dante up and down ; she gives me a 'Does he have any hot, single friends?' kind of look.

"Ah. Well I would be occupied as well if I..." She says, grinning, and I pray that she doesn't continue her sentence. "No worries. Besides, I guess it's pretty stressful having your own pharmaceutical company, right?" She asks me.

"Yeah." I reply. Between the company and Dante, I don't get much time. But because I own it (the company, not Dante), I have more time than my employees. Still, I have involvement in the making and testing of our products. Before Dante, I practically slept in the office. "Can we stop for a minute to talk about your dress though?" Faith says, looking at me. "I swear I saw it in a designer catalogue."

"Is it too much?" I ask her, concerned.

"No." I hear Dante reply sternly, from behind me - Rain and Faith laugh.

"Listen to your fiancé, Isa." Rain says. "You look like a goddess goddamnit."

"You look like a freaking model. Except way more beautiful." Faith adds, smiling.

"Thanks guys." I say, with such a wide grin, I must look mad. A strand of my straight, raven dark hair falls in front of my face and Dante picks it up gently and puts it behind my ear. He uses the opportunity to whisper into my ear "Sei così bella, principessa." (You are so beautiful, princess.).

His lips graze my earlobe gently and I gulp. Looking at Faith and Rain, it looks like I'm not the only one who's flustered. Faith is grinning like a madman and Rain is staring, with raised eyebrows and a guilty expression. Rain was always really awkward around men. I wonder if she's got anyone new in her life.

Faith and Rain observe how close Dante and I are standing, and they decide to leave us so we can get some "alone time". Not that I'm complaining.

I can see Faith talking to some other people and Rain trying to subtly check out the men. Or so I thought. It turns out that she actually spied some blueberry muffins on a table and she shoves a few in her purse.

Dante has his arms wrapped around me protectively and I turn around to face him. "Are you okay?" I ask him, concerned.

"I don't like all these other men staring at you, Amore." He says truthfully, his eyes scanning the room. Gently, I look up to him and pull his chin lower down so he can look into my eyes. "You have nothing to worry about." I tell him, and his expression softens, as does my heart.

Suddenly, I see his expression harden again as I hear someone approach us. "Hello beautiful." I hear an all-too-familiar voice call out.

Please, not him.
