Trial 8: Run Before It's Too Late - Joe's POV
By some miracle, it looked like my strange powers had finally started to work. Where I got them from is still a mystery, but I don't have time to think right now. The captured girl had yanked her hand away from mine, with a look of shock painted on her face.
"Who–What are you? We were just in the underground facility, how the heck did we get all the way out here?" She stuttered in disbelief.
I didn't have an answer that would keep her from choking me silly, so I played with the helm of my jacket, glancing at the barbed-wire fence.
"I would love to sit and chat, but those guys hurt you right? Shouldn't we, I don't know, try and run away from them?" I advised the mysterious girl.
Her almond eyes slowly met mine with a focused stare. She seemed to be studying me, trying to figure me out. Her intense gaze made me nervous, but when she stopped out neverending staring contest, I could have sworn her eyes flashed with streaks of gold.
"I don't know who you are, but I can tell a runaway when I see one. There was talk of someone who got away from Base Camp, but—"
"Hey, you there! Get back here you filthy pest! Did that beat down not teach you anything? You better open that gate right now if you know what's good for you." Roared a burly guy that I recognized.
He was the one that dragged my new companion underground. Didn't she call him "Chief'' or something like that?
"Come on redhead, we got to go! He wasn't friendly then, and he won't be friendly now." The girl urged, while grabbing my hand to drag me on.
I looked back at the gate, trying to piece together what I had just done. Then washed all my flowing thoughts away, to focus on escaping the scene. I scanned the area for any other potential threats, but the coast was clear. We looked in at each other, staring back for confirmation to move. Once we established that trust, we bumped fists, nodded, then ran like never before.
"You were overpowered, and all you do is run away? Wow, aren't you pathetic. You can never escape the Shallows, they will haunt you forever! But don't worry, you'll be back someday, back to us all, I promise you that!" The Chief bellowed at us, as we ran further and further away.
I gave the base one last look, then glanced at my new comrade. I felt like I could trust this person somehow. Maybe she could be different from the base members, from people like Eddie. It was something I wondered, and truly wished to come true. My eyes shifted from her face to my hands, as I started to think,
"What am I capable of, and why?" I wondered as I ran alongside my comrade.
I picked up speed fast to get away, rushing into the woods. My legs were running, but my mind was too. Wondering what will happen, and where to go next. As I ran away from basecamp, I realized that I was running away from something else. I was running from myself, not knowing how to face my fears, letting the darkness arise.
