Mischief
My cousins and I were prancing through the halls. We've stolen our hotel neighbor's wig. My first cousin twirled the fuzzy black bird with her fingers.
"We've got him for sure! Let's go get his car!" My cousin bounced on a mattress and slammed through the hotel doors.
I ran for the stairs and slid down the railing. My other cousin and my sister were trailing behind.
"You dang kids! I'll get you!" An old man roared.
The man was short of my sister's reach. "Look out!" My cousin screamed. The man swung his arm at my cousin. She ducked, and screamed.
"Give me back my wig!" He roared. He pointed at my farthest cousin holding his wig. "Give it before my henches get into action!" He bellowed.
"Go ahead, we're not scared of your monkeys!" My cousin laughed.
"Very well, little sly girl. Have it your way. Grumbles! Pedro! Get the dang children and drag them to me! Make them crouch on their knees and beg for forgiveness!" He hollered.
"C'mon guys, run! Get into the car!" My cousin sprinted and nearly tore the doors open. "Somebody get the car keys!"
I ran towards the key holders and flicked a key with an orange tip and a baby blue octopus hanging off of it. I slammed the doors open and slid down the brick stairs. People were yelling and yelling as if it were some prison break. Boy, doesn't this hotel know by now this is what we do?
"I've got your back! I'll punch Grumbles if he touches you!" My second cousin wailed.
"Dang. Where is my sister?" I cried, as I tossed the car keys towards my cousin holding the man's wig.
"I saw her fall back. She's coming, don't worry."
My cousin shoved the keys into ignition. The engine roared to life. "Get in! Where's your sis?"
There was a feminine scream from inside the hotel. I forgot about the sting operation and ran back into the lobby. Everything was destroyed. The vase, cracked to pieces. The key holder, falling off its hinges. The bellhop...
"Get out!" My sister screamed. She was grabbing Pedro's arm and twisting it until he cried.
I ran over and kicked Pedro in the shin. He fell on his back on the vertical mattress. I grabbed my sister's hand and flew through the lobby. I felt the blanket of darkness cover me. My sister flapped my hand away and ran to the railings. She slid down the stone stairs and into the car. I followed her shortly.
"You rotten children!" It was Grumbles' voice. I jumped into the car.
"You get back here!" I looked out of the window. That wasn't Grumbles saying it. That was our parents.
"We've got caught," I muttered, disappointed.
"Looks like that man will get his wig back after all."
My aunt knocked on the car door as my sister let her in. "Get out now. Everyone except you and your sister."
My cousins jumped out of the car as my aunt fell into the driver's seat. "Now, I'm taking you home." She pressed on the gas pedal as the car whirred across the street. Silently, I looked out the window, and saw strange green clouds. Green streaks of light were painted across them. Auroras. I always dreamed of seeing one. My cousins and I were going to the big park and having a midnight picnic celebrating our heist. I closed my eyes and let the experience sink in.
When I opened my eyes, I was in front of a screen. A big one, like the size of an IMAX screen. In front of it were two brightly colored boxes. Inside one was a barren, cleaned out farmland. The other was all green, and in the middle of a forest. Above it was the question: Which would you pick?
I gently hovered my hand above the barren farmland. Without a doubt I would live there. The screen transitioned to a new screen, that read: BUT THERE WAS A DROUGHT. THE PLANTS ARE DEAD, AND SO ARE YOU.
And everything faded to black
