Into the Darkness
Eighth grade story I abandoned.
Prologue
A gray she-wolf, a blemished animal with blue eyes, shone in the moonlight and treaded onward signaling her tail.
"Great Alpha, holder of distant remembrances, please, I must speak to you immediately. A war is brewing, and the wolf clan is in danger," the she-wolf barked.
A robust purple wind came closer the second the wolf requested. "Ice," I know Hawk Clan. Most of them are domesticated wolves called wretched dogs. You must plot a downfall on those dogs and it won't be easy.
A Snow White Wolf smaller than the rest will find amity for them all," the Great Alpha muttered.
"Wait! I don't know what you mean!" Ice howled. She growled and bit her paw.
"Ahh, what happened?!" Ice roused up. Her paw was bleeding. She lapped up the blood and got up from her nest. The moon was still up, and she realized it was midnight. She recalled the Great Alpha's voice. "A Snow White Wolf reduced than the rest will find amity for them all," the voice hissed in her mind. A Snow white wolf, she thought. Pine Clan is in great danger without the help of the wolf. Unexpectedly, her ears perked up. A loud snarl sounded throughout the tranquil den. A howl sounded. A battle cry! The Deltas' den sprang to life with claws in full power.
"Ice, come on and help fight!" A familiar cry sounded. It was her friend Red. Ice lapped the remaining blood on her paw and started to run out of the den. She barked and raked a Doberman that was attacking Bird, one of the best Beta warriors. The large dog wailed and hit Ice hard. She felt a tang of gore and raised her paw to kill the Doberman. She raked her paw on the dog's stomach not enough to kill him but enough for him to run away. She never had the heart to slaughter some animal related to a wolf. She shot a look at Smoke the leader, who was pinned down by a Rottweiler. Smoke took a blow so hard the whine of the fierce dog silenced the battle.
"Kenny!" Growled a ferocious looking dog with a scar on his face, which Ice recognized was their pack leader. "Retreat Hawkclaws, Retreat!" He cried and the canines started to run into the heather. Ice inhaled heavily. She wondered why the dogs attacked at this time. Most of their warriors went to sleep in their houses.
"Ice, come here!" A saddened shout called. Ice rushed to the wolf that was calling her. It was Bird. Other wolves of her pack were crowded around something. Ice hurried to the scene and bent over. It was a body. It was a dog mother. She was a Gray long-furred dog unlike the others which were had dark, short fur. The mother was pregnant and sleeping slightly injured but holding up. Wind, a sentinel, who had an interest in medicine, bent over. He closed his eyes and Ice felt a chilly wind. It seemed to whisper in her ears.
Wind suddenly leaped to life like a rabbit. "It is an omen!" He shouted.
Everyone stared at him puzzled.
"What do you mean Wind?" Bird asked.
"I said it is an omen sent by the spirits! The pregnant dog mother represents something about to happen. Her pups are destined to be with us!" Wind exclaimed.
"No Wind, I already spoken to Smoke and he said we will escort the mother when she has her pups. We aren't taking any chances."
"You must listen to me! I talk to the spirits, not you!" Wind barked.
"No Wind. We can't keep a dog here. Don't worry, we won't kill her. Meeting dismissed! Duties will continue as usual tomorrow and Wind will treat your wounds in his den now."
Wind grumbled as he left the spot. He stared at Ice.
"Hey Ice, can you help me carry this dog to my den?" He asked.
Ice nodded as she bit the mother's scruff lightly and Wind got the legs.
"Ready?" Wind asked.
"Yeah!" Ice said.
The heavy weight of both the dog mother and the pup inside of her caused Ice to get weighed down a bit.
Ice set the mother on a soft wool nest in the sentinel den. The other wolves sleeping weren't having a fun time.
"That dog reeks of kibble!" One wolf said.
"She has groomed fur!" Another snapped.
"She has no fleas, ticks or yellow teeth like a real wild dog!" Another added.
"Listen," Wind growled. "You fools never understand. I got an omen that the dog mother's pups were destined to help us against these filthy Hawkclaws!"
Ice gulped. Should she tell Wind about her dream? About the Snow White Wolf, it's no way. If Ice told him, Wind would beg the leader for the dog mother to stay in camp.
Wind looked at Ice suspiciously. "Anything you would like to tell me?"
Ice looked at him with a blank stare. Now she had to tell him.
"A Snow White Wolf reduced than the rest will find amity for them all," she said to him, nervous.
Chapter one
Blizzard twisted and turned. He was being chased by a mountain lion in a journey. He fell over a rock and woke up whining.
"Blizzard, what happened?" Dandy, his sweet mother, asked.
"Bad dream," he replied.
"Ha! Blizzard is a puppy! Blizzard is a puppy!" A teasing voice bellowed.
Blizzard got up from his nest. "I am a puppy, Anthony," he grumbled.
A Hawkclaw entered the nursing den. Dandy nodded. "Meiko," Dandy barked quietly. "The second-in-command of the Hawk Clan," she whispered to Blizzard.
The Great Dane appeared to be superior to a wolf. He must fight like an actual wild dog. He was obscured with one snowy front paw.
"Greetings Dandy," the Great Dane greeted.
"Hello Meiko," Dandy replied, biting her lip with nervousness.
Why is mother apprehensive? Blizzard thought.
"You there, you look handsome with that white fur of yours," Meiko complimented. "You will make a fine warrior and kill all the pathetic wolves and their territory will be ours!" He said with an evil smile.
"Meiko, you're scaring him," Dandy prompted.
"Oh yes," Meiko alleged fast as he left the nursing den.
Dandy sighed. "Don't listen to him Blizzard. He is vicious and will kill you if you interfere in any of his rebel plans," she warned. "Never kill any of your own species. That is wicked."
Blizzard nodded. Why would he do any of that? That is stupid and skunk-brained.
"Ma, why is he mentioning wolves?" He asked with curiosity. "Not that I want to kill one. Are they killing us?"
"No Blizzard, this wasn't their fault. We started a dog and wolf war. They were there when we started the pack. My mother was in it. She-she supported the dogs. They hated the wolves and thought they were evil. We were the ones that started the war," Dandy explained.
Blizzard growled. "How could that stupid dog support killing our own ancestors?"
"Yes, please think that, but there is something else I need to tell you. You must promise to not tell anyone, even your friends."
"I promise. What is it?" Blizzard asked, ears perking up.
"You were born in Pine Clan."
Chapter two
What? I was born in a wolf pack? Why didn't mother ever tell me?
"I know Blizzard, I should have told you, but I couldn't let anyone else know. You were the only pup I gave birth to, and I don't want anyone to know that you were born in Pine Clan. They were nice ones, but the leader wouldn't trust me. He escorted me with the second-in-command to Hawk Clan along with you. Please promise not to tell anyone," Dandy whispered.
"I promise," Blizzard assured.
"Good, but beware, never take a side. You were born to stop the war," Dandy told him.
How can I do that? The leader is vicious and Meiko will kill me if I interfere with his plans. Blizzard just sighed and curled up into a ball in his nest. His eyes drooped and started to nap.
"Blizzard, come here!" A gloomy shout sounded. "Save us!" Blizzard ran to the shout and found a young wolf dying.
"I'll help you!" Blizzard cried. Blizzard used his teeth and helped the wolf up.
"Blizzard what are you doing?" A dog's voice screeched. It was Meiko. "You are on our side!"
"No Meiko, I take no side! I remain neutral!" Blizzard growled.
"Is that so?" The Great Dane smiled wickedly. "Prepare to die!" He roared.
"Blizzard, Blizzard!" A far away shout sounded. His dream drained.
"Blizzard, you were kicking hard," Dandy said. Blizzard was conscious now. What a weird dream!
"Honey, it's time for lunch, warm kibble!" she cheered.
Blizzard frowned. He hated the taste of kibble but he had to eat because of no choice. He had eaten killed mouse before, and it was delicious. He didn't know it was in the wolf pack.
"Come one Blitz!" A sweet dog voice called.
"Go on Blizzard, its Rose the Saint Bernard pup," Dandy said. "You can eat your ration of kibble with her."
Blizzard padded to Rose and saw a small can of Cesar wet dog food. He dug in the can. He was starving! Rose just gawked at him vacantly.
"Hey look at pig dog!" A teasing bark called him. It was Anthony and his troublesome friends. He was meant to be like that when he has Meiko blood inside of him.
"Anthony, I hate you coward!" Blizzard growled.
"What are you going to do about it pig dog?" Anthony smirked. "Rose! Come, how can you be with that dog?" Rose had no choice so she finished her kibble quietly and went with Anthony and his friends.
"Blizzard come right this instant! I cannot believe you!" A voice yelled. It was Dandy. He never heard her angry before. Blizzard scampered to the nursing den.
"Blizzard, how dare you call Anthony a coward?" Dandy ordered.
"I had to defend myself! I couldn't just sit there while he teased me!" Blizzard barked.
Dandy sighed and left the den to eat. Blizzard just stood there.
"Dogs come on! The camp is under attack!"
Chapter three
The camp is under attack?
Suddenly, a black-and-white creature appeared outside and a huge rock moved in. A blockage! He had to move the boulder and fight! He bumped his head on the rock and pushed it. Nothing happened.
He heard growls, barks, and the raking of claws. He had to get out and help his mother! He then saw a tiny crack large enough for him to fit through. He squeezed through and the barks rattled his ears. He smelled a lot of dog blood. The creatures seemed to bleed too. Meiko swiped his claws on the creature. Meiko hit it again and it fell to the ground dead. He is so vicious!
Suddenly something pinned Blizzard down. It was one of the creatures but smaller. Its large claws ripped through his skin and tore his fur apart. Blizzard growled and raked his claws hard on the animal. It screeched with pain and ran away. Blizzard licked the blood off his back right leg and tried to walk. He fell.
"Blizzard, what are you doing here?" The voice was getting fainter. "Blizzard, get up!"
But he already fell unconscious.
* * *
"Blizzard, it's time for supper."
Blizzard opened his eyes. He felt numb in his right back leg. He tried getting up but the pain jabbing his leg couldn't let him stand.
"Don't stand up!" A voice growled, vibrating through his ears like a lion. He plopped right in the nest. Meiko was standing there with his teeth bared.
"Meiko, err, dad, a thing bit me!" cried Blizzard hopelessly.
"You've had no idea what damage you have caused Blizzard! Meiko growled.
"What? I just got hurt!" Blizzard defended himself with pride.
"You fool! You made us stop fighting. You are the ultimate pest. Anthony is better than you!" Meiko spat.
Blizzard growled, and slashed the Doberman's muzzle. Blood spurted out as he yowled in pain.
"You heartless crow, I will kill you for hurting your own father!" Meiko growled slashing, and missing Blizzard.
Blizzard ran at full speed as he could to get out of the dog pack. His hurt leg hauled him, creating drag. The Doberman just stood there and watched Blizzard run and said nothing, but inside of him, there were thoughts of murder.
Blizzard inhaled and exhaled as slowly as he could. He ate only a bit of kibble, so he won't have enough energy. He stopped running on his three good paws and licked his pads. A thorn was driven into his right paw. He tugged at it just like he was instructed to do so by Dandy. He licked the blood coming out and
"Wind, come on!" A faint voice whimpered.
"No Ice, I must find the dog pack," another voice replied. "The dog is there, still a young pup. My senses are telling me he is in deep trouble."
"How do you know?" The she voice asked.
"The Great Spirits are telling me that this dog that saves us is in deep trouble and has been exiled."
Blizzard gasped. Were they talking about him? He was exiled- well sort of, but it still counts.
"Wind, I smell something dog!" The she reported.
Blizzard's eyes bulged and tried to run as fast as he could to the human houses to find a pet home. He needed to find one or else he will be in great trouble if he joins this other loner group.
Suddenly, when he was running, a canine stood up to him, blocking his path.
"Greetings, O White Wolf," a wolf barked with allegiance.
Chapter four
Blizzard stood up straight. "O great wolf, please don't kill me, I have already been injured, and I have gotten in many troubles with my pack."
The wolf raised an eyebrow. "Are you kidding? I am addressing you, O peaceful one," the wolf bowed. "My name is Wind, and I am the medicine wolf of my pack. I interpret signs from our ancestors and they told me that a dog was going to save us from the war."
"Wind, I set up your nest," An attractive gray wolf with icy blue eyes appeared.
"Thank you Ice," Wind responded.
"Who's this pup, Wind?" Ice asked.
"Oh this is-"
"My name is Blizzard, and I was exiled from my pack," Blizzard interrupted.
Ice looked at him blankly. "Was the prophecy true?" Ice asked, biting her furry lip.
"I don't know, but I could lead him to the cavern of the lost spirits," Wind said.
"That seems like a great idea," Ice said. "He could speak with the spirit pack."
Wind turned to him and had a serious expression on his snout. "Look dog, you were possessed of spirit powers to talk to the spirits when times have come in dreams. Only medicine wolves have that power, but in the prophecy, you were born with the power and become a med-alpha. The last one was a gray wolf that committed serious and horrifying murders. He used his power to take over and become a powerful dog."
Blizzard looked confused. "Who is this dog?" He asked with curiosity.
Wind looked blank and said nothing. A moment of silence filled it with nobody saying anything. "Anyway, let me take you to the cavern and see what happens."
* * *
Blizzard kept on walking even though his pads hurt so much. The medicine wolf pulled the thorn out, but noticed there was a start of infection. He put a bit of dock leaf paste on it and was instructed not to walk on the infected pad. Now he was limping. The sentinel kept watch over him, and Ice, the pretty wolf, held the other side. After all, he was still a pup. He wondered what was happening in camp right now, Meiko was probably telling the pack that the wolf pack took him, but oh no! Meiko might be planning for an attack! The dogs might refuse because of the badger attack probably destroyed them. He passed by trees, mountains, and a lake, which he might have learned how to fish after falling in a couple of times. Right now he smelled that the cavern was close. The walking was making his pads hurt so badly. He never had a good meal.
"We're here!" Wind cheered.
"Finally," Blizzard grumbled.
"Okay White one, go inside first," Wind whispered.
Blizzard gulped as thoughts ran through him, but then it was washed away by courage. He padded into the ancient cavern carefully and watched his step. He heard Wind coming through slowly. He stopped in his tracks and waited for the wolf. He listened to the paw steps and noticed they have stopped as well. Blizzard then realized he cannot be too dependent on a scrappy wolf. He inhaled the fresh cave air and took puppy steps. At last, at the ninth step, he saw a crystal cave and realized that was where he was supposed to go. He waited for the wolf to get directions on how to pass into the spirit world. He heard the steps getting closer and a new scent tickled his nose.
"Hi White Wolf, sorry I was so late," Wind apologized.
"I accept," Blizzard acknowledged.
"Are you ready to enter the spirit world?" Wind asked.
"Uh, I guess," Blizzard said awkwardly as his tone suddenly changed.
"Look, if you don't want to go, you can-"
"No, I want to go, I was the chosen one," Blizzard silently interrupted.
"Um, alright then, you have to touch one of the crystals with care," Wind instructed.
Blizzard obeyed the command and touched one of the crystals with his uninfected paw. A tingle of coldness ran through his furry body and fell asleep. He woke up with a jerk and comprehended he wasn't in the spirit cavern anymore.
"Wind, where are you?" Blizzard called, with the loudest voice he can possibly make.
"It's alright little one," a gentle wolf voice said behind him.
Blizzard turned and saw a wolf that was see through and was young and looked happy.
"I know you are scared, youngster, but we are in a great time of need. I will have to give you the test to figure out if you are the wolf qualified for this quest," she said.
"Uh, what type of test?" Blizzard asked nervously.
The wolf vanished without answering his question. Tree branches appeared before him and vines grew like a monkey's tail. The air grew humid and he panted so much. Suddenly, the forest stopped growing and the ground rumbled, and a growl blew through his ears, which sounded like a bear. Not any other average grizzly- but another type of bear. He crept closer to the sound forgetting the test that the wolf was going to give him. He crept closer and closer until the growls were close to crumbling the dry earth. Blizzard's blood pounded in his ears as the growls got louder. He then saw a sign but couldn't make out what it said. Suddenly a tree came crashing down and a human appeared, carrying tree wood. Blizzard felt a growl rumbling in his throat but controlled it when his consciousness told him that he would be killed. Abruptly, a yellow monster with an enormous mouth chomped on the tree.
Then, a white smoke appeared before his eyes and whispered in his ear, "Which one do you choose: attack or flee?" the voice asked.
"I choose nothing but to stay in this humble chasm!" Blizzard barked heroically.
"Very well young one," the voice said faintly then disappeared.
The tree eating monster then turned and turned towards the lush trees. It was coming towards him!
Chapter five
The tree monster sped closer toward him as Blizzard growled, narrowed his eyes, and leaped a great leap out of the dark hole. He landed on the tree eater monster and scratched on the eye area. Then he noticed something odd behind the eyes; a human was in it! The monster had eaten the human! Blizzard barked but the eyelids suddenly swished back and forth. He grabbed onto one of the eyelids and scratched it with all his might. The tree eating monster's eyelids suddenly stopped swishing and the eaten human stepped out of the monster. He waved a sharp short stick with a shiny end at him and went to chase him away. Suddenly, the humidity of the forest turned into a cold snowstorm, and snow crunched the land he walked on. He remained warm, but an upright was shivering in the cold snow.
"What do you choose, Help or not?" The wolf asked, not appearing once again.
"I choose where the wind takes me," Blizzard muttered. Why would he help a human?
