CHAPTER FOUR
“The rooms are upstairs, you will get to see them with time. I don’t have the strength to go up the stairs right now.” Mrs. Wright explained to Fiyi.
“No problem ma,” Fiyi said walking behind her, as she showed her around the house. It was spacious and for someone like her, she could stay in the house for months without stepping out.
“The kitchen is here, ” she opened the door to the massive room. Fiyi couldn’t help looking around.
There were two huge freezers, The dark, moody tile walls, sleek backsplash, and stainless steel appliances assert an undeniably glam aesthetic while the wood and brass tones ground the space and gave it that classic warmth.
“The house keeper's room is over there, ” she continued “and also the laundry room. if you have questions, feel free to ask me.
You have met my daughter, right?”
“Yes, ma.” The daughter that said she couldn’t take Fiyi around the house because she was attending to a visitor.
“And my son?
“Yes, ma.”
“Whenever you have things to do in school, and may not be able to come in just tell me. As I said, you don’t have to come in every day once you outline your duties, I am giving you free rein on that. I will give you job description and you will give me the days of the week that suits you.
The weekends are compulsory, so you can make it three days from Monday to friday and one day during the weekend.”
“Okay ma. Thank you for giving me this opportunity.”
“It’s okay. May has a lot of friends that come around from time to time, so you may have to pitch in the kitchen.”
“Okay ma.”
“I also have a vacant room if you decide to stay for the night.”
Fiyi nodded.
“Hi again,” a voice cuts into their conversation.
“Good afternoon sir.” Fiyi bent at the knees to greet.
“You don’t have to call me sir he responded. I am August. My parents have a thing for months,” he winced playfully .
“Get away young man.” His mother cautioned. I don’t want you anywhere near this girl.
“Mom! You are burning my cable already, just getting to know her.”
Fiyi looked at him but was not really impressed. She knew his type. He had taken his time to size her up when they were first introduced on his way out with his friend. Her plan was to come here, work and earn for the family and not get into any altercation with her boss' children
“Is Olumide gone?” His mother asked.
“Yes, he needs to attend to stuff.”
“May?”
“She went with him. She said she needed to get something.” August waved his hand.
“Okay then, that’s all Fiyi. You can resume next week.”
“What does Fiyi mean?” August turned to her
“It’s a shortened form of the full name Mofiyifoluwa, meaning I give this one to the Lord”
“Oh! That’s a huge one. Alright, hope to see you around.” He said patting her arm
Fiyi hoped not and nodded her head hurriedly as she moved towards the exit of their home.
She picked up her phone and dialed her friend.
“Hi girl, you said you were going to get back to me yesterday.”
“I am so sorry the voice from the other said. I have been busy.”
“How about what we discussed?”
“I explained to you, it’s easier to do the runs when we are in school. My parents are watching my every move.”
Fiyi couldn’t help smiling. This is someone that use to form miss independent in school.
“Well, what’s the deal now?” Fiyi pressed.
“I have talked to the girl that hooks us up and she is willing to take you on, but that will be when we resume.”
“No problem, thank you do much.”
“What changed your mind?”
“It’s a long story but thanks for giving me the opportunity.”
“Alright then, later.”
Fiyi walked hurriedly towards the bus stop, hoping that she'd be able to get a bus on time. Her mother had told her to get some vegetables and foodstuff for their dinner and she didn’t want to be late.
As she waited to cross to the other side of the road, a black sports car stopped in front of her. She waited for the car to move but the owner kept honking.
At first she was shocked because she did not know anyone in this area, then knowing someone with such a lovely car was far fetched unless the person mistook her for someone else.
The window of the passenger’s side rolled down and she could see May looking at her angrily.
“Good evening ma,” she said hurriedly.
May waved her off and she bent further to greet the driver.
Hi, my name is Olumide and I saw you at the Wright's house just now.
“Oh! Good evening sir,” Fiyi remembered he was the one August was seeing off when she arrived.
“Which way are you going?”
“I am going in the opposite direction,” Fiyi lied.
“Wait a bit here, let me drop May at home, then…”
“She is not going in your direction Olumide, remember you promised to help me work on my cover letter when I get back home.” May cut in. She was trying not to sound like a child.
“I told you, I'd draft something and send to you,” Olumide smiled. I already said goodbye to your mother, its not appropriate for me to invite myself in again.”
“You are not a visitor, she wouldn’t mind.”
“I do.”
“You don’t have to bother sir, I am in a hurry and I still have to make some stops before I go.”
“You see?” May replied
Fiyi said thank you and left hurriedly before he said something else.
She wondered what the deal was with May. She doesn’t seem to like her at all. Fiyi concluded within herself that the few months she wanted to spend in that household, she'd avoid May as much as possible, and even the brother who seemed to have roving eyes. Thankfully Mrs Wright said her husband travels a lot and is rarely at home.
