CHAPTER FIVE
Been a while.
Fiyi sat at the dining table in the Wright's house trying to finish up with a school assignment. She was no longer a stranger in the house, having worked there for about three months now and have learned to shuffle school work with her duties at their house.
She was already late and she knew she may not be able to finish up the assignment before the deadline tomorrow.
She finished her chores for the day but had to stay back because the cook had an emergency and needed her to stand in for him. She was rounding off her assignment when August came to the table to join her for his dinner.
She asked him about his day, then promptly dished his food.
August worked with an investment firm, rather than his father's company because according to him, he wanted to make something of himself rather than keep hiding under his father’s shadow.
From their discussions, she knew he could afford to live on his own, but had opted to stay back with his mother and sister at the family house because their father was rarely at home because of the nature of his job.
Just like her own brother, he was the man of the house.
August was the friendlier of the children. Their mother did not really have any issue with her as long as she executed her assigned duties.
May on the other hand, always found something to complain about especially when she had visitors. It was as if her mission was to make her life miserable.
May schooled in Canada, the same as her brother. She just finished her National Youth Service Corp and was trying to establish something for herself rather than a nine to five with an employer.
“Thank you, baby, ” August said when Fiyi placed his plate of food on the table and set out the cutleries.
“August, stop calling me that,” Fiyi complained for the umpteenth time. “your sister may not like it. “Remember the last time you called me that, even her friend was angry. I am always at the receiving end of their anger.”
“Isn’t it late already?” He checked his wristwatch. “Can’t you do that when you get back to the school?” He glanced at the books
“I'll be too tired.”
“I’ll get you a ride back to school when you are done.”
“No please, you do too much for me already.”
“Am I complaining?”
“I know, it’s just that I don’t want to be too…”
“Come off it, stop forming miss independence for me, I am offering it, you did not ask for it.”
Fiyi eyed him playfully and continued her assignment.
May walked to the dining, looking from one occupant to the other. She wondered why her brother was smiling at the maid. They were obviously having a conversation before she joined them. She always wondered what they had in common.
Boys will be boys, anything to get the cookie, even if the person offering the cookie was the lowest of the low. She eyed Fiyi disdainfully.
“Don’t you have a room where you can do your personal work, rather than sit here and make a fool of yourself?”
“May! What’s that for? She is just writing.”
“The table is for eating and not writing, moreover, we were gracious enough to give her a personal space for this.” She rolled her eyes gesturing at table books on the table.
“I am sorry ma,” Fiyi started putting the books together immediately. She was about to complete it and was waiting for August to finish his meal so that she could clean up.
August huffed and continued his dinner.
“Get me my dinner before you leave.”
“Yes ma,” she put her books down again and made her way to the Kitchen hurriedly.
“What is wrong with you?” August asked Immediately he heard the kitchen door close.
“What do you mean?”
“You were rude to her.”
“By putting her in her place?” she sneered “ Is she supposed to be sitting at the table with her boss?”
“Does it change anything? She is just a young girl trying to make ends meet.”
“Oh! I am sure she will accomplish that when you finally get into her pants.”
“Excuse me?”
“Never mind, ” she waved him off. “ I have said my own, she is a maid and should know her place. If you keep stooping to her level, she is going to drag you into the mud with her.”
“You amaze me sometimes, does relating to her change anything?”
“Yes, ”May replied with emphasis.
“There are better girls out there, I don’t know what you see in her.”
“I don’t know how that is your problem when you are ready, you will tell the world what is eating you up.”
“Nothing, I think you should be careful about the way you relate with her. You know the way these people are, you give them an inch, they ask for a yard. If you want to sow your oats you should go far.”
August dropped his cutleries and pushed back his chair in anger.
“I don’t understand all these parables, if you have something to say to me, say it with your chest.” He hissed and walked away.
Fiyi came back to the table with May's food on a nicely decorated tray. Fiyi was so particular about dishing her food because most times she dished her food, There was always something to complain about.
She carefully placed the food on the table and made to pack August's plate even though he seemed to have more food on the plate that what he must have consumed.
“Just pack your books and leave it’s already late,” August called from the living room.
“I can…”
“Just pack your stuff and come here, " He insisted.
“I need to wait for Miss May to finish.”
“She needs to leave May, it’s already late.”
"Whatever, " May said and continued with her meal.
"Thank you ma, goodnight," she said and picked up her books.
SEE YOU NEXT TIME.
