Chapter 4
Hello all! If you're still reading up to this point then be ready for some . . . Doom and Disaster.
I feel my way through the musty tunnel, my voice hoarse from screeching. I'd lost all hopes of a happy ending. I continuously prayed in my mind and try not to listen to my loud heartbeat, ready to give me away, a gun being pointed at it, a loud bang -
Astaghfirullah!
Grow up Sarah! I start to race through the tunnels blindly, feeling the coarse walls, grazing my hand as I sprinted ( more like tumbled. ) Yasmine . . . Yasmine! My sister, Auntie, Uncle, Yaccoub and Naffisa flashing away before my eyes . . .
My hand touches something soft, not dry like the underground or crumbly like dry earth but soft . . . like human flesh, a human palm -
I jumped backwards and stared at the person in front of me, I just now realise that there is a blindingly white torchlight that let's me see the intruders. There are definitely three, only three. I breathe a sigh of relief and wonder if I can hold them back long enough -
" That is? " Asked a tall disapproving man of 30 wearing black.
" One of the freakish things they call women! " Sneered a short one with coal black eyes that reminded me about death and how long I had before one of those long stick things ( rifles ) or the shorter and fatter ones ( guns ) in his belt, kill me.
A boiling rage began to posses me and I sneered at them angrily, there's no point in wasting time on idiots.
" It can stare, but can it talk? " A lady whispered cruelly from behind me. She was wearing pink showy clothes, astaghfirullah!
My insides rattled with fear, how, did she even get there?
I started saying Alhamdulilah, Subanallah, anything I could remember reciting things in my head.
" Well, if she can we could ask her to take us to her home, for an exchange, Cleo, Rick? " Cleo? As in Cleopatra? Don't be nuts she died hundreds of years ago! That can't be right! I'll stick with Black-man, Gun-guy and Lady-in-Pink -
" Don't be an stupid Harris, we'll call the others," breathed Lady-in-Pink," Oh that'd be marvellous, handing in a hundred little ninnies.
" But we may as well find out where it is now, " argued Black-man.
" Or, " whispered Gun-guy ," Leave behind a warning to all the freaks. Her dead body. "
" So they can get away? So the rest escape you madman! " Lady-in pink sighed cruelly," I always get paired with you duffers. "
The others fell silent, it's obvious who's in charge -
Quit dreaming, you're gonna die soon., I lecture myself, so grow up and scream to the others.
I open my mouth but I was soon muffled by some ripped off material of lady in pink's dress.
" Sweetheart, no one ever, ever wants to hear what people like you want to say! "
People like me, people like me! I'll show them PEOPLE LIKE ME! I seethed in silence, a torrent of emotions making their way inside me. Anger and hate for the people who were responsible for all these deaths, for the ones who joined these plotters, for the ones so stupid to be pushed around. Then I thought of the President sat on his throne with his happy fat family, wearing gold, silver and diamonds, eating to their hearts content and bossing around servants. Those monsters who turned my entire world upside down. And why? Because of our religion, because of our beliefs and because of their own greedy needs for power.
I thumped my anger but ended up feeding it more, the only reason I was had no family and was cooped up in this prison along with the rest of the prisoners caged in this hell was because of greedy, evil monsters.
But I couldn't crack, despite everything, I couldn't surrender to them
My shoulders slumped visibly and my eyes drooped. I tried clinging onto the last thread of hope, praying to for Yasmine and the rest to be safe.
" Now if you try anything, honey, we know where your parents are, " She said in a voice laced with honey but containing pure venom.
I placed a hand on my hip, trying to look braver than I actually was and opened my mouth but -
Out of nowhere, raced two figures, Karima and Basma. Since I could see them and Black-man, Gun-guy and Lady-in-pink were now standing opposite me, it meant that they couldn't see Karima or Basma. In normal circumstances I would be sure that Karima and Basma would be in serious danger but they had the element of surprise, and they're my only hope.
I never knew Basma could put up such a good fight. Basma pounced on Lady-in-pink and dug her long, brutal nails into her elbow. Lady-in-pink started to scream and as Black-man and Gun-guy twisted around to see what was going on, but too late . . . I laughed as Karima kicked Gun-guy's shin and knocked Black-man to the floor. My team.
" You think that's funny dweeeeahhh- " Screeched Lady-in-pink.
I pick myself up and pull of the muffler," You shouldn't've come! "
Nadia walked along casually as if this was the most normal thing in the world, Yasmine and Rahma behind her.
" And if we hadn't come, " Nadia reminded me grimly, " You'd be dead! Let's leave these two to it and get the others. We'll have to keep these two prisoners ! "
Black-man began to gasp," Too late, we've told the others to come here. They know where this is. "
Karima paused as she was about to stamp him on his chest.
He was obviously filled with a kind heart but lacked bravery. Even though I wanted to kick his guts to try and toughen him up, to get him to grow up, even though I'd just been bursting with anger at the stupid little idiots who followed the rulers it turned out there was more than it seemed.
Who knows how he'd been threatened? If he'd been given the choice to serve the Prime minister or be murdered for disloyalty, or if he'd been threatened with more than his own life, with something that mattered . . .
" Thank you, " I whispered as Rahma beckoned me towards her, Black-man gave me a grateful smile and Karima released her foot.
" I think we should tie up these baboons? " Suggested Yasmine.
" Basma? Karima? " They had now pinned Gun-guy and Lady-in-pink to the wall. Black-man made no move to go.
Rahma pulled an old scarf out of her sleeve and began ripping it up.
A frown descended on my face and slowly light dawned. Ropes -
" You guys go on ahead, " Basma gave me a tight smile, Gun-guy and Lady-in-ink continued to scream in anguish.
" Are you nuts? " I ask angrily, " You'll be the first to die . . . Astaghfirullah, sorry . . . "
Basma muttered," Don't shout opinions out loud, we don't need the youth fretting. "
By youths she mean Yasmine and Nadia
I watched Yasmine's anxious look. My glorious and wonderful cocky little sister.
If she dies a part of me dies. The way we always stuck together back when we were young and how we still did.
" Well, someone has to warn them or we'll all die! " Nadia looked at me," So? "
I take a deep breath and begin to take charge, " Nadi, take Yas and Rahma, tell the others we have to escape, or hide, or something! " My eyes are beginning to water from all the stress . . .
Nadia puts a hand on my back," Don't worry, I'll take care of them. "
" Oiii! " Yelled Gun-guy, " Lemme out! "
Lady-in-pink shook her head," Quiet down, you idiots. First you tell . . . "
She droned on and on, even forgetting she was close to death, nuts old woman.
" I've had enough you nicompoops! "
I ignore them and clutch Yasmine tightly. She's my responsibility, she's my friend, my best friend, my sister! My family!
Tears pour down my cheeks, like a rain cloud being emptied, only the more droplets that fell, the more heavy I felt.
Yasmine squeezed me, because I was the mum she didn't have after five. It was my fault with that too . . . I should've stopped Mum and Dad from leaving. I can't let Yasmine leave, but I can't let Yasmine die here, she doesn't stand much of a chance, I guess she does with Nadia . . . It's so hard letting go -
Nadia gave me a comforting glance," Sorry but we're gonna have to go now. "
" I love you, " I said in a barely audible voice.
She couldn't answer.
I tried ( and failed ) being braver.
I gently pulled away from her.
" I'll miss you Nadi, Rahma, " I cried to them. I wasn't lying but my heart was aching for Yas.
My mind droned out Basma and Karima's goodbyes. All I thought of was Yasmine. My sister.
It was heartbreaking when they left, I wasn't sure I'd ever see them again. I couldn't bear to watch them go. I shut my eyes tight. Millions of times I wished I'd watched them go, had another second with them . . .
But I only saw nothingness.
It could have been seconds or years, later Basma gave me a nudge, " Hear that? "
I heard Nadia, Rahma and Yasmine's yells," Get out, PLEASE! THERE ARE INTRUDERS! "
I heard the sound of feet nearby. My heart stopped. Then I saw Mr Hussain, staring in shock at the intruders and at Karima and Basma binding them to the walls.
" They're coming. " I whispered to him," Through the illusion. "
He looked horrified," But only I - "]
" They're coming. " I said coolly.
He snapped into action, grabbing the 'ropes' and tying up all the intruders quickly without a question.
I heard another pair of feet, more than just a pair. And the look on Mr Hussain's face told me it wasn't anyone friendly . . .
Not anyone friendly!?! So here comes the amazing Doom and Distaster.
What about Blackman! Is he a favourite! Is he just a cruel man trying to manipulate her, or is he a poor man forced into his job?
Thankyou if you are still reading over here.
