Chapter 1

Paisley

"Paisley, you're graduating next year and you haven't even thought about which law school you're going to. Deadlines are coming up, some of them have already happened, and you still have no idea where you want to go. You have to start choosing within the next week, or else it will be too late." My annoying, controlling father told me, over our dinner. The biggest problem with his whole idea of college is that I don't want to be a lawyer; I want to be a beautician. I've tried to tell him (numerous times) that I have no intentions of EVER becoming a lawyer, but he always replies with the same thing,

"Where will beauty take you? To a trailer park where you're living on minimum wage? If you're a lawyer, you can make more than you'd ever imagine. And, you don't want to let your dad down, do you?" Then he'd give those puppy dog eyes of his which, despite his huge figure and being naturally built, works very well. Then my response would always be,

"Right, sorry daddy. I'll look into it as soon as I can." But I never did. Once I was done eating, I went straight back into my room, locked my door, and watched Footloose, which I've seen probably 100 times. This is how my nights usually went, avoiding my dad as much as I could, and watching the same 3 movies over and over again. I tried to do some of my homework, but I couldn't focus and ended up falling asleep by 10.

"Paisley Matthews" My Calc teacher yells out, just like every other day.

"Here" I say, as monotone as you could get. I zoned out, again, as he continues to call out the rest of the people in my class. It was 8 in the morning; I was still half asleep, and not ready to participate in any kind of math class. I glanced around the class room and caught the football star, Luke Hemmings, staring at me. Every other girl was head over heels for him, whereas I couldn't care less for a pathetic jerk like him. He didn't look away from me when I looked at him, like a normal person would. Instead, he stared straight at me, not even blinking. I gave him the what the fuck are you looking at look. Only then did he turn away, whispering something over to his "best bud" Calum Hood. Probably shit about me, but who cares anyways. After another 50 minutes of boring calculus, the bell finally rang, allowing me to get out of class and have 5 minutes of freedom. Right when I'm about to turn the corner, I hear someone yelling my name. I turn around and see Luke chasing after me.

"What do you want?" I said, clearly annoyed.

"Wow! Someone's feisty." He said, laughing and looking back at Calum. I rolled my eyes and gave him the you are wasting my time, get along with it look. "There's a big party at my house tonight. Maybe you would like to come? It's gonna be pretty big, the football team just won our semi-finals game last night, so we're going to be celebrating big time. I hope you come along, it'll be nice to see you there," I rolled my eyes, completely annoyed with his offer.

"You've gone to school with me since year 5. The last time you said something to me was year 8 and NOW you're saying something to me? What have I done to deserve the honor?" I said, once again, VERY annoyed.

"Well you look very nice in that dress, maybe some other people would like to enjoy this view as well." At this point, I was about to slap him. Before I did anything, I walked over to my locker, hopefully being able to avoid him for another 10 years. There, already at my locker was my best friend, Jamie. I flashed her a small smile, and right away she knew I was pissed.

"What's wrong?" She said as soon as I get to my locker.

"Luke Hemmings decided to approach the shy girl in the corner for the first time in 10 years."

"Really?! What did he say?"

"He invited me to his party." I said, once again monotone.

"You have to go!!" She said, suddenly excited.

"I'd rather be on a deserted island with my father listening to him talk about law school for the rest of my life." I may have exaggerated a little bit.

"No! No! You are going. I will drag you out of your house. It's Friday; you are going to be watching one of your 3 movies and falling asleep at 9. You need to live."

"I'll think about it." I told her, just to please her. We then walked off to our next classes. Just a few hours later, it was lunch. I walk into the cafeteria, take my normal routine, sit in my normal seat, and eat lunch. Scarlette sits next to me after a few minutes, then her boyfriend Carson sat next to her, Grace sat across from me and the twins, Ellie and Eliza, on the opposite sides of her. I don't really talk to anyone besides Jamie, but it's nice to have other people here. I start having a conversation with Scarlette, but her boyfriend quickly distracts her, like usual, so I just start looking around. My eyes drift over to the jock table, and there I see Luke staring at me, again. I don't want the awkward eye contact, so I look at the other guys at his table. Calum is obviously sitting next to him, Michael Clifford, who didn't play football but was still great friends with everyone on the team, is on the other side of him. Then across from them I see Noah, James and Ethan, your stereotypical jocks. Right when I'm about to say something to Jamie, the lunch bell rings, forcing me to go back to a classroom and learn about stuff that I have no need for. The rest of the day goes by quickly, and soon, I'm home. It was 3:45, meaning I have roughly 4 hours before I decided if I was going or not. I grabbed something to eat and put in Bridesmaids. Once that's over, its 6:30 and I text Jamie.

should i go?

yes yes yes do it. tell me when you get there and how it is.

okay I guess ill go. but i don't want to. ill tell you if I have any problems

And just like that, my choice was made. I started getting ready. I took a shower, straightened my hair, put on my tightest pair of skinny jeans, a Guns N' Roses t-shirt, and my combat boots, and grabbed my wallet and phone and headed out the door. I headed straight for Luke's house and started the most unanticipated night of my life.
