Part 5: Exiled and Banished
Oh fuck.
Schlatt stood, and Wilbur backed away from the mic, gesturing towards Schlatt to take it. Tommy watched, holding his breath as he and Wilbur walked down to the crowd and took a seat.
"Ahem." Schlatt cleared his throat.
The crowd fell silent, watching apprehensively. Tommy felt a twisting sensation in his stomach, and he watched, waiting for something bad to happen.
"Wilbur, are you sure?" Tommy asked questioningly, turning his stare to Wilbur.
"Yes, come on, sit down. We're just citizens tonight." Wilbur patted the seat next to him, and Tommy sat down, not without sending a worried glance to Wilbur.
Schlatt tapped the mic. "Yesterday, I looked every citizen of L'Manberg in their eyes and I said, 'we're gonna make some change happen'. So let's do it."
Schlatt was clearly not drunk. Very clearly. His piercing, unsettling gaze swept the audience, settling on Tommy and Wilbur a little longer than necessary. Tommy shifted anxiously in his seat.
"My first decree as the president of L'Manberg, the emperor of this free country," Schlatt's voice was triumphant. People gasped at his bold proclamation, "is to REVOKE the citizenship of Wilbur Soot, and TommyInnit!"
Tommy stared, open mouthed. It felt like he'd gotten a shot to the heart, a blow to the stomach, all the breath gone from his body. And he simply stared up at Schlatt, no words escaping his lips. Everyone had turned around to stare openly at Wilbur and Tommy, and there was absolute silence in the crowd. George drew a bow and aimed it directly at Wilbur, and Punz took out a crossbow and began drawing it. Tommy stood, panicking.
"You're no longer welcome!" Schlatt screamed, an undertone of hysteria in his voice.
Wilbur stood as well, and the pair backed away slowly as half of the crowd drew weapons on them. Someone shot Wilbur, and Wilbur let out a shriek of pain, but not before screaming at Tommy to go. Tommy and Wilbur sprinted away from the flying arrows while Schlatt chuckled evilly in the background. Along the way, Tubbo snuck around next to Tommy and handed him an invisibility potion, drinking one himself.
"From now on, we have entered a new era of L'Manberg. We have moved past the darkest era of L'Manberg, and this starts with the banishment of these traitors, these tyrants! We're entering an era of peace, of unity, of prosperity!"
"Yes sir!" Quackity smiled smugly. "Yes sir!"
"Guys, guys." Schlatt held up a hand for silence. Tommy listened on, terrified and wide eyed, praying that the invisibility potion he'd just drunk would last for a while. Wilbur was nowhere to be seen. "Come up to the podium, Tubbo, come on."
"Me?" Tubbo asked, with surprise laced in his voice, with an undertone of fear.
"Yes, you. Who else? I mean, you're the secretary of state. What, am I gonna fire you?"
"Oh, of course. I- I'm coming."
When Tubbo didn't emerge from the crowd, Tommy listened as Schlatt's voice became stern and angry, as though he were barely keeping a monster in check, as though his hands could just slip... from the leash.
"Tubbo. Come up here, now. Do you want the job or not?"
Tommy could feel the wind brush past him, and he knew either Tubbo or Wilbur just ran past him. He heard the sounds of a milk bucket being consumed, and then Tubbo walked out from the hiding spot.
"Yes, I do want the job, I'm on my way." Tubbo's voice was laced with panic and Tommy watched, distraught, as his best friend walked away from him, towards the very tyrant that had just banished himself and Wilbur.
Tommy reached for Tubbo's arm and grabbed hold of it, stopping Tubbo just before he emerged from their hiding spot. "Tubbo." He whispered, voice hurt. "You... you want the job?"
Tubbo looked conflicted, and tried to meet Tommy's gaze, but obviously couldn't, since Tommy was completely invisible. Finally, after searching and failing to find words, Tubbo broke away from Tommy's grip and walked towards Schlatt.
Tommy stared, heartbroken.
First L'Manberg's banished me.
Now, even Tubbo's gone.
Schlatt let out another evil chuckle as he spotted Tubbo. "Come, come to the podium. Come, stand next to me."
Tommy watched from the shadows, watching as his best friend walked through the crowd, which parted automatically for him, and walked, all alone, to the podium and stood next to Schlatt.
"My right hand man." Schlatt spoke, gaze sweeping the crowd again. He patted Tubbo on the shoulder, and Tommy watched Tubbo recoil slightly, which oddly made Tommy feel a brief feeling of satisfaction that quickly evaporated.
Probably stinks of alcohol.
"As my secretary of state, I have a task for you, my first task for you, actually."
"O-okay?" Tubbo stammered, not willing to meet Schlatt's gaze.
"I want you to find Tommy, and show him the way out." Schlatt's tone was deadly, and Tommy could've sworn Schlatt's gaze landed on him for a moment. He frantically checked his reflection, but the invisibility potion was still on. What?
"Tubbo." Tommy began to plead. "Don't do this." He ran from his hiding spot as stealthily as he could.
"Rumor has it, he's somewhere around."
Tommy ran, and upon spotting a floating piece of bread, located Wilbur. He chased after Wilbur, climbing the tower after him.
"Perhaps," Schlatt let out another peal of manic laughter, "he's on top of some building."
Tommy felt ice run through his veins.
How does he know this?
Tommy ran up and tugged on Wilbur's arm, whispering, "we have to go," before pulling Wilbur back down the tower.
Tubbo had recovered from his shock. He was turning around, looking around, and took a deep breath. Tommy shook his head violently, covering his ears, not wanting to hear Tubbo say another word, but he heard the words nonetheless.
"Tommy." Tubbo spoke slowly, with an air of intention and purpose. "I'm going to need you to come with me."
Tommy shook his head, stunned and hurt. "No, no, Tubbo, no!" He snuck around the base of the tower. He could feel his invisibility start to run out. "Come on, Wilbur, let's go, let's hide."
Wilbur tugged Tommy away from where Tubbo was waiting, with an impassive, borderline bored look on his face.
"We'll hide, come on, I know where to go. I'll send you coordinates if you get lost."
And with that, Wilbur tore away. The only thing Tommy could do was follow, because he was banished, exiled, and torn away from the very place he called home, the place for which he'd given up everything, given up friendships, given up his discs. L'Manberg had been taken from him, and so had his very best friend. They had nothing. They had been reduced to nothing.
It was not looking too good.
