Six
Driston lead Adria to a small stables at the back of the ward. Horses nickered a greeting as the Adria and Driston entered the barn. The smell of fresh hey filled the small barn. Adria stopped at a stall with a tall black horse, scratching his forehead. Driston moved down to a stall at the far end of the barn and waited for Adria.
When Adria found her way down to the stall Driston was waiting at she couldn't help a the disappointment.
"Is that my horse?" She asked.
"Yes. His name is Remrock." Driston replied, scratching the pony's head. He shook his shaggy brown mane in appreciation.
The horse was small, a pony, it had a brown mane and it's coat was a light greyish brown. It's eyes were big and brown. Adria had expected it to be bigger.
"Where's the rest of it?" She asked hesitantly.
"He's a pony. Great for the mountains, and his thick coat will keep him warm." Driston explained.
"Oh," Adria said still disappointed.
"Would you like to take him for a ride?"
"Sure."
Driston disappeared for a little while then came back with a leather halter and saddle. He set the saddle next to the stall and opened the door. When the door was opened Driston waved Adria in.
"You'll need to know how to saddle and bridle your own horse." He said.
Driston showed Adria how to put the bridle on Remrock and to saddle him. When he was finished he lead the small horse out into the open and told Adria how to mount.
The rest of the day was spent with Adria learning to ride. In the evening Adria ate super with the other ward students. Then she was called to Fenyald's office.
"Adria, I hope you are ready to leave in the morning. I've asked some of the kitchen servants to pack your food." Fenyald said gesturing towards a chair on the other side of his desk. Adria sat and Fenyald continued, "I tink youll want to know your mission before we send you off on it."
"Yes, of course." Adria agreed.
"Good." Fenyald placed a folded slip of paper on the table in front of him and slid it towards Adria.
"But before you begin I have one question." Adria said.
"What is it?"
"Why doesn't your captain do anything?"
Fenyald seemed taken aback by the question for a moment then he brought himself together and answered, "he is a busy man. He has more important things to do."
Adria nodded as if she understood, but she didn't. Then she picked up the parchment in front of her and unfolded it. A roughly sketched man lay open, face up on the desk.
"Who is he?" Adria asked.
"The man you are searching for."
"Why do I need to find him?"
"He was accused of being crazy, they said he talked nonsense as if it were true. He said there was something in the Deltera's that has only been heard of in legend's, and should be kept in legend's. And the Deltera mountains were the last place he was seen."
"What legend's did he talk of?" Adria asked.
Fenyald hesitated. He wasn't sure if he should say more, but this girl needed to know everything about the runaway. So he told her, "giant flying birds, and he said dwarfs lived in the caves. His name is Kiran. He left about a year ago, when he was eighteen. He was seen about three months ago in the Deltera's."
