Chapter 9
Taylor's POV
This girl is not like any girl I've ever met, most would die to eat dinner in a fancy hotel restaurant, but not Meri. She was happy with chicken fingers and I love that she was honest with me. I probably could have taken her to one of the meals on wheels and she would have been just as happy. She seemed uncomfortable in the restaurant, but she's starting to open up now that we are here.
She doesn't seem to mind when I hold her hand or when I get close to her. She hasn't minded all day. I know she was a fan when she was younger, but I don't feel like that's why she's so friendly with me. I realize I want to get to know her more before the night is over, I just hope she wants to get to know the real Taylor.
"So you know all about my career, but what do you do for a living?" I ask her.
She finishes chewing her onion ring and swallows hard. Before she answers she takes a sip of cola and looks up at me.
"I am an ABA specialist," she says wiping at her face with a napkin.
She notices the confusion on my face, and smiles.
"I work with kids who have Autism. I mainly go to their homes, but I do see some kids in schools. It's a great job and gives me a bit of freedom schedule wise," she tells me.
"So you went to school for special education?" I ask.
"Yeah. My brother he has Autism. He's really high functioning and has his own place and an amazing job in IT. If you look at him you'd never know. He had a hard time growing up, didn't speak until he was almost eight," she tells me.
"Wow. That's amazing," I say blown away.
I know very little about it, but she makes me want to learn more.
"How long have you been a therapist for?" I ask her.
The waitress returns with our meal and she looks up to thank her. She keeps staring at me, but I am not interested. Looking at the girl in front of me is all I need. I look up briefly to thank her, but turn my attention right back to Meri.
I watch as she takes a bite of her chicken and closes her eyes. I don't mean to laugh, but when she moans over how good it is I can't help it. I find it cute.
"Sorry," she apologizes wiping at her face.
I laugh, "That good huh?" I ask her.
She nods and takes another bite, and I start to dig in as well. This is really good, I am thrilled she spoke up to come here.
"I am sorry I never answered your question. I went to school for Special Education and then got everything I needed to be a therapist. Best decision I made. I worked in the classroom as an assistant teacher, but I wasn't a fan of it. I wanted more of a one on one with the kids," she tells me.
I listen to her talk about some of her students, she's just as in love with her career as I am with mine. Music is my thing, and I am determined to make a comeback.
