"He's my cousin, Potter!"

"And he's my godson! Which means I have all legal rights to be his guardian! You didn't give a shit about him until a week ago!"

"I didn't know he existed until a week ago!"

The child peeked around the door, wide brown eyes filled with worry as the two continued to shout at each other.

"Harry?"

Harry immediately spun away from the tall blonde man and picked Teddy up. "Hey, Teddy. I thought you were sleeping?"

"You were loud." Teddy rubbed his small fists against his sleepy eyes. "Who's he?"

"I'm sorry we woke you up, Ted." Harry looked worried as he glanced over at the blonde man. "This is M-Draco."

"Your cousin," the blonde man added. Harry shot a glare at him.

"I don't have any cousins," Teddy responded quietly. "Mama and Papa are gone, Harry's my family."

Draco's eyes softened before he glared at Harry. "You didn't tell him about me?"

"I told him he had an aunt Narcissa, and an aunt Bella. He didn't need to know about you, because he'd just want to meet you, and I didn't want you anywhere near him." Harry's voice was cold.

"What about my father? You didn't tell him he has an uncle too?"

Harry had covered Teddy's ears the second the word 'father' had left Draco's lips. "That vile man is no family of Teddy's, and I won't let him anywhere near him. You're lucky I even let you talk to him, but if you let Lucius Malfoy anywhere near this house, I'll kill him and you."

He finally removed his hands from Teddy's ears, and the child stared at both of them with wide eyes.

Draco shifted on his feet. "I don't disagree, Potter. He's not... a good man. But it wouldn't hurt to tell Theodore he has family."

"It would hurt, because he'd want to meet you," Harry responded. "I didn't want him to, not at least until he was older and could handle dealing with such an insufferable prat."

Draco's eyes widened, and he glared at Harry. "I've changed since Hogwarts. Are you really so close-minded-"

"I'm sure you have," Harry responded coolly. "But I highly doubt you can change enough of yourself to convince me you should have guardianship of Teddy. I've taken care of him for five years. He's my godson and my responsibility."

"He's my blood family, Potter," Draco responded coldly. "I know you're not used to the concept of having a blood family, but-"

"And that, that right there, is why you don't get to be anywhere near him," Harry replied. "Because you're prejudiced and-" Harry covered Teddy's ears- "-an asshole, and you're not fit to be a father in any way."

Teddy batted Harry's hands away from his head, giggling. Harry broke away from his eye contact with Draco to smile down at the boy, poking his side and making him laugh and squirm away.

"C'mon, Teddy, let's get you to bed. I'll read you a story." Harry lightly tossed Teddy in the air and caught him, making the boy squeal with delight.

"What about your friend?" Teddy asked, waving at Draco. Draco bit his lip, seeming indecisive, and gave a little wave back.

"He's not my friend," Harry responded.

"Is he your boyfriend?"

Harry sputtered, letting Teddy down. "Run off to bed with you. I'll be there in a second."

Teddy giggled and darted away.

Draco sighed, leaning against the doorframe to the front door. "Potter, I want to see him. I didn't know I had any family outside of..." He swallowed, and scratched his left arm absentmindedly, "them, and when I found out I had a cousin..."

Harry shook his head. "Malfoy, Teddy is a good kid. I won't have your bitterness and-" Harry pointed at Draco's left arm. "-past influencing him."

Draco closed his eyes for a second, fingers tightening around his left sleeve. "Potter, my past is a mistake. Honestly, I regret it every day. I don't want that for Theodore, I wouldn't want it for anyone. Give me a chance to prove I can take care of Theodore. I don't want to take him from you, I just want to see him."

Harry laughed in disbelief. "Like, you want partial custody of him?"

Draco didn't look away from the floor, shrugging and nodding.

Harry just stared at him. Draco continued to shift around, dragging the tip of his right shoe along the pattern in Harry's welcome mat.

"Fine. You can come by tomorrow. We're going to the zoo. Don't ruin this, Malfoy."

Draco breathed out a sigh of relief, smiling brightly at him. "Thank you."

"Don't thank me. Not yet. This is a test run."

Draco swallowed, nodding. He didn't contain his smile very well.

***************

Harry was pissed that Teddy and Draco were getting along so well.

He had really been hoping the boy would hate Draco and he wouldn't ever have to deal with the blonde again, but seconds after Draco had mentioned that his favorite color was green, Teddy had turned his own hair green, and they were now enjoying their ice cream as Harry glumly stared at the street, letting his own ice cream drip onto the ground.

"You alright, Potter?" Draco asked far too kindly. Harry tried to keep a calm expression and not show how irritated he was. He must not have done a very good job, because Draco looked quite concerned.

"I'm fine," he muttered. "You almost done, Teddy?"

"No," Teddy giggled. "Harry, can we go to Draco's house when we're done?"

"No."

"Why not?" came the matching complaints from the pair. Harry shot a glare at Draco, and gave a sympathetic look to Teddy.

"Draco is gonna go home after this. He doesn't want any visitors."

Draco opened his mouth to protest against Harry's claim, but at Harry's immediate glare, he sighed and leaned back in his chair.

"Is that true?" Teddy asked accusingly, turning toward Draco.

Draco's grey eyes flickered up to meet Harry's, and he sighed. "Yeah, I'm tired. Maybe another day."

"Fine," Teddy grumbled. Harry was surprised Draco hadn't called him out on his lie. But when he glanced at Draco again, he almost jumped at the significant difference from the boy five minutes prior.

Draco wasn't smiling at Teddy anymore. He wasn't eating his ice cream or bouncing his leg like he was before. Instead, he was just staring blankly at the street, an expression of what looked a lot like hopelessness and giving up clouding his face.

Harry hadn't seen Draco look like that since the trial.

"It was nice seeing you, Theodore. Potter. I think I'm gonna head home," Draco said quietly. He stood, and started walking away.

"Malfoy, hold on!" Harry called. He leaned towards Teddy. "You wanna check out the flamingos? The adults need to talk for a moment."

Teddy frowned. "Don't be mean to him," he said firmly, holding up his pinky finger. Harry gave him a weak smile and hooked his own pinky with the green-haired boy's. Teddy darted off, and Harry jogged over to a confused and dejected-looking Draco.

"What changed just now?"

Draco frowned at him. "I'm afraid I don't know what you mean."

"You went from happy and playful to... well, sad in like five seconds. What happened?"

Draco sighed heavily, irritation clouding his face. He turned toward Harry, and only then did Harry see how truly upset Draco was.

"Theodore's the only real family I have left. Father's in prison, Bellatrix is dead, my mother isn't... exactly, in the right state of mind, Nymphadora is dead, Andromeda would never speak to me, but Theodore... he doesn't know what has happened. He doesn't know me. And I want him to, I want him to know the good side of me, the side that is willing to change, willing to take care of the last piece of my family I have left." He looked down at the ground, kicking the rocks halfheartedly. "But you've shown me I'll never have that chance. I'm not... I don't get to be a guardian. I don't get to have that."

Harry sighed heavily, running his fingers through his hair. "Malfoy, you could, but-"

Draco was shaking his head before he could even finish that sentence. "I could, Potter, but it wouldn't be real. It would be me visiting every once in a while, and you would be intently watching me the whole time to make sure I don't kill him or do something horrible or say something awful to him."

"Can you blame me?" Harry asked, irritated. "Malfoy, you were a Death Eater! You made some awful choices, and while I can believe that you regret them, I can't believe every part of you has changed. You've already shown that in your little actions, that some part of the old, cruel Malfoy is still there. I can't trust you, because you spent seven years of my life conditioning me to not trust you! There's only so much a person can change, and I don't believe you truly have."

Draco lowered his head. "I understand, Potter. I can see where you're coming from. I'm sorry about this. I shouldn't have come, I shouldn't have told Theodore that I'm his cousin."

Harry sighed, closing his eyes. "No, you shouldn't have. But you did, and now he knows, and I'm not a horrible enough person to Obliviate a child, nor do I hate you that much."

Draco paused, grey eyes flicking upward to meet Harry's. "Potter, what are you saying?"

"I'm saying... come stay at my house for a bit. Like a sort of vacation. It can't be doing you any good living in the Manor, and I'm not going to lie, I don't trust you 100% with Teddy. Having you close by, and still able to interact with him when you please, would be a good middle ground for the two of us, especially considering we aren't very good at negotiating middle grounds."

Draco snorted. "No, I suppose we're not. I understand your proposition, and I think it's a good idea. How long do you propose I stay, and when do you want me to bring my things?"

"I'll say a month, if that's acceptable for you, and I'll have a house elf help you bring things tomorrow. You may bring whatever you wish, and pick a room of your choosing. There are quite a few. "

Draco nodded, taking a deep breath before holding out a hand and smiling brightly, wiping away his hopeless look form earlier completely. "I agree."

"Don't mess this up, Malfoy. One fuck-up and you're out."

"Thank you, Potter. This is more than I could have ever expected from you."

Harry nodded, shaking his hand.

He wasn't entirely sure why he was smiling too.

*******************

Harry was pretty sure he was going to regret this choice.

Teddy was already over the fucking moon about Draco coming to stay, as if he was going to live there forever, and didn't seem to understand Harry when he explained that he wasn't.

To be fair, Draco seemed very happy too. He had taken the bedroom down the hall from Harry's, and immediately after getting his things put into the room, he came downstairs and said hi to Teddy. The two were now playing a game in the living room while Harry sat on the couch and watched.

"Ha!" Teddy sheered as the tower of wooden blocks tumbled before Draco's defeated eyes. "Never bump the table!"

"Jenga is stupid anyway," Draco mumbled, but smiled as Teddy danced around the living room in victory.

"Teddy," Harry singsonged in a warning voice. "What time is it?"

Teddy glanced at the digital clock to his right. "8:30."

"And what are you wearing?"

A pause. "Pants. And a shirt."

"What should you be wearing?"

"Pajamas..." Teddy was already starting to back away as Harry stood, wiggling his fingers and raising his eyebrows.

"Then you better put them on, before I tickle you!" he shouted, chasing after the giggling child until Teddy ran into his room. He was still grinning as he flopped ungracefully onto his couch.

"How on earth do you find the energy for this sort of thing?" Draco asked.

"Caffeine and going to the gym four times a week," Harry replied, his grin never fading. "Keeps me energized and fit for playing with a five-year-old maniac, hey Teddy!"

"Don't call me a maniac," Teddy pouted, but hopped onto Harry's lap. "Do I get a story?"

"Of course! Run to bed, I'll be right there."

Teddy rolled off of Harry's lap, laughing as he fell on the ground, and rushed off to his room.

Harry smiled, standing and following after Teddy.

Draco just sat in the living room.

**************

He felt like making pancakes today.

Harry sighed as he walked into his kitchen, starting his coffee pot and grabbing his ingredients. He charmed his radio to play softly, so as not to wake Teddy and Draco.

He grabbed his bowl and started mixing his ingredients, taking a brief break to turn on the stove and grease his pan before returning to his mix.

"What are you doing?" came a soft, tired voice from the entrance to the kitchen.

Harry turned around, a sarcastic good morning to you too, Malfoy on the tip of his tongue.

Instead, he froze.

Draco's socks didn't match. One was green, the other red, and Harry vigilantly focused on ignoring the irony in that. His stupid fucking pajama bottoms had stupid fucking snitches all over them, and his stupid fucking shirt had the same stupid fucking pattern, but the sleeves were just a little too long and bunched around Draco's hand as he yawned and rubbed one eye. His hair was messy and curly and soft, and his grey eyes ere staring at Harry in mild concern as Harry realized he had been staring at the other boy for far too long.

Draco Malfoy is not cute Draco Malfoy is not cute Draco Malfoy is not cute

"Um... I didn't know your hair is curly," Harry said stupidly. Draco Malfoy is not cute.

Draco self-consciously ran a hand through the loose blonde curls and blushed slightly. "I always put product in it. Looks fucking stupid."

Draco Malfoy is not cute Draco Malfoy is not cute Draco Malfoy is not cu-

"You didn't answer my question," Draco added quietly. "What are you doing?"

"Um." Harry almost knocked over his bowl with his elbow, but caught it at the last second. "Making pancakes. Would you like some?"

"Making pancakes," Draco repeated slowly.

"Um... yeah."

Draco stared at him. Harry shifted uncomfortably.

"You have a million house-elves," Draco finally said. "Why..." He closed his eyes for a second, taking a deep breath before opening them. "Why the hell are you cooking?"

"I like cooking."

Draco continued to stare at him. Harry tried to not look stupid. It probably didn't work.

"You... like cooking."

"Is today the day to just repeat everything I say?" Harry asked irritably. He had food to get back to before Teddy woke up and he had to go to work, and his conflicting thoughts about Draco were not helping. "Is there a point to this, or is it just to waste my time and yours?"

Draco's face immediately shifted into something Harry recognized far too well. He had seen this face a million times before at Hogwarts. It was the face Draco would make before they would fight.

"I just figured, given your history with your fucking relatives, you wouldn't fucking like cooking," Draco spat bitterly. "But fucking whatever, I don't care anymore. I'm going to work."

He spun around and stormed upstairs, presumably to get ready.

Harry sighed.

Draco Malfoy is not hot when he's angry.

He didn't feel like making pancakes anymore.

*******************

They didn't speak for another two days.

Mostly because Draco was still irritated that Harry had snapped at him for no reason, and Harry was still afraid to talk to him because for some fucking reason he thought he was attractive, which was fucking weird.

Unfortunately, when they finally did get around to talking, it didn't end well either.

"Fuck!" Draco shouted as he dropped his glass, the pieces shattering all over Harry's floor. His eyes immediately shot up, and he looked like he was going to say something to Harry.

Instead, Harry focused on Teddy. "Don't curse in front of him!"

"Shit, I'm sorry-fuck-shit-" Draco seemed to give up, and just shut his mouth. Harry just stared at him with wide eyes.

"What did I just say?"

"I didn't mean to, it just slipped out!" Draco yelled back.

"Teddy, will you let the grown-ups talk?" Harry said, immediately changing his voice to something much kinder as he looked at the little boy.

"Shit fuck shit!" Teddy cheered in response.

Harry froze, and his eyes slowly traveled from Teddy to Draco.

"Do you see what you've taught him? You've literally been here for five days, and you already have him cursing? And you said you wouldn't be a terrible influence!" Harry pulled the green-haired boy to his side and cast a silencing charm around him so he wouldn't hear the argument.

"Do you not understand what 'it just slipped out' means?" Draco retorted angrily.

"Do you not understand what 'one fuck up and you're out' means?"

"You cannot be fucking serious! I said fuck, like, twice! And you want to kick me out?"

"I gave you one rule, Malfoy, and it was to be a good role model. If you can't even follow that, how am I supposed to trust you around a child? I told you not to let Lucius Malfoy near this house, and now I think I'm realizing he's been here this whole time."

It happened so fast that if Harry had blinked, he would have missed it. One second, Draco was standing in the middle of shattered glass. The next, he was five steps forward, pointing his wand at Harry with fury in his eyes.

Instinctively, Harry pushed Teddy behind him, shielding him with his whole body and taking out his own wand.

Draco froze, his eyes going wide once he realized what he had done.

"I-"

"Get. Out." Harry didn't allow his own shock and hurt to come into the coldness of his voice. He had allowed Draco into his home, and the man had pointed a weapon near his child.

Draco's hands were shaking, and he closed his eyes and lowered his head. He spun on his heel and was gone.

Harry murmured for Teddy to go to his room for a while.

He stood in the middle of the room for a while before he finally moved, picking up pieces of glass with shaking hands.

"Fuck!" he hissed as warm red blood appeared along the new cut on his palm. He was too overwhelmed by all of this.

He ran his good hand through his hair roughly and just stared helplessly as drops of blood stained his carpet.

**********

A week.

A week had passed, and Harry could only stare.

"No."

A shoe that probably cost more than Harry's home stopped the door before it slammed shut.

"You will not shut a door on me again, Potter."

"I can and I will. You have no business being here, and I don't want you or your son, or, for that matter, your piece of shit husband anywhere near me."

Narcissa just raised one eyebrow. "Lucius and I are not wed anymore."

"Well, puppies and sunshine for you. Get out of my house."

"I'm not in your house, Mr. Potter, and I highly suggest you treat me with more respect. I am, as you know, the Queen. I can have you executed."

"Excuse me?" Harry asked, pausing in his attempt to slam the door again.

"That's more like it." Narcissa pushed open the door, eyes sweeping over his home with distaste. "You really should invest in better furniture. I know you have the money."

"My son likes the furniture, and quite frankly, I care more about his opinion than yours."

"My nephew is not your son, and my opinion should matter above all else. I'm royalty."

"You're batshit is what you are," Harry muttered. "What the bloody hell do you want?"

"I want you to allow my son to come back. I'm quite tired of him moping around my house."

Harry not-so-subtly guided her back out onto his porch. "No. He pointed his wand near my son."

"Not at your son."

"Close enough, and he was ready to attack me. I won't have that in my home."

"Potter, you will listen to me right now. I am roy-"

Harry shut the door.

*****************

Harry opened the door.

"Get fucked," he said immediately after recognizing his visitor, and slammed the door.

The knocking started again. Harry sighed angrily and threw the door back open.

"I said. Get. Fucked. Malfoy."

"I just want to talk-"

"You should have thought of that before you aimed a weapon towards me and Teddy."

"It was a force of habit with you, I'm so sorry-"

"You fucking should be sorry. I gave you one rule, and you fucking shattered it. And then you had the nerve, the fucking nerve, to send your mother over, batshit insane and switching between convincing me she was the Queen and convincing me to let you back."

"I didn't send her over. She just came."

Harry sighed heavily, tilting his head back and counting to three before looking a Malfoy again. "I want you gone, Malfoy. I don't know what you were planning to curse me with, but given the Crucio you tried to hit me with sixth year, I don't know what to expect."

"I would never try to hit you with that horrible curse again. Besides, if I fucking remember correctly, you were the only one who really inflicted damaged that night."

Harry raised his eyebrows. Even when being yelled at, Draco knew when to apologize and when to stand up for himself.

Then again, so did sociopaths.

"I'm giving you one chance to leave before you wish it was an Avada that you were aiming at me."

Draco took one step back, fear and pain in his eyes.

"Can I get my things?"

Harry gritted his teeth before stepping to the side and allowing Draco in.

"Five minutes."

Draco nodded, rushing up the stairs. Harry sighed and leaned against the wall. How had he let this happen? Two weeks ago he had happily been playing dolls with Teddy, and now he had kicked Draco Malfoy out for pointing a weapon at him.

"Harry? Why is Draco here?"

Harry plastered a smile on his face, turning to face Teddy. "He's getting his stuff."

"Can I help him?"

"No, Teddy. He's leaving, he's only here for a few minutes."

Teddy pouted. "Fine." He started shuffling through the books on the bookcase. Harry sat at his dining room table.

After a couple of minutes, Harry heard footsteps coming back down the stairs and relaxed. In a few minutes, Draco Malfoy would never have to cross his path or his mind ever again.

Draco paused at the bottom of the stairs. "I just want to say thank you for giving me this opportunity, and apologize again for what I did." He turns toward the door.

Harry caught Teddy's eye, and the boy closed his eyes, seeming to brace himself before he pulled as hard as he could on the bookshelf next to him.

"Teddy!" Harry shouted, jumping up from his seat at the dining room table as the bookshelf started to fall on the green-haired boy.

Draco turned at his cry and immediately dropped all of his things, grabbing Teddy and pulling him away just before the bookshelf crashed to the ground.

Harry took Teddy away from Draco, studying him. "Are you okay? Why did you do that?" There were no marks on him, but Harry continued to study him anyway.

Teddy only smiled widely. "Draco saved me."

Harry paused, wrapping his arms around Teddy as he studied a sheepish Draco.

"Yeah. He did."

"See? If he wanted to, he would have let it fall on me." Teddy's smile grew wider as he waited for Harry to figure it out.

"Teddy, you purposely dropped a bookshelf on yourself to prove that Draco isn't dangerous?" Harry asked, shocked.

Teddy continued to smile. "I don't want him to go."

Draco's eyes softened as they rest on the boy, and he blinked a few times before murmuring "It's time for me to go, Theodore. But thank you for trying."

"Wait." Harry set Teddy down. His head was still spinning from what just happened, and he would later blame his next action on that.

"Stay for dinner?"

Draco's eyes were wide, and he seemed stunned. A smile crossed his face.

"Yeah, I'd like that."

"Teddy, why don't you set the table?" Harry asked. Teddy ran off gleefully.

"What can I do to earn your trust back?" Draco's eyes were cautiously hopeful, and Harry felt reminiscent of when Draco had first asked him if he would let him move in.

Harry grinned at him.

"You can start by calling Teddy by his nickname instead of Theodore. He hates Theodore."

Draco nodded, unable to contain his smile. "Does that mean I'll be talking to him more often?"

Harry tried to hide his own smile. "It means stay for dinner, and we'll see."
