Remembrance Ball
listening to the above song motivated this whole story and is a really nice background to it, so I suggest you listen while you read! :)
Harry watches the crowd in front of him as he sits on the benches, alone.
The ball is held in remembrance of all those who were lost in the Battle of Hogwarts, and is named as such.
The Remembrance Ball. Harry remembers McGonagall telling them about it as they started their eighth year. Now it was here.
He had meant to get a date, but had lost track of time and now he is here by himself.
He watches the dancing couples in front of him.
Hermione and Ron dance together. Harry knows they broke up, but they're both all smiles with each other, despite being uninterested in each other.
Pansy dances with Blaise. Harry knows they're just friends, they're both gay, but with how close they are as they dance, you'd think they had been dating for years.
Neville dances with Parvati, but he's watching Blaise's every movement, and the darker boy's eyes fall on him every couple of seconds. Harry grins.
Seamus and Cho dance together. Neither one really seems interested in the other, they're both stealing glances at other people.
Ginny dances with a random cute Ravenclaw boy. She doesn't look very interested either.
Dean dances with Luna, who, although she has bright smiles, obviously isn't interested in him that way.
Harry raises an eyebrow. Very few people seem brave enough to ask the person they really want out.
Harry included, but that's beside the point.
Besides, everything could be gayer, including this dance.
Harry slips in between Ron and Hermione with an "excuse me" and begins to dance with Hermione.
Hermione raises an eyebrow. "Harry, you know I'm into girls."
Harry winks. "Which is precisely why I'm doing this."
Before Hermione can say anything, Harry fluidly dances in between Pansy and Blaise, handing Hermione off to Pansy and taking Blaise's hand, dancing with him.
Blaise grins. "Smooth, Potter."
"Don't think you're not on my target list." Harry notices Ron has swept up Parvati and Neville is walking toward the food.
"Oh, I'm too tired to dance," Harry says, just loudly enough for Neville to hear. "Neville, take this boy off my hands."
As Neville turns around, Harry twirls Blaise away from him, sending him into Neville's arms. Neville blinks, but blushes and smiles as they begin to dance gracefully.
Harry walks across the dance floor until he finds his next target.
He sweeps Cho away from Seamus, murmuring for the Irish boy to stay where he is, he'll be back.
He dances Cho towards Ginny and her partner.
"Harry, what on earth?" Cho is smiling, and allows herself to be gracefully handed to the boy Ginny was dancing with, and Harry and Ginny begin to dance away.
"I've seen what you're doing, Harry," she says with a grin. "Who's my new partner?"
"Luna." Harry says it with a wicked grin, and Ginny's cheeks turn pink.
He twirls her, and when she finishes twirling she's in Luna's arms and Harry is dancing with Dean and smiling wickedly at her.
Luna seems pleased with her change of partners.
Harry dances with Dean towards where he left Seamus.
"Harry what are you doing? You've switched up everyone's partner," Dean laughs.
"You better realize your feelings for each other real fast, or this will have been pointless," Harry murmurs.
"What does that mean?"
Harry ignores his question in favor of dancing toward Seamus.
"Here is your reward for waiting so patiently." Harry hands off Dean and goes back to his spot.
"Clever boy."
The voice is behind him, but Harry immediately knows who it belongs to. He's been dealing with that slow, sexy drawl for eight years.
"Setting up all your friends, but oh no, poor Harry's all alone," Draco whispers.
"Maybe that's because I couldn't find the boy I wanted to dance with." Harry's response is shaky at best, and he wills himself to pull it together.
"Oh yes?" Draco's voice has a hint of jealousy. "Why don't you go find him?"
"Because I know where he is now."
"And where might that be?"
"He's sitting behind me whispering in my ear instead of asking me to dance."
There's a brief, shocked silence before Draco speaks again. "Maybe he was waiting for you to ask him."
"Very well." Harry stands, and turns to face Draco.
For a second, his breath catches in his throat. Instead of dress robes, Draco has dressed similar to Harry in a Muggle tuxedo. His hair is soft and curly, but not gelled. His eyes have a glint of hope.
Harry is breathless. Draco looks... stunning.
He extends his hand slowly. "May I have this dance, Draco?"
A soft, pale hand takes his. "You may."
Harry pulls Draco up, and instantly the two are practically floating on air.
Harry and Draco are perfect dancers together, knowing exactly how the other will move and accommodating to that flawlessly.
The music is simply in the background now, and Harry can only focus on the feeling of Draco's hands on his waist and in his own, Draco's eyes sparkling, his soft hair, his small smile.
"You're staring, Harry." Draco's voice is gentle, almost hesitant.
"Well, I might never get to have this experience again, I want to savor it."
Draco frowns. "There will be other balls to attend."
"I mean this." Harry's heart is fluttering. "Dancing with you."'
"Oh." Draco clears his throat nervously. "Maybe... maybe we could, you know, dance again?"
Harry smiles at that, and Draco relaxes. They finish their dance without another word, and the pair go back to where they were sitting.
Draco is sitting next to him, and he looks nervous. His leg is bouncing, and he's staring at the floor, biting his lip in concentration.
"Hey." Harry, in a brief moment of weakness and lack of judgement, reaches out and takes Draco's hand in his own. "What's wrong?"
Draco's head shoots up at Harry's touch, and his face colors.
"I..." He attempts to say something, but then hangs his head, embarrassed. "Never mind, it's stupid. You'll hate me."
"I can't hate you," Harry responds truthfully. "Not anymore. Tell me, I won't mind."
"I... like you." Draco immediately blushes and hangs his head.
Harry smiles, surprised. "Do you really?"
Draco seems shocked at Harry's light, happy tone. He lifts his head. "Yeah. I do."
"Good. I like you too."
Draco blinks. "Really? Wow."
Harry smiles, and tightens his grip on Draco's hands. "May I have this dance, darling?"
Draco grins. "Of course."
Harry twirls him lightly, and the two dance more.
"I see it ended well for you, then!" Pansy says as her and Hermione end up next to them.
"It did," Harry replies lightly as Draco blushes. "And you two?"
Pansy lightly kisses Hermione. "Wonderful."
Harry smiles. "I'm glad."
"Are you two dating now?" Hermione asks.
Harry shrugs. "I'm not really sure." He turns to Draco. "Hey Draco, will you be my boyfriend?"
Draco's smile could power the sun. "Yes!"
Harry turns back to Hermione and Pansy, grinning. "Does that answer your question?"
"Yes." Hermione and Pansy bid their farewells and dance away.
Harry and Draco are incredibly close now. Draco's arms are around Harry's neck, and Harry's hands are placed on Draco's hips.
"Harry, may I kiss you?" Draco asks, his voice shaky and nervous.
Harry smiles. "You may, my love."
Draco pulls Harry forward and kisses him as their song reaches an end.
