Hanahaki

Prompt by Im_Dam_Crazy

Hanahaki disease is a fictional disease in which the victim coughs up flower petals when they suffer from one-sided love. It ends when the beloved returns their feelings (romantic love only; strong friendship is not enough), or when the victim dies. Flowers grow in the respiratory system, and after a while, the victim will die if their love remains unrequited.

"Malfoy looks strange," Hermione commented as they walked down the hall.

Harry glanced away from Ginny so see the pale blonde boy standing with Pansy and Blaise, who were both glaring at them. Malfoy looked ill.

"Suppose so," he muttered.

"This is my class," Ginny said sweetly, turning to face Harry.

Harry smiled, leaning down to kiss his girlfriend gently.

As she walked into the classroom, Harry looked up, startled, as Malfoy started coughing and covered his mouth quickly before running off. Blaise and Pansy quickly followed.

Hermione stepped forward, pointing at something on the ground. "Merlin."

Harry frowned. "A flower petal?"

"I think Malfoy has Hanahaki," Hermione whispered. Her eyes widened. "He coughed when you kissed Ginny. I think Malfoy had Hanahaki for Ginny!"

"No way!" Harry protested. "She's mine! Malfoy can't have her, no matter what stupid disease he has!"

Ron nodded. "If anything, you should kiss Ginny more, if it makes Malfoy suffer. Serves him right."

"Ron!" Hermione said, horrified. "Hanahaki is fatal!"

Ron's smirk dropped. "It is?"

Harry stared. "Malfoy's gonna die if Ginny doesn't fall in love with him?"

Hermione shrugged desperately.

Harry turned around. "I'm gonna talk to him."

"Be careful," Hermione murmured. "C'mon, Ron."

Harry darted off in the direction he had seen Malfoy go. He continued until he came up to the lake, where he saw the trio sitting.

"Malfoy?" he said. "Mind if I talk to you?"

Malfoy just shrugged, not moving his hand away from his mouth. Pansy and Blaise stood, giving him suspicious looks before walking away.

Harry sat down. "I know you have Hanahaki."

Malfoy sighed, moving his hand away from his mouth. Blood rested in his palm. A small pile of flower petals laid in front of him.

"And?" he whispered miserably.

"And I want you to know if it will save your life, I'll break up with Ginny and do whatever I can to get you two together."

Malfoy stared at him. "What?"

"Well, don't you have Hanahaki for Ginny?"

Malfoy burst out into laughter, which quickly turned into coughing. Flower petals spilled from his lips, along with some blood. Malfoy stared at it miserably.

"What's so funny?" Harry asked.

"I'm not in love with the Weaslette, Potter."

"You're not? But when I kissed her, you covered your mouth with your hand and ran off."

Malfoy seemed to debate something in his head before sighing.

"I don't like girls, Potter."

Harry's eyes widened drastically. "What?"

Malfoy rolled his eyes. "Let me know when you figure it out. It's not like it matters either way."

He stood and walked away, leaving Harry alone by the lake.

************************

When Harry recounted this story to Hermione, she gasped so loudly Madam Pince glared at her.

"Harry, do you realize what this means?" she hissed.

"Malfoy's gay?" Harry guessed. Based on Hermione's expression, he had guessed wrong.

"Harry, do you really not realize?" she whispered.

Harry sighed. "Please just tell me what's going on."

"Harry, Malfoy's gay. When he saw you kiss Ginny, he coughed up flower petals. Connect the dots."

Harry frowned. "Ron?"

Hermione slammed her head down on the table. Madam Pince glared at her again.

"Harry, Malfoy's in love with you."

Harry stared. "Me?"

Hermione nodded her confirmation.

"Malfoy hates me!" Harry protested.

"Apparently not."

"This is..."

"Insane? Beautiful? Sad? The answer is yes."

"But-"

"No buts. I swear, he is."

Harry blinked. Malfoy, the boy who had tormented him for years, was in love with him. Him.

"Holy shit," he whispered. "I have to find him."

Hermione frowned. "Is this something you should break up with Ginny before doing?"

Harry turned red. "No! Nothing like that! Just talking."

Hermione raised an eyebrow. "In the future, could it become something that you would break up with Ginny over?"

Harry paused. "Maybe."

Then he darted off to the Slytherin dorms, leaving Hermione with a soft smile on her face.

He found he didn't know the Slytherin password, and instead took to asking the snake on the door, who was so pleased by his ability that it let him inside.

His nervous smile dropped.

Malfoy was on the ground, coughing and gasping. Dozens of bloody flower petals laid on the ground. Blaise and Pansy were desperately trying to get him to drink water, to sit up, to do anything.

Harry dropped to his knees beside Malfoy, horrified. "Draco, I'm so sorry."

"You- figured- it- out," Draco said between coughs.

"Sit up," Harry urged, but doing so did not stop Draco from coughing.

"He's dying," Pansy said breathlessly.

"No, he's not," Harry replied desperately.

But Draco was. He was coughing harder and harder, and it was more blood than flowers now. It sounded scratchy and hoarse, and Harry remembered that flowers were growing in his lungs and his throat.

"Deep breaths," he murmured, but Draco just gasped for air. "You're okay, you're okay, you're okay."

Draco smiled weakly, and coughed again. The amount of flower petals that came out could have made a whole flower.

"Please be okay," Harry whispered. "I could love you. If you don't die now, I could love you."

Draco's eyes were wide and full of tears.

"Could love isn't good enough, Potter," Pansy spat.

Harry ignored her. "Please be okay," he begged Draco. "Please stop coughing, and I'll kiss you a thousand times and then a thousand times more and I'll break up with Ginny and I'll fall in love with you. You're the constant in my life, please. I can't do this without you here."

Draco reached out and took his hand, squeezing it weakly as he continued gasping for air and coughing.

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry Draco," Harry whispered.

Draco shook his head, and tried to say something, but flower petals spilled out of his mouth. Harry briefly saw the flowers crowding the back of his throat before more petals fell on the ground.

"Draco, you're gonna be okay," Blaise said desperately.

Draco just shook his head, trying to breathe and finding he couldn't.

"Breathe, Draco. Please," Harry begged.

Draco shook his head again, falling to the ground once more. Harry tightened his grip on Draco's hand and found no pressure in response.

Flower petals stopped falling to the ground.
