Those Thirty Days

A/N: Hey everyone! Thank you so much for checking this book out. Hope you guys liked the short story. So, this book won't be very long because I want to start my Dramione fanfic after this. ALSO, PLEASE READ THE A/N AT THE END, I WANT TO ASK SOMETHING VERY IMPORTANT TO YOU ALL (besides the Random Question). Read the A/N at the end to find out when the next oneshot will be out. On with the chapter!

"Hermione..."

"Yes?" She asked as she looked into his eyes. The most beautiful eyes she had ever seen, and she couldn't help but get lost in them again.

"I...I l-love... Ahh, forget it." He said before cupping her cheek and leaning down. He looked into her eyes, the most beautiful ones he had ever seen, and slowly his eyes fluttered close.

He slowly brought his lips to her, and kissed her. But before she could kiss him back, he pulled away and-

"Hermione!"

She immediately sat up in her bed. Rubbing her eyes, she saw Ginny standing next to her, carrying a purse in her hand.

"What time is it?" Hermione asked her.

"You are five minutes late to your work." Ginny informed as she checked her watch. Hermione eyes' widened at this, and she immediately bolted out of the room.

"Why didn't you wake me up sooner?" She heard her best friend's shout as she slammed the door of the bathroom.

Ginny shook her head and thought, She's been waking up late since the start of this month. She walked towards the calendar which Hermione had hung on the wall and stared at it.

"What's so special about this date?" Ginny asked herself as she touched the date on the calendar. She had seen Hermione marking this date as soon as she had bought this calendar, but she never got the answer to her question.

She was about to walk away from it, when with a gasp she turned around and stared at it again. The date which had been marked by her friend, it was today.

She immediately went towards the desk, and searched for Hermione's diary. When she found it after a few minutes, she tried opening it, but it didn't budge.

Ginny was about to give up, when she noticed the date on the cover.

Flashback

"I don't see the point in keeping a diary, Gin." Hermione said and kept the diary, which was a Christmas gift to her, aside.

"So you will never write something in it?" Ginny asked her.

"I didn't say that. I will probably start writing it on the day something special happens." Hermione shrugged.

"Oooh... And, will I get to know about that 'special thing'?" She asked her.

"Nope." Hermione grinned at her. "But, you will know the date of day when that happens. I'll probably write the date on the cover." She added after a moment.

"Hermione! I am like your sister, right? You can't hide things from me." Ginny glared at her and sat down next to her.

"I will definitely tell you about that, but, when the time will be right. Till then, this diary will be locked, and nobody will be able to open it. Except me, of course." Hermione chuckled at the look on her friend's face.

"Whatever. But I want all the details, understand?" Ginny told her.

Flashback over.

The date on the cover was same as the date marked on the calendar. The only difference was the year.

"What happened on this day?" Ginny asked no one as she stared at the date.

20 June 1999

--------

"Good morning, Hermione."

Hermione looked up from her desk to see her best friend leaning against the door. "Good morning, Harry." She greeted him.

He walked towards her desk, and pulled her up. Hugging her tightly, he asked, "Had that dream again?"

Hermione pulled away from him, and asked, "What dream?"

"Don't try to play innocent, 'Mione. You told me that you simply had a bad dream when you were late to work since the starting of this month. You have been telling me the same thing since days, Hermione. Why won't you tell me the truth?" He asked her.

Hermione sighed and told him to sit down in the chair in front of her desk. She closed the door with her wand, and cast the 'Muffliato' charm around them.

"It's the truth, Harry. I have been having the same dream since days. That is the only reason why I wake up late in the morning, and arrive late to work." She told him as she sat down as well.

"Were you having this dream before this month started?" He asked her.

She shook her head in reply. "I had had this dream last year for a while, but then I started using the Dreamless Sleep Potion, and they stopped."

"But then why aren't you taking that potion now?" Harry asked.

"I stopped taking them since June started because I want to know why that happened. I want to understand why he- I mean, what's so important in that dream." She told him.

"You know, you never really told me what happened when you-" He started, but she cut him off. She knew he was going to ask that question, as he had several times before.

"I told you nothing happened, Harry. I went, and then I came back, that's just it. There's no what happened in between." She said.

"I am not oblivious, Hermione. I know something happened and that's affecting you badly. I have seen you staring into space during meetings, not paying attention when Kingsley gives a speech, staying in your room most of the day, and... Do you want me to give you more examples?" He said, narrowing his eyes at her.

"Look, if me living with you and Ginny is bothering you, I will move out as soon as possible. I am already looking for an apartment." Hermione snapped at him.

Instead of getting angry, he simply smiled at her. "I never said that. I am glad you are living with us, Hermione, and it's certainly not bothering me and Ginny. You're my best friend, and I am worried about you."

When she didn't say anything, he stood up from his chair. "Meet me in my office in ten minutes. Kingsley has introduced a new Auror programme according to which all the Aurors across the world would have to work in pairs for a month. I'll give you and your partner the details in my office."

He was about to leave, when he heard her calling his name. "Yes?"

"Who's my partner?" She asked him.

He considered lying, but then thought the better of it. But, Hermione wished he hadn't told her when he said that name.

"Draco Malfoy."

-----------

"Is he here yet?"

Harry sighed and looked at her. This was the sixth time she had asked him this question. He didn't understand why she was asking him this question again and again instead of just looking at the door herself.

"He should be here any minute now." He told his best friend, who was currently facing the wall behind his desk while he leaned against his desk, going through the notice the Minister of Magic, Kingsley Shacklebolt had sent him.

"Is he here now?" He looked at her as she stared at the clock. Draco Malfoy was three minutes late. "He is never late."

How did she know about that? It couldn't have been because of Hogwarts. Everyone had to come to classes on time, there wasn't an option of being late.

So, when did she discover that he was always on time?

"Maybe I am missing something." Harry thought.

"Hermione, he will-" He started but was cut off. But for the first time that day, not by his best friend.

"Didn't know I was missed so much."

Hermione froze as soon as she heard his voice. It had been so long since she had heard it, but it didn't change. It never changed. His voice was as cold as before in front of everyone, but Hermione knew it wasn't like that when-

No, she reminded herself. She would not think about that.

Harry felt Hermione stiffen beside him as soon as Draco entered his office. She focused her attention on the files on his desk, and refused to meet his eyes.

He didn't know why she was acting like this.

"Maybe Gin was right. I am oblivious." He thought.

But then, he shook his head as soon as that thought came. He wasn't oblivious.

He just didn't know some things.

Yes, he thought. It's different.

"I wouldn't say that, Malfoy. However, I can say it's nice to see you." Harry told him, extending his hand to shake Draco's.

"Can't say the same, Potter." He said, although he shook his former enemy's hand.

"I hadn't seen you in so long that I had almost forgotten about your ever kind attitude." Harry smirked at him.

"Well, it was a nice introduction, but can we stop wasting our time? I don't know about you, but I am a very busy person." Draco crossed his arms in front of him.

"Of course. As you know, according to the Auror Programme, you'll be assigned a partner with whom you will work for a month. And, your partner is... Hermione. Hermione Granger."

"I know who she is Potter. You don't need to say her full name for me-" Draco started but stopped as she finally turned around to face him.

He had guessed that she could be his partner the moment he had seen her in Harry's office. Why else would she be there?

He had almost wanted to smirk or wink at her like he used to do, but he controlled himself. He didn't know it would be so hard to look at her eyes.

Those eyes. Those chocolate brown eyes that he had grown fond of. Those very eyes that he had looked into and-

No, he thought. He wouldn't think about that.

"So... Any introductions?" Harry awkwardly said as he looked to and fro between Hermione and Draco.

But those two were barely paying him any attention for they were busy staring intensely at each other.

Harry didn't want to be the third wheel.

He was just planning to leave the room, when finally Hermione spoke. "I don't want to work with him."

"You don't have a choice. You have to work with him. For a month, that is thirty days. There's no option of not working." Harry told her.

"Why can't you be her partner, Potter?" Draco asked him.

"Because I am Ron's partner, and we all know how he can be at times. Unless, you want to work with him?" Harry asked him.

"The day I work with that Weasel would be the day I would say you were a better seeker than me." Draco told him.

"The day is not far then. I'll be looking forward to it." Harry smirked at him as Draco rolled his eyes, but soon Harry became serious.

"Besides, Hermione, you are the best Auror who is also an investigator, and you Malfoy, are still the best Auror of the Australian Ministry, I am sure your work will be a success." He continued. "I have already explained everything to Hermione, if you have any doubt, Malfoy, you can ask her. All the details are here in this file."

"Well then, I should be going, I need to talk to someone. Try not to kill each other, yeah?" Harry grinned at them as he walked towards the door.

"Have fun in Asia!" He waved at them and left the office.

As soon as he came out, he looked at them through the window. Hermione was looking at the file, while Draco was watching her.

There were only three emotions that Harry could understand what Draco was feeling by the look on his face.

Sadness, guilt and regret.

He thought about his conversation with Narcissa yesterday as he continued to look at them through the window.

Flashback

"Mr Potter."

Harry turned around to see Narcissa Malfoy standing near the shop he had just exited. He looked around, and then walked towards her.

"Good morning, Mrs Malfoy." He nodded at her.

"Good morning, Mr Potter. You look rather busy at the moment." Narcissa told him, and Harry couldn't understand whether she was happy or sad as she said that.

"Umm...No. I was just buying a few chocolate frogs from Honeydukes, that shop recently opened here. I still have an hour left before I need to go to the Ministry, so I thought I would just walk around a bit." He said.

"Hmm... If you don't mind, can we go to the Leaky Cauldron? I want to talk to you about something. It's okay if you don't want to." She said.

"Oh no, it's okay. I was heading over there anyways, I wanted to drink Butterbeer, it's been so long since I had one." Harry shrugged and followed Narcissa to the Leaky Cauldron.

He had thought it was just a casual talk until she pulled out her wand, and cast the 'Muffliato' spell around them as they sat down.

"So, I heard about the new Auror programme." Narcissa said as she took a sip from her glass.

"How do you know about that? Nobody outside the Ministry has been informed yet." Harry asked her.

She simply raised an eyebrow at him. It took him a few moments to realize, and he said, "Oh right. You were one of those who invested your money in buying the best International Portkeys. I still need to thank you for that, without your support, this programme wouldn't have been implemented. Kingsley wanted to thank you as well, but he isn't much free nowadays."

Narcissa waved her hand at him. "It's fine. I liked using some of that Malfoy Money for a good cause. I rather liked the intention behind this new programme, so I helped you all. When will the Aurors from other countries arrive here?"

"Some of them have already come here. The rest, mainly from France, Australia, Canada will arrive tomorrow- wait, doesn't your son work for the Australian Ministry?" Harry asked her.

Narcissa nodded at him. "Yes, he does. He wanted to work as an Auror there as soon as he went to Australia. He lives near the Ministry there."

"I heard he was the best Auror there when I contacted the Australian Ministry of Magic. I was quite shocked when I heard that." Harry said, but quickly added, "No offence."

"None taken. I was shocked too, when he said that he would shift to Australia. I had no idea when he contacted the Ministry, and when they accepted him. All I know was, he left a day after he had come to meet me. I still remember that day quite well." She told him.

He just nodded in reply. "How is Miss Granger? I haven't seen her since she visited me last year." She said.

"She's good, working as perfectly as ever. She's our best Investigator-Auror. Working those two jobs could be quite tiring, but she somehow manages it. But lately, she is not as she used to be." He said.

"What do you mean by that?" Narcissa asked him, she was genuinely concerned about her.

"She has become quite recently. She doesn't interact much, nor comes out of her room most of the time. To be honest, I saw this change in her last year, two or three months after June, I guess. But, she she stopped being herself in June only. Even now, she would zone out during meetings, which is totally not like her." Harry explained it to her.

"When I enter her room sometimes, I see her staring at a particular date on the calendar. 20 June 2000, which is tomorrow. I tried asking her what's so special about that date, but she never really told me." He finished.

"Hmm... Interesting. Draco visits me every weekend, no matter how busy he is. I would say that he is also not himself anymore. He hadn't been his real self since last June. He is quite sad nowadays. Also, when I visited him last month, I saw a date marked in the calendar in his room. 20 June 2000. I asked him why it was marked, but he didn't tell me." Narcissa said.

"I don't think that's a coincidence. Maybe of both their conditions are linked in a way. And, as for that date, I don't know. Only those two can tell us." Harry told her.

"Wasn't Malfoy the Head Boy in last year?" He asked her, and she nodded.

"Maybe something happened that year, to both of them. And, that's why they are like this." Harry suggested. "But she didn't tell anyone about that year."

"Draco didn't say anything as well. However, I may not know all the details, but I think I know at least some parts of what happened." Narcissa said.

This time it was Harry's turn to raise an eyebrow at her. "Their Headmistress, Minerva McGonagall, is a close friend of mine. She might have told me a few things." She said.

Harry nodded in reply. He thought asking her about that, but didn't.

"I wanted a favor from you, Mr Potter." She said.

"What?" He asked.

"I want you to find out what happened to those two, and I'll do my best as well for that. I want my son back, and I know for sure that you want the same for Miss Granger. Maybe it would be a good thing if those two met each other." Narcissa said.

When Harry hesitated, she added, "Don't forget that you still owe me for lying to Voldemort. And, I helped to implement this programme as well. Surely you can do this much for me."

He nodded after a few moments. "I will see what I can do." He stood up as she removed that spell.

She stood up as well as he held out his hand to her. "Thank you again, Mrs Malfoy." He told her.

"You're welcome. And, please call me Narcissa." She shook his hand and they exited the pub. Harry turned towards her and said, "Then please call me Harry."

She smiled at him and he walked away. He had just walked a few feet, when he heard her call his name.

"Thank you, Harry." She said.

Flashback over

He smirked at them as he took out his wand. She was still looking at the file, and he was still looking at her.

Harry may or may not have requested Kingsley to make her Draco's partner.

"Time to tell Narcissa about this." He muttered and walked away from his office.

--------

The tension was so thick in the office that you could cut it with a knife.

Hermione had told him to follow her to her office, where they would discuss about the work they had been given.

Now, eleven minutes had passed since that, and neither of the two had uttered even a single word.

"Umm... We should probably go through the files." Draco finally said after a few moments.

Hermione nodded and made a copy of the first file, giving it to Draco.

They spent the next hour reading the file, and making notes in silence. The only sound which could be heard was the scribbling of the quills on the parchments.

When they both were done, Draco handed her his parchment, and kept it inside the file, along with her parchment.

Now that they had nothing else to do, Hermione started fiddling with her fingers. Draco almost wanted to laugh at that, he perfectly knew that she only did that when she was nervous about something.

"Look, Granger, if we want this task to be a success, we will need to interact with each other. We will need to be civil with each other, and not just ignore each other's presence." He told her.

"It's been so long since I have heard you say Granger." Hermione muttered, too quite for him to listen. "What do you suggest we do?" She asked him.

"You should probably forget about that day, I know you are thinking about that. Just pretend that it never happened." Draco said, trying his best not let his voice show the emotions he was feeling.

Hermione let out a humorless laugh. "Pretend like it never happened? Do you even know how long has it been since that day?"

"I do. It has been a year. I hope you know today's date, right? 20 June 2000." Draco told her.

"Why should I forget about that day since I clearly know that you haven't forgotten about that?" Hermione asked him.

"I would be lying if I say I had forgotten about that day. I remember every single detail. I don't think I'll ever forget that." Draco told her.

"Then why should I pretend that it never happened? I know you regret what happened. But what part in it, that I can't tell." Hermione said.

"I don't know how many times I have to say this again, but here we go. You don't know me, Granger, so don't act like you do." He shook his head at her.

Hermione sighed. "Just tell me why that happened. Why y-you-"

"Not all questions have an answer, Granger. Not all actions have a reason behind them." Draco told her.

Hermione glared at him, and stood up. She narrowed her eyes at him as she said those words, and Draco knew she was determined to do that.

"I want an answer, Malfoy, and I promise you I will find it, whether you cooperate or not."

----------

One week later...

It would be an understatement if Hermione said that she hated that week.

According to the programme, they had to work on the details, and make plans to capture the remaining death eaters in the first week.

In the second week, they had to travel to the countries assigned to them, and come back to England on the seventh day to show their progress. Third week was the same.

In the fourth and last week, they had to return to England and work on the trials and testimonies of the captured death eaters.

"Malfoy is an incorrigible prat who's ego is as high as the height of Mount Olympus on the Empire State building." Was Hermione's statement as she worked with him on the last day of the first week.

Not that Draco had a chance to disagree with her.

"Why did you go to Australia?" She asked him. She had her back towards him as she arranged her books on the shelves.

"Reasons." Was his answer.

"Tell me about those reasons." She sat down back in her chair, across from him.

"You are not my girlfriend. I don't have to tell you everything." He told her.

"Prat." She muttered under her breath, but he heard her and raised an eyebrow at her.

"Look, I am here for a month, probably three weeks more, just for this programme and nothing more. I will go back to Australia as soon as this is over. That is a promise." He told her.

"You make promises that you eventually break. This one will too, I know." Hermione sadly smiled at him.

"And pray tell me, what promises did I break?" He asked her.

"I don't know about others, but you made a lot of promises to me. One of them was that you would come with me to Australia to help bring my parents' memories back. But you..." Hermione faltered at the end.

Instead of answering her, he stood up and went towards the shelf. He would take each book out, turn a few pages, and place them back, of course not in their correct places.

Hermione slowly pulled out a file from the stack. She looked at him, and then glanced back at the name on the file.

'Draco Malfoy'.

She turned the pages until she found his records mentioned by the Australian Ministry. She needed to know why and when did he leave.

Unfortunately, the date on which he joined wasn't mentioned clearly. Someone had scribbled over it.

She was about to close the file when a certain date mentioned under the 'leaves' section caught her eye.

23 June 1999.

The day her parents came back to England. The day she got to know someone from the Australian Ministry had helped bringing her parents back to England so that she would be able to bring back their memories.

"The best Auror in the Australian Ministry had brought them back. He recently joined, a day or two back, and he's already the best they have. Nobody else could find them except him, I was told that he didn't go back to his home for one day because he was busy finding them. He's probably either very stubborn or determined. Unfortunately, he went back to Australia as soon as he came here."

Harry had told her that when she had asked him who had brought them back.

Best Auror.

Recently joined.

Very stubborn or very determined.

She glanced at Draco, her eyes widening in realization.

He had probably joined the Ministry one or two days before he took the leave.

It couldn't have been on 20 June 1999. That day...

He left as soon as he brought them to England.

She stood up and went towards him. He turned to face her as she said those words.

"You helped me find my parents when everyone else had given up."

----------

"I don't like this, Ginny."

She looked up at her friend to see her pacing in front of her bed. Ginny was currently sitting on the chair near the desk, Hermione's diary in her hands.

"It is only thirty days, Hermione. You are lucky that it's not thirty one days. Besides, a week has already passed." She told her.

"You don't understand, Ginny. Working him after that day..." Hermione sat down on her bed.

"What day?" Ginny asked her.

"20 June 1999." Hermione looked up to see Ginny holding her diary in her hands.

"It's time you tell me everything. What exactly happened on that day, Hermione?" She asked her.

"Are you sure you want to know?" Hermione asked her, and Ginny nodded in reply.

She sighed. "Okay then. You see, that day was..."
