Amorous Maximus Pt. 2
"Ginny, I don't know what to do."
Hermione paced back and forth across the living room nervously as Ginny watched her from the couch, taking in everything Hermione had just told her.
"Maybe he was smelling the flowers on your desk?" Ginny suggested, gesturing towards Hermione. "You still have those, right?"
"I had to toss them a couple days ago," Hermione said in a dead-pan voice, not looking up from the carpet as she continued to pace. "They were dead. There's no way it wasn't the perfume, I didn't have anything else that he would've smelled and I used that perfume."
"Didn't you say you tested it on Ron?" Ginny asked.
"Yeah, this morning. He said it didn't smell like anything and assumed it was water."
Ginny frowned and ran a hand through her hair. "It has to be a fluke. There's no way the perfume actually works like that. Harry smelled it fine."
"Yeah, and you two are in love," Hermione said, pausing finally and looking at Ginny. "Ron should have smelled mine but he didn't."
"Okay...so do you think that means Draco loves you and Ron doesn't?" Ginny asked hesitantly.
Hermione opened and closed her mouth, unsure of how to answer. She hadn't really thought about that aspect of it; did this mean Ron didn't love her? And even more unsettling, did Draco secretly love her?
"I don't even know how to figure that out," Hermione said finally, resuming her pacing. "Ron hasn't been acting any differently."
"What about Draco?" Ginny asked curiously.
"Nope, the acknowledgement of the perfume is the first thing he's really said about me," Hermione said, thinking back over all her interactions with Draco at work. "Otherwise he's kept it very professional."
"That doesn't mean he doesn't have feelings for you," Ginny shrugged.
Hermione raised an eyebrow at the red head. "Why are you even entertaining the idea that Draco might have feelings for me?"
"Things have been boring lately, I need a little drama," Ginny grinned. "And honestly, I have a feeling that you and Ron won't last."
Hermione paused again and stared at Ginny. "What makes you think that?"
"'Mione, love, I know you're bored with him," Ginny said, smiling reassuringly now. "You need excitement in your life; my brother's a homebody who doesn't want to deviate from his routine. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, but I don't think it's a good fit for you. I didn't want to say anything because I thought you were happy but when you passed up that promotion last month because you would need to travel more and Ron wasn't happy with that...I'm honestly worried he's holding you back."
Chewing on the inside of her cheek, Hermione thought over it and realized Ginny was right. Ron was starting to influence her career decisions and she had found herself regretting them but keeping it to herself.
"Okay so besides all that," Hermione said then, shaking her head. "I'm still engaged to Ron. And what if Draco doesn't actually feel like that about me?"
Ginny shrugged again but then gave Hermione a sly look. "Hermione, do you like Draco?"
"What?" Hermione exclaimed. "Why would you even consider that?"
"Because you haven't said anything negatively about him possibly liking you," Ginny grinned.
Hermione paused again, running a hand through her hair. "I don't know...he has become much nicer in the past few years. I've had to work with him on a few cases and he's always been professional. Even cracked jokes a few times."
Ginny waggled her eyebrows and Hermione shot her a look, holding up her left hand. "Engaged, Gin. To your brother no less."
"And yet you have my blessing to do want you want," Ginny shrugged, leaning back into the couch. "I really think you'll be happier out of your relationship with Ron regardless of who you end up with."
Hermione sat quietly down on the chair next to the couch, looking off towards the fire and thinking heavily on what she wanted to do.
A week later there was another knock on her door and she saw the familiar blond head of Draco Malfoy standing in her doorway.
"Hi," She said nervously, fidgeting with the pen in her hand.
"Hey," He greeted, holding up papers in his hand. "Just wanted to return the papers I borrowed from you last week."
"Oh, yeah." She stood up and reached for them, avoiding his eyes as he took a few steps forward.
He paused slightly, pulling the papers back towards him and raising an eyebrow. "Is everything alright?"
She blinked. "Yes, sorry; been a little distracted lately."
He didn't say anything for a moment before asking, "I know it's not my place, but is everything alright between you and your fiancé?"
Hermione didn't answer, the words failing as she opened her mouth. He noticed her hesitation and held the papers out again.
"I know I'm probably the last person on your list, but if you need to talk you know where my office is," He said quietly.
He turned away and started to walk out but she stepped forward. "Wait!"
Draco immediately turned back around, giving her a curious look. She paused again, unsure exactly of what she wanted to say as she moved her weight from one foot to the other.
"Last week," She started slowly. "You mentioned my perfume. What did it smell like to you?"
His expression changed to confusion as he said, "Well...it smelled like flowers, I guess. I just know it smelled really nice. You're wearing it again though, aren't you?"
"So you can actually smell it," Hermione muttered, beginning to pace back and forth.
"Well, yeah," Draco laughed slightly, still confused. "It's perfume, right?"
"Perfume mixed with Amortentia," She said, avoiding his eyes. "And only a particular kind of person is supposed to be able to smell it."
"What do you mean?" He asked, his expression slowly changing.
"Well...." She paused again, trying to figure out what to say. But then she shook her head, waving him off. "Nevermind, it's ridiculous. Sorry, I didn't mean to take up your time-"
"Hermione."
She looked up at him then but couldn't read the expression on his face as he put his hands in his pockets.
"I know what the perfume is," He said quietly. "It's from George's shop, isn't it?"
She stared at him in shock, and he simply smiled. The only words she was able to get out at that moment were, "Ron couldn't smell it...he said it was water..."
Draco's smile widened but didn't move. "So, what do you think of that?"
Hermione faltered as her thoughts raced and she couldn't quite figure out what exactly she thought of it. On the one hand she had come to realize that Ginny was right about her relationship with Ron; but on the other hand, she wasn't sure how Draco was going to fit into the situation. She had thought about him a lot more in the past week but wasn't sure exactly how she felt about him yet.
But when he crossed the room and leaned down slowly, she didn't move. And when he kissed her, she didn't pull away.
It was a short kiss and he pulled back quickly, searching her face for a reaction. She blinked up at him, her mind completely blank for the first time in a week. They stood there silently and watched each other, waiting for the other to move first.
After a few moments though she stepped up, surprising him with a returned kiss that he happily accepted. She reluctantly pulled away after a little bit, her cheeks burning.
He chuckled and said, "I was not expecting this to happen today."
"That makes two of us," She said with a smile. "Now what?"
"Well..." He rubbed the back of his neck and asked, "How about dinner tonight?"
Her smile widened as she said, "Dinner sounds great! I just need to take care of something first."
She pulled the ring off her finger and set it on the desk as he grinned.
A/N: you all asked for a part two and I was happy to deliver! I'm so happy you all loved the first one, I may need to turn this into a small story because it's just super cute to me but in the meantime I hope you all enjoy! <3
