"Perfect doesn't exist Taehyung, and I can see that you're trying so hard to find something that doesn't exist."
Taehyung scoffs loudly, "so you're telling me, that the taste of that in your mouth isn't perfect? This bangs differently." Flicking his blonde hair out of his eyes, Jungkook leans in closer, "yes Taehyung. I'm telling you, that this isn't the best flavour of ice cream! Mint chocolate chip cookie dough is probably one of the worst flavours! Who likes a mint flavored cookie? What's that? The sound of no one replying because they don't like that flavour!" Jungkook watches as Taehyung's eyes drip with sadness, staring at the mint ice cream in his bowl.
The two boys were now watching the sunset in the well lit diner, eating ice cream together, sitting in a window booth, across of each other. The scene was now set, all that was needed was a well written script.
Jungkook was trying not to leap over the table and attack Taehyung. Jungkook was more than furious at the fact that Taehyung thought that mint chocolate was one of the best flavours of ice cream. Like who wants something minty and cold in their mouth. That's like chewing gum and drinking water. A bad fucking combination.
And Taehyung, well for some reason, he was so upset that Jungkook didn't like the flavor of mint chocolate. It just tasted so unique to Taehyung, and not that sweet but not too strong. And Taehyung would just eat the ice cream whenever he'd feel down, or when he was happy. Ice cream was just a happy food for Taehyung. "Can you at least try it?" He asks softly, looking at Jungkook with puppy eyes, that were twinkling with the light reflections. And Jungkook didn't know why, but Jungkook almost felt compelled to softly take Taehyung's bowl, and to pick up the spoon, allowing some of the gentle green ice cream to melt on his tongue.
After a while of letting is swirl around his tongue, taste buds being overpowered with the cold, minty taste of the ice cream, Jungkook realizes that it's not that bad. The flavour isn't strong, but it's there. It's...almost comfortable, and it's unique. Taehyung, who was looking at Jungkook with expectant eyes, waits for the younger's new opinion on his favourite ice cream. "It's good. Really good," Jungkook says, smiling at Taehyung with a genuine and real smile.
"I knew you'd like it. People don't like it because it's green. But hey, I've got green hair and they still like it," Taehyung adds, taking another spoon of ice cream, slowly licking the spoon, allowing it to stay on his tongue a little longer than usual, before pulling it out with a pop. Jungkook eyes the spoon for a while before he mumbles, "shut up, you hair looks like snot."
Taehyung, with wide eyes, feels his hair, letting himself twirl his long fingers between his fading green locks, " 's not like snot, it's more like this ice cream."
For some reason, Taehyung was acting more like a child. And that made Jungkook adore the older in a cute way. If Jungkook had knew this from the start, he would have offered Taehyung ice cream from the minute that they had met. Sitting across from the mint haired male, Jungkook starts to really like the colour "mint", feeling familiarized with the dull but bright colour.
"Can I feel your hair?" Jungkook asks, reaching towards Taehyung. He meekly nods, allowing Jungkook to softly use his fingers to run his hands through Taehyung's mint locks. Eyes closing at the feel of Jungkook's gentle hands playing with his fingers, Taehyung relaxes into Jungkook's hold, immediately feeling comfortable.
The younger relishes in the feel of Taehyung's silk like hair, "wow..." Jungkook whispers, before finally sitting back in his seat, "your hair is so soft, you have to tell me what conditioner you use," Jungkook giggles, quickly finishing his melting vanilla and strawberry ice cream cake. Taehyung, who's now feeling so sleepy, just mumbles out an incoherent answer, to which Jungkook laughs loudly, "you like it when people play with your hair?"
Taehyung just nods, his eyes shutting the longer he remembered the feel of Jungkook's hold.
Why was he feeling like this again?
Like Jungkook held everything important in the world. Like Jungkook was the only one who could make him feel better in the darkness.
Jungkook watches as Taehyung loses himself in his own thoughts. Playing around with the almost liquid ice cream. Pupils dilated, Jungkook sees how so many thoughts are racing through his mind like they were all competing on a race track. And he almost wanted to ask Taehyung if it was okay to climb into his mind and then just analyse every thought from the top to the bottom, end to the start.
There was just something about the older that just pulled Jungkook in. And the more that Jungkook tried pulling away, the more he felt himself getting sucked into those swirling pools of darkness. The blonde boy didn't need any interactions from Taehyung, or any words. All that he needed was a glance from the older, and Jungkook would feel himself getting sucked in again.
And maybe it didn't mean anything, or maybe it did, but Jungkook didn't want to run away anymore. Because running away just didn't feel right anymore. It just felt wrong.
"I'm sorry for getting you into trouble on your first day," Taehyung says, playing around with the left over ice cream that was in his bowl. He felt the need to owe Jungkook an apology for being such an asshole, especially after this. Especially after the fact that Jungkook went out of his own way to make the older feel better.
Jungkook chuckles, "don't even worry about it. I've already forgotten it. Plus, it would be so nice if we could just become friends. Believe it or not, I don't really enjoy arguing and fighting with people." Taehyung dramatically fake gasps, "what?!?! You're lying!"
"Oh shut up," Jungkook giggles.
They both laugh loudly, and Jungkook looks out of the window, and sees the golden glow of the sunset casting a beautiful paint splatter of a deep rooted yellow all over the buildings, windows of stores and pavements.
"I have always believed that the sunset of a long day would always have the ability to make me feel better, make anyone feel better," Jungkook adds at the end, glancing towards Taehyung who was staring at the younger. "And does it make you feel better?" Taehyung asks, his eyes never leaving Jungkook's onyx ones.
"I can ask you the same thing, how are you feeling? Especially when you look at that sunset."
And Taehyung looks, and he looks...he looks so closely that he's almost observing every little speck, every little atom that is used to make the golden glow cast over the city. It makes him feel....full. His heart content with the fact that there was still beauty in the world. If you just stopped and looked around you, you'd see that there was beauty in even the most simple of things, the most plain things. If you just stopped.
"But a sunrise is also beautiful too," Taehyung begins slowly, making sure to let every word of his drip out with a tone of deep seriousness and husk. Jungkook tilts his head, questioning Taehyung. And so Taehyung takes a deep breath, ready to explain why. His thoughts, especially thoughts like these, never left his brain. They always marinated in his mind, spoiled him for choice, before finally fading away to the back of his mind. And no one had cared enough to ask him if he could let them know what he thought.
But here he was.
Sitting in front of a boy that only knew him for a week and a few hours at most, ready to open his heart up about something as....simple as a sunrise. Woah.
Let's deep that.
"A sunrise...is the start of the new day. It's almost like a reminder that there will always be a new day. That no trauma, no matter how bad, lasts forever. And just like a sunset, it casts it's light onto our surroundings, but at the crack of dawn it's like letting out a breath that you didn't know you were holding. And that's what I feel is so beautiful about it. The fact that there's always going to be something new. Whether everyone sees it as wrong, as long as it's right for you."
Jungkook's grin turns beautiful, just like the sunset and sunrise. And Taehyung's heart races as he finally realises just how pretty and soft Jungkook was. Wait what? Why was he feeling like this? Jungkook wasn't even that special. Yes he was. Look at what Jungkook made happen.
Internally arguing with himself, Taehyung shakes all of the thoughts out of his mind, just allowing himself to forget every thought about his unknown and crazy feelings; he wanted to just relax in the comfortable aura that he and Jungkook had created.
"Can I ask you something?"
Taehyung looks at Jungkook, who's waiting for Taehyung's reply. And the mint haired male just nods before looking out of the window once more. Jungkook nervously picks at his fingers, "why...why are you so against the thought of being gay?"
Freezing, Taehyung looks at Jungkook, who's eyes are gentle and more scared to hear the wrong words falling out of Taehyung's lips. What if he was homophobic? What if he just didn't like Jungkook? So many what ifs.
"...I'm not against it."
Wide eyed, Jungkook stares at Taehyung, "wait, if you're not against it why do you feel the need to always let me know that you're straight? It's a disease to lie about your sexuality you know," Jungkook adds, trying to lighten the mood, it was obvious that sexuality was a sensitive topic for Taehyung. Although he doesn't laugh, Taehyung does smile a little, noticing how Jungkook was trying to make the older more cheery.
"My mum is a massive homophobe," Taehyung finally says. He doesn't know why he suddenly decided to tell Jungkook about his mother, but he did. And there was no going back now.
"I can relate with you there. But my life wasn't theirs to decide, so I was still myself every step of the way. And when they couldn't accept me or my sister, well...we left. And I'm glad. Even though I sometimes miss my old friends, and all of the old spots I used to go to, just to get away from life, I won't regret walking away from a toxic family. Have you ever thought about running out and never looking back?" Jungkook says, taking Taehyung's hand in his, trying to get the older to open up a little bit more.
Slow progress, was still progress at that.
And Taehyung could care less right now as to why he was suddenly opening his heart up and putting it on a silver platter for Jungkook to eat up. It just felt right. "Countless times. But I don't have a dad. And my stepdad, although he's accepting of anyone, is never home. He doesn't even feel like a dad. The relationship between me and him was never built up. She just one day introduced me to him and told me that they were getting married," Taehyung bitterly says, looking down at their intertwined hands.
"And your dad? Your biological one?"
Taehyung shrugs, his eyes never leaving his hand which was slowly tightening around Jungkook's. He doesn't know why, but it made him feel so relaxed, it made him forget everything about his mother and father, and just made him relish in the moment that he was spending with Jungkook, the first person to care about Taehyung.
"I don't know much about him, my mother never told me much about him. Other than the fact that he committed suicide because he was gay."
Like a puzzle piece, everything was finally connecting, and now Jungkook didn't need to hear anything else from Taehyung to understand how deeply troubled he was. And now, Jungkook vowed to do everything he could to make Taehyung feel better.
Say goodbye to every feeling of never-ending loneliness Kim Taehyung, because Jeon Jungkook's here now...and he's here to stay.
