Chapter 4
I tried suppressing a smile as I walked down the hallway, headed toward my favorite class, Dactylography. If you're planning on being a writer, you had to know how to type fast!
The thought of having Dactylography as a double class today made me smile wider. Two hours of nothing but typing was my idea of a perfect class.
I jogged for a few meters before I was in front of the computer cabinet. I inhaled and entered it, where I was greeted by a good part of my friends. About five were missing but I shrugged, some of them might have slept in. And there were still five minutes left before class started. They'll show up any minute now, I'm sure.
"Good morning, Mr. Maxwell," I smiled at my teacher, who was drinking coffee and reading newspapers in order to kill time until class started. He looked up at me and smiled back.
"Morning Lorena," he smiled warmly at me. I loved Mr. Maxwell, he was one of the best teachers here, and everybody loved him.
"Oh, that reminds me," he said and sat up straight. "Lorena, Claire wants you to go and rehearse this play for the end of the school year. I let the others who had parts go too," I felt my heart drop. Claire was Miss Dawson's first name, which meant that not only I'd be missing Dactylography, but I'd also have to see Louis. And maybe kiss him.
"Mr. Maxwell, do I have to?" desperation was obvious in my voice. The idea of maybe having to kiss Louis today was the least appealing thought that's gone through my head today.
Mr. Maxwell sighed. "Look, you're only gonna be doing that for one class. Don't think you're gonna miss both Dactylography classes, Lorena," he grinned up at me. On multiple occasions, he'd noticed/been told that his class is my favorite.
It was my turn to sigh. "Alright. Where is this rehearsal being held?"
"Amphitheater 72," Mr. Maxwell said with a satisfied smile. After saying goodbye to him and the friends of mine that stayed in the cabinet, I was on my way to amphitheater 72.
It was in another building, so I entered it just as the bell rung. There were about 10-15 people in there, and most of them turned around to look at who came in.
"Ah, Lorena!" Miss Dawson was grinning while walking toward me, looking in an oddly good mood. "You made it! Please join us," she practically walked me down the room, her arm on my back. It was weird seeing her like this, but then I remembered she'd dedicated her life to acting, so I could only imagine how much she must be already enjoying this.
"Okay, everyone, take your places! First scene, Evan and Milo are sitting at the bar! Come on boys!" Miss Dawson exclaimed, and soon, Evan and Milo were sitting at this imaginary bar. I was sitting in the back with the others, observing the two guys.
"Hey," someone whispered, and I turned to my left only to find Louis taking a seat next to me. My heart instantly sped up, even though he couldn't do much while Miss Dawson and a dozen of other people were there.
"Hi," I said slowly and continued watching the first scene of the play. Louis was practically laying in his seat, while I was sitting up straight and tensed, both my arms on the long desk in front of me.
All of the scenes were pretty short, approximately 5-8 minutes, and just when Evan and Kylie kissed, the bell rang. As soon as it did, I felt like I had lost 20 pounds; I wasn't going to kiss Louis today!
I stood up with everyone else, ready to run out of the amphitheater, when Miss Dawson started shouting.
"Everyone! Get back in your seats! We're continuing this throughout the pause as well!" she shouted and I cursed under my breath. I was after all going to kiss Louis.
"Cloe, Tomlinson, get up here!" I made my way up to her, much slower than Louis. He almost seemed excited about the kissing scene.
"Okay, do you know your lines for this scene?" we both nodded. "Okay. Go!" Miss Dawson shouted and I mentally killed her in my mind.
"Well that went well, don't you think?" Louis cut me off with his line in the scene.
I cleared my throat. "Yeah, even though you weren't of much help."
Louis huffed in disbelief and I could feel his eyes on me. "Me? I wasn't of much help? What about you? All you were doing the entire time was bragging!"
Wow, I thought, he really was good at this. It seemed as though we were talking in real life. I turned my head to him, "Well at least I wasn't lying about knowing German, thank you very much!" I tried making it sound as realistic as I could.
"What are you saying, that all the A's I'd gotten in German in the past two years mean nothing?"
I laughed bitterly, just as the script said. "You're a butt-kisser Tommo, we all know you're not that deserving of those A's."
Louis stood up straight, his whole body now facing me. "Wanna try me?" I could literally hear the smirk in his voice.
I looked at him, suddenly nervous as I realized how close we were getting to the kissing scene. "Try you?" I frowned as I said the words.
Louis shrugged casually. "Yeah, try me."
I gulped before saying my next line. "Okay. Say something. Make it lenghty," I was surpried to hear my voice so firm, considering the fact that I was falling apart on the inside.
Louis cleared his voice, and looked as if he was thinking. Then he cleared his voice again and stood straighter, beginning to speak.
"Du bist das schönste Mädchen, das ich je gesehen habe und ich würde dich wirklich gerne küssen."
I stared at him, as I was supposed to. But that went on longer than it should have. Much longer. I couldn't, I just couldn't make myself say "das kannst du".
"Lori?" Louis said barely over a whisper, trying to remind me that it was my turn to talk. When it didn't work for a few seconds, he said, "Lorena, this is the part where you tell me I can kiss you," he joked, probably trying to make me relax. But it didn't work. If anything, it made me freeze on a whole new level.
"Cut! Cut, cut, cut, cut!" Miss Dawson yelled, scaring the shit out of me. She jogged toward us, and she looked like she was going to beat me up with a baseball bat.
"Cloe, what's wrong?" she said sternly.
"I-I'm sorry. I froze. Sorry," I rambled, and that seemed to satisfy her.
"Don't do it again. Louis, starting from your line in German. Go!" she exclaimed as she moved away from us to watch us. Louis cleared his throat and repeated his line.
"Du bist das schönste Mädchen, das ich je gesehen habe und ich würde dich wirklich gerne küssen," he stared at me intently, his eyes encouraging me to continue.
I gulped. "Das kannst du," I finally said, my voice as firm as I could make it.
Louis looked at me surprised with a smile on his face. "Wirklich?" he was still smiling as we went on with the scene.
I closed my eyes for a second before letting the crucial word tumble off my lips.
"Ja."
Louis smiled wider, and I swear it seemed as if he literally couldn't believe what was going on. He took a step closer to me and put his hands on both my cheeks, before slowly planting his lips on mine.
I didn't move during the kiss at all, my body nor my lips. When we parted, the urge to run out of this room was stronger than ever before.
Sadly, Miss Dawson had other things in mind.
"Cloe, why didn't you kiss him back?" she said as she approached us. Woah, really? She could see that I didn't kiss him back being 20 feet away from us?
"Um, I-" I started, confused, but she cut me off.
"Are you two related? Because I really can't see another reason why you wouldn't kiss him back," she said, as if me not kissing Louis back was a serious issue.
"No, we're not," Louis replied to her question with a small chuckle, which seemed to soften her a bit.
"Repeat the kiss. And make it believable this time," she pointed at me as she walked backwards until she was at her previous place.
I looked at Louis again as he put his hands on my cheeks again. This was going to be something new, seeing as he had kissed me before, but I had never kissed him back.
I soon felt the familiar feeling as his lips connected with mine again, and after a second of hesitation, I finally kissed him back. I heard him exhale through his nose as soon as I did, and I couldn't tell if it was in relief, joy or surprise.
"Do something with your hands!" Miss Dawson shouted at me, making the others laugh. Louis let out a chuckle from his nose and I couldn't help but curl my lips a bit as we kissed. My hands soon found their way up Louis torso as his arms went down to my waist. In a matter of seconds my arms were around Louis' neck, and his were around my waist as we really got into our kissing.
If someone had told me I would be kissing Louis like this, I wouldn't have believed them in a million years. I guess I had missed kissing, as I had my last boyfriend in freshman year. And, as much as I hated to admit it, Louis was a pretty damn good kisser.
"That's what I'm talking about!" Miss Dawson said before laughing, and I could hear students clapping and whistling at us after her comment. Louis pulled away from me and started laughing, still holding me. I laughed as well as I noticed everyone was on their feet while clapping. We almost got more claps than Evan and Kylie when they kissed.
About a minute later, we were finally dismissed from "class", and I hurried to make it to Dactylography as soon as possible. That is, until I heard my name being shouted from behind.
I turned around and saw Louis jogging toward me.
"Hey," he said. I waited for him to say something else, but he didn't.
"Louis, I have class."
"I don't," he smiled at me. "I have the first two periods off."
I sighed, feeling a little jealous. I had no free periods today, which meant eight classes for me. This was the only reason I hated Fridays.
"Well, I don't, and mine starts in about-" I cut myself off to take a look at my wristwatch, but as soon as I did, the bell rung.
"Well, now," I said as Louis chuckled. "So, until we meet. Bye Louis."
I turned around, but he grabbed my arm and turned me back to him.
"I was going to ask you, do you, um, do you wanna go grab lunch with me later?" he asked, hope very audible in his voice.
I cleared my throat before putting my thoughts into words.
"Louis, that kiss in there meant nothing," I said stenly, looking him right in the eyes. To my surprise, his smile faded and was replaced by a frown.
"What? Seriously?" he asked like he couldn't believe what he was hearing, while I couldn't believe that he actually gave a fuck.
"Yeah," I said a little frustrated, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. "I had to kiss you back so I could get Dawson off my non-existent dick."
While he always laughed at things like the last one I said, his frown never left his face this time.
"So you're saying that- ah, nevermind," the frustration in his voice was obvious as he ran his hand through his hair.
"Can you at least join me as, as a friend?" he asked, "please" written all over his face.
"We're not friends either. Goodbye Louis," I said, sternness never leaving my voice. I turned around and left him standing there. But before I did, I saw a heartbreaking grimace wash over his face, and he was probably going to say something, but I was already gone.
Nevertheless, the look on his face haunted me for the rest of the day. Brilliant Louis, really great. Make me feel guilty too.
I'll see him again, I thought as I was walking from my last period, tired and wanting to sleep through the whole weekend. Everything's gonna be alright.
I couldn't believe I cared for his feelings.
Once again, brilliant. Brilliant.
