THE BITTEN BOY
I wake up. I look where Ellie had slept. She was eating some berries.
"Morning, sleepyhead," She said, not making any eye contact. "Sleep well?"
"Heh, could have slept better." I respond.
"Oh. You were thinking about your parents last night. Weren't you?"
"....Yeah." I look at my hands.
She looks at me with sympathy. "Hey," She whispers. My gaze turns to her. "We're going to find them. I promise."
"How can you be sure?"
"I just am."
I smile, and before long we're walking through the woods, in the direction of the village.
We don't talk for hours. I start to get the feeling of danger. That it could be nearby. Ellie must think different. She's completely calm.
"So..." I finally break the silence between us. Hoping to start up a conversation. "So...?" She responds.
"...So, how long until we arrive?" I ask.
She looks up at the sky, cupping her hands over her eyes. "Well, we should arrive there by nightfall. Depends how quick we are,"
"Good. I'd like to get there as fast as possible."
"Yeah, by now you're probably worried sick."
"A little."
She takes her pack off her back, and looks through it. "We're running low on food. I guess we won't have lunch today, huh?"
"..I could.. Hunt.."
"Hunt?"
"Well, yeah."
"Um, I don't think you need to use the bow quite yet. You haven't even learned how to use it."
"Then why don't show me?"
She laughs. "Show you?"
"Who am I? A tutor?" She laughs more. "Well, fine then. I'll go learn myself." I start walking to my right.
"...You're serious?"
"Yup." I say as I walk deeper into the wood.
"I'll be right here when you get back with nothing."
"Okay," I respond. "And I'll come back expecting some money."
"Are you betting me!?" I can tell she laughed a little.
"Ha! Why not?" I turned, and said with a smile.
"Well, okay then. I'll give you five coins if you come back with a dead rabbit. And you give me five coins if you come back with nothing. Got that?" She says smiling.
"Deal." She laughs, and I walk away.
You've gotta come back with something, Drake. To prove her wrong, I think. Kindly.
I look all through out the woods, trying to make a path so I can find my way back. I look for about an hour.
I look and look for a rabbit to shoot. Nothing. Does the wood even have rabbits? Yes, it does. I remember seeing them hop all around my house that one year when Owen said 'bruh' the whole year.
The thought makes me laugh, thinking of all the times he randomly said it everyday.
I never knew why, but he just did. I quickly turn my head, without thinking. I heard something...
Could it have been a rabbit? No. It sounded like something larger. Human sized, maybe.
I walked slowly in the direction, being as quiet as possible. I look through some bushes, and leaves from trees.
Easy, Drake, I squint my eyes, to get a better look in the place I heard the noise. You don't want to scare it away -- If it is an it.
Then, out of no where, I hear someone behind me, I turn, and find myself dodging a spear attack. I look at the guy, terrified. Then I notice his arm.
He's been bit. There are snakes in these woods, but not any normal snakes. Angeral Snakes. One bite from them, and the venom makes you hostile in just a couple minutes.
"Its your fault. ...You're the one who did this to me." They say things. Things that aren't true. But, this I never knew about.
I was too shocked to speak.
"What do you have to say for yourself?"
I don't answer.
He, angered, takes off a pack (yelling at me), and gets out multiple knifes. I assume he doesn't notice my bow n arrows. He starts aggressively tossing them at me.
I don't think of shooting him, because I'm not a murderer. So, I decide to flee, dodging the knifes as I run.
The supply seems endless, as I follow the path back to Ellie. The more I go, the closer the knifes get to my head, "Ellie!" I shout without knowing, until it echoed.
Out of nowhere, the knifes have disappeared, but I keep running, going as fast as possible. "Oh, don't worry," I hear a voice behind me. "I've got far more!"
Before long, more are being tossed at me. I finally get the sense to get an arrow out, and shoot the guy. It's my only way of surviving.
I grab a arrow out of my quiver, and try to apply it to my bow as I run. I'm successful. Then, I slide across the ground on my knees, landing in the area where Ellie sat.
I turn around, and I shoot. Piercing the boys chest, and watching him fall on his knees, then his back.
Breathing slowly, then stopping. I breath heavy... trying to catch my breath... I turn and look at Ellie, whose mouth was wide open, and her eyes staring at me.
