Chapter 39: Kate joins the party and probably leaves traumatised (Hiccup)
Previously:
I pull inferno back and step away from the alien, turning away to fight whatever is closest to me, just to freeze.
"Wow, Hiccup. Not even a hello? I'm offended."
"DAGUR?!"
Refer to the last chapter for Peter's recollection of the recent events
Now
I stare at him, dumbfounded as my chest heaves from the exhaustion setting into my body. Am I going crazy? Seeing hallucinations? There's no way I'm ACTUALLY looking at Dagur, right?!
He just grins at me. "Never would've thought I'd see you running around a battle field!"
I shake my head, lifting the front of my helmet up. "I'm going crazy. How did you get here?!"
"Ohh nothing much, just some weird storm." He shrugs, looking around. "I've nearly died like five times since I got here! It's AMAZING!"
"How long— how long have you been here?" I ask him. Did he come through when I did? Before then? After? How did no one find him?
An alien comes charging at us, and Dagur turns and slams his sword into its neck with a loud battle cry. It falls to the ground at his feet and he smirks. "Ohh I've missed this!" He strokes his fingers along his blade, then sheaths his sword with a crazed glint in his eye.
"Dagur," I say. "How long have you been here?" Had people seen him?
"A few hours, quit worrying about it." He waves me off and roles his eyes, looking around the battlefield. "Not the same thing I can say for you."
"Well, no— no I've been here for a few days." I stammer. It's not like it's been in my control. He turns and regards me with a disbelieving frown.
"A few days?! Really Hiccup?!"
I tilt my head. "What's that supposed to— where are you going?"
He runs off before I can even finish my sentence, and I hurry to chase after him. "Over here, brother!" He laughs, and launches himself at a small alien climbing over a chunk of rubble laying on a wheeled contrition. He full on tackles it off the rubble and onto the ground below, wrestling to keep it below him. "Now, Hiccup!" He looks up at me, letting off his infamous laugh. "Strike it!"
"Uhh..." I look at the alien struggling in his arms. This one is the smallest I've seen, about the size of a lamb. I swallow nervously, hesitant.
"Whoa!" Dagur barely dodges it's horns, "You're a tough guy, eh?" He continues in his efforts to hold it down. I see the alien swing it's head at him again, and this time I don't hesitate. I run forward and slash at it's throat. It drops dead, the horns barely missing Dagur's face. He's then able to get off it and stand up.
I breathe heavily, shaking my head to try and shake off the feeling in my gut. I am not cut out for this. I can not just go around killing creatures. It's against what I stand for.
Dagur launches himself onto a really low flying robot, hacking at it with his sword until it crashes to the ground.
But I know that I don't have a choice; whether I fight or not could be the difference between Toothless and I going home or not—and now it's not just us, it's Dagur too.
I ready my sword, rolling my shoulders and looking around for a target. I spot an alien approaching, and I raise my shield at the ready. Once it's close enough, I give it a hard hit with the shield to the head, the crack sound of it's skull—or skeleton, or whatever makes up its body— reverberating in my head as I hit it once more for good measure, and raise my sword in defence, though it drops to the ground motionless.
It would be selfish of me to stop fighting the aliens. Toothless is the ALPHA, dragons everywhere need him. Dagur is the chief of the Berserkers, his people need him— not to mention Mala! And my people need me. Or rather I need them.
The battle continues, and I regroup with Toothless a few minutes later when he saves Spider-man. He seems to have warmed up to him a bit more, since up until now he'd been very guarded around him and just didn't seem to trust him. I'm glad to see that's changed; I believe Spider-Man is trustworthy.
"Yes bud!" I cheer as we fly through the air once again, the heat from the explosion he just caused rising up at us as we fly overhead. We take a sharp right, and we're both too late to spot the group of flying robots barrelling towards us, causing Toothless to stop short in the sky to barely avoid hitting them. I clutch on tight to the saddlebars to stop myself from falling off, the movement violently jolting my body and causing me to suppress a groan. That was not fun. I silently curse not stripping myself in and fix the mistake quickly, not wanting to be thrown from the saddle just yet. The robots stabilise themselves and turn back towards them, but a quick plasma blast sends them tumbling to the ground in flames.
"Whew." I exhale as Toothless shakes his head and starts moving again. "That was a close one, eh bud?!"
He warbles in agreement, looking back at me with concern. I wave him off with a calm, "I'm fine, bud." And hope he buys it.
He doesn't have time to judge me, because not far from us an explosion of light hits a building, drawing our attention. A group of robots had managed to collide with it, making the structure unstable. "Is anyone up there?" I ask Toothless urgently, seeing the building starting to crumble.
Without warning Toothless launches us through the air towards the building, angling down towards the bottom of it. "Whoa!" I exclaim, adjusting to the new position and quickly flicking the tail to make us more aerodynamic. I peer over his head just as a scream rips through the air, seeing the female archer falling through the sky terrified. Toothless speeds up, the Night Fury whistle cuts through the sky around us, and catches up with her. We then make a sharp change in direction, barely missing smaller buildings' rooftops, and head for higher altitude.
"Did you catch her?" I yell over the wind. A scream from directly below answers my question, and I lean over to see Kate, I believe her name is, clutching Toothless' paws tightly as he holds her. "Good job, bud!" I cheer.
I then see a robot about to fire at us and scream for Kate to hang on, directing Toothless to barrel role and avoid the projectiles. He does so, with Kate letting out an "Oh my GOD what is happening?!", and we successfully avoid them. I reach a hand down towards Kate.
"You can't stay down there!" I urge her. "You'll fall if you do." She looks up at me, obviously frightened, but reaches up towards me with one arm. I grab her wrist, she grabs mine, and Toothless twists in the air, throwing her up towards me. I pull her into the saddle behind me as he levels out again. "Hang on tight!" I exclaim cheerfully.
"Oh my god oh my god oh my god." She mutters, hanging on for dear life. We continue through the battlefield, Toothless firing down plasma blasts to the battle. We don't bother with lightning, not wanting to mess with it when Kate isn't immune.
"You ok back there?" I ask her as we swoop down low towards the ground, and Toothless plucks an alien up.
"Yeah! If I can grab my bow from my back I can start firing!" She responds, breathless. We fly up again and Toothless flings the alien through the air, sending it crashing into a building then onto the ground. We level off and I look over my shoulder to nod at Kate, who releases her vice grip and grabs her bow from her back. She nocks an arrow and nods at me, now gripping the saddle with just her legs, as she needs both arms for the weapon. I turn back around and see Spider-man fighting off some enemies, but he doesn't notice the aliens nearing him. I hope she's got a strong grip with those legs, because we're not going to stay still.
Toothless takes us closer, just sticking to a glide for now. Once we get above the aliens an arrow flies over my shoulder and strikes an alien dead. "Yes!" Kate cheers. "That was such a good shot. Clint's not gonna beat that."
"Aww come on!" I hear his voice in coms.
"Are you having a competition? In the middle of battle?" I ask her, baffled but amused.
"Yep! So far it's 19–17–Clints favour. For now."
"That's gotta be at LEAST three points to me!" She exclaims over the coms, to which Clint argues with her and protests it to be only two points. Toothless fires a few plasma blasts down onto the battle, blowing up a wheeled contraption to take down a few aliens, and striking a heap of robots. Kate fires another few arrows and she argues, taking down a few more aliens.
"Did you see the distance? Three for sure!"
"Well if that's a three then my reverse window shot was a four!" Comes Clint's response.
"No! That was definitely not a four!" She then hesitates. "That was... that was actually like a five if I'm being honest. That was a good one."
"Yeahhh!" Clint laughs. "I was being nice by taking it as a three."
"Still. My shot was definitely three."
"Whatever."
We fly around the sky for a few minutes, before touching down on a high buildings rooftop and letting Kate off. "Whew. My legs feel like jello." She stumbles slightly. I chuckle, remembering how crazy it had felt for me when we first started flying.
"Thanks for the save, by the way." She adds, slouched with her hands on her knees as she breathes heavily. "I think in all the life flashing before my eyes I forgot to say thanks."
"You're welcome! Try not to fall off any more buildings." I wave her off cheerfully. Toothless spreads his wings and we take to the sky, flying away and leaving her on the rooftop with her bow and arrows as we return to the battle once again.
Meanwhile, across the city
The lights flicker on and off inside an old building that shakes every few seconds as the ground rumbles and things collide with the outer walls. Furniture litters the concrete floor, jolting with every boom coming from the battle. A figure moves across the room, grunting when the lights go out completely and they stub their toe on something unknown.
They pass an open window and they pause to examine the damage done to their foot in the natural light. A robot from the battle crashes onto the the ground outside the building, it's mechanical parts whirling as it rights itself, and looks right in the window. The figure has yet to notice, whining in pain dramatically.
The robot launches itself through the window, intending to tackle the individual, but the figure's shirt gets gripped and they get tugged to the ground in the last second, the robot barrelling overhead and into an upturned wooden table.
"That would have been a cool death," the person exclaims, upset.
"Yeah, well, we're going out together! Don't think I'm letting you have all the fun." Another voice exclaims. Two growls follow, and the first figure rolls his eyes as he stands up from the ground.
"Yeah, yeah." He grumbles, straightening one of the golden horns branching out of the eyebrow lines of his green helmet. As he turns and talks to his companion, a winged creature bounds over to trample the robot until it stops moving. "But I still think I'm going to get the best death, I'm the cooler twin after all."
"Ha! In your dreams!"
"Everyone knows that—" a growl interrupts Tuffnut and he looks over at Barf and Belch dramatically. "Let a guy speak!"
"Come on, we should keep moving." Ruffnut gives in. "We still need to get to the battle and find them."
"Yeah, Yeah." Tuffnut rolls his eyes and they start to walk through the building again, shadowed by their dragon. "It's not my fault he rides the fastest dragon in existence and leaves every place before we can get his attention."
And there we go! The moment everyone has been waiting for!
Also sorry if there's any errors. I haven't really edited the last half of the chapter lol
See you next chapter, with Peter!
