Chapter 32: A New Ally on the Field (Peter)
Previously:
Everyone headed out to begin a battle with the invading robots and aliens, being joined by Rhodey, Steve and Bucky out there. The extra help is appreciated because they're severely outnumbered against the invaders. The storm has stopped but it has left hundreds of thousands of robots and aliens flooding the streets and buildings.
Refer to the last chapter for Hiccup's recollection of the recent events
Now:
I barely hear the sound at first, being distracted by the surplus of robots that have surrounded me once again. Piling up on me like a more dangerous version of a dog pile. I don't really pay the sound any attention; I'd rather focus on keeping up with the robots' blows, bullets and spikes all aimed for me. Besides, at first I think that it's just the wind, or my imagination! But it grows loud enough to draw my attention and I can't logically pass it off as one of those things, so I look up.
All I see is a dark blur overhead emit a purple glow that arrows down through the air to strike a heap of the robots on the very top. The force of the blast knocks me back but doesn't harm me and I manage to regain my balance. I look at the robots, seeing the majority of them a twisted, burning mess of hot red metal. Warily, I look up. Whoa.
"What the hell was that?!" I hear Bucky shout. He'd only been a hundred meters or so from me.
"Looks like someone decided to disobey us." Natasha remarks, the calm tone in her voice suggesting she's not surprised.
"DID YOU SEE THAT?!" I shout into coms, unable to hold back my excitement and practically jumping up and down. My eyes follow the shape in the sky, seeing Hiccup tucked smugly into Toothless' saddle as they soar high overhead and perform a smooth turn. "IT WAS SO COOL, MR STARK!"
"Looks like bodily function is proving useful after all!" Comes Mr Stark's response, accompanied by the sounds of his repulsors.
"Hey everyone, don't shoot the guy on the black dragon, he's on our side!" I inform the coms, not wanting anyone who hadn't seen what just happened to think they're the enemy. "He's Hiccup...the dragon's name is Toothless, by the way." I make a vague introduction, not being sure if everyone had met him yet.
"Yeah, copy." Comes Clint's response. "Totally could have downed them with one arrow."
"I would've bet you to it," Kate retorts playfully.
"You wish."
I return to the battle, running away from the burning robots and singling out an alien trying to climb over a news van. What's the news doing so close?! I leap forward and fire a web, pulling the van out from under the alien. "Get out of here! Are you crazy?!" I shout at the people as I wrench open the sliding door. They chuckle guiltily, climbing out of their seats and running away. For people who are supposed to inform the public of how to keep safe, they're not setting a great example.
I go to pull open the driver's door, but the alien has caught up. I duck, the alien slamming so hard into the van it leaves a dent. I'm hoping no one got hurt. I kick the alien in its neck and then drag its head to my knee, landing a hard hit. It shakes its head, disorientated. I pull the door right off the van, relieved to see that the driver is okay, "Go, go! I got you!" I urge her. She swallows her fear and nods, scrambling out of the passengers side and booking it. I hold the door tightly and slam it into the alien's stomach. Smelly yellow juice flows out of the wound and I gag, ending the alien with a quick door-blow to the head.
"Guys, any idea where Thor is yet? Could have sworn he was around this morning." Rhodey asks. I walk away from the alien and web a robot to the ground. I've noticed that a few of the robots can fly, they have rockets that expand from their backs. But there's not too many of them— at least so far. I'm assuming that some robots are hiding their flight ability, or they're not all in working condition. Perhaps the robots aren't all from the same reality? Or different companies?
"Off planet," Dr Strange responds. Two robots start attacking me and I punch one in the face then shove it on top of the other as it tries to spike me. The spike impales the other and I cheer, watching them try to break apart from each other to no avail.
"Damn. We could use his help, huh." Rhodey sighs.
"You can't, like, portal him in?" Kate asks. I pause. That's a good point.
"No." Dr Strange responds. We wait to here why, but he doesn't tell us.
"...why not?" I ask curiously, before tackling an alien to the ground. "Sir."
"I'm busy trying to sort out all this, in case you haven't noticed!" He snaps.
"Oh, okay. Sorry, sir. You're right!"
"Now look what you've done, sparkles. You've upset the kid!" Mr Stark exclaims.
"I'm not—"
"You should apologise, Stephen." Natasha talks over me.
"Yeah, that was kind of mean." Yelena adds.
"Guys I don't—"
"Whatever! I'm... sorry." Dr Strange huffs. Wow that sounded hard to say. I'm kind of proud of him!
"Oh don't worry about it Dr Strange sir, it didn't really upset me." I beam, shooting webs to swing myself across the battlefield. It's a high stress situation, anyway. Can't expect everyone to keep their cool like me 😎.
"There is a civilian trapped under the blue car up ahead," Karen advises me and I look for it. Catching sight of the car, I swing down and land with a thud next to it.
"Are you okay?" I ask, crouching down. It's a teenager, they seem about fourteen. "Are you hurt?"
"Ooh yeah man, I'm good. Just another Tuesday." They grin. Ain't that the truth.
I carefully lift the car off them, listening to Karen's instructions to avoid injury. "Well, it's not a Tuesday. But still." They add, crawling out of the way so I can lower the car back down.
"What is the day?" I wonder out loud, helping them stand up. Who knows. I escort them to the safety of a sturdy looking building. "Anyway, stay here until it's safe. Try and stay out of view and don't make any noises."
"Will do, thank you for helping!"
"Oh, it's what I'm here for." I smile, walking out of the building. "It's what I do every Tuesday."
The last thing I hear as I swing away is their chuckle. I guess I now have a random inside joke with that random teen. I'm totally gonna slip it into interviews.
I pick up a discarded street sign and slam it into a robots chest, before using the momentum to propel myself up and jump onto the side of a building. Climbing up to get a good view of the battle and where I should go, I catch sight of Hiccup and Toothless flying nearby. I watch as the dragon fires one of those cool purple blasts at a group of aliens, then barrel roles to avoid a spray of bullets, and fires another blast at a heap of robots. Some of those robots are sent quite high in the air from the force and I whistle, impressed.
My spider sense goes off and I look for the source, just to see a car, thrown up into the air by the Hulk (he'd been aiming for a swarm of aliens climbing over a hotdog stand but missed. Might have to work on his aim), hit a building and burst into an explosion of fire right in front of Hiccup and Toothless' path. My eyes widen and I swing closer, opening my mouth to warn them to dodge because neither Hiccup nor the dragon are focused on the direction they're headed. But by the time I'm close enough they've already gone through the flames. I land on another building's roof, surprised to see that they're both completely fine. Hiccup sees me and pulls Toothless back to hover (fairly smoothly in the air for something that size) close by.
"What?" He chuckles, sitting up and flicking up the visor of his helmet to give me a teasing smirk. "You didn't think a dragon would be fire proof?"
"I totally thought you were gonna die!" I laugh, sheepish. "That was about to be very traumatic." In that moment a projectile flies up towards Hiccup but he has a shield on his arm and uses it to block it— without even looking, might I add. I'm starting to think this guy has a tingle like me. Because c'mon, that's not normal.
"I tend to get that reaction," Hiccup grins. "I blame my dramatic flair!" He flicks his helmet back down and pulls Toothless into a sideways dive. I look down as they flip over just above the ground and grab a robot. Toothless flings it into the air. "Hey! You learnt that from her!" I hear Hiccup exclaim teasingly as they fly off. Yeah, I can definitely see that 'dramatic flair'.
It's some time later and I'm currently fighting a robot not far from Wanda, who I will note is using her powers like a fricken badass. I throw the robot I'm fighting off me and turn to see Wanda use her powers to literally tear a robot apart and then explode another. So cool. I finish mine with a few well placed kicks to the head and chest cavity. "Nice hit, Spider-man!" Wanda compliments me.
"Thanks! Though the last one threw me off-balance!" I respond cheerfully, climbing halfway up the building wall I'm standing near and flipping off it to land on top of another robot. I pull its spike out and use it to hack the robot into vague parts.
Movement overhead catches my attention and I look up, just in time to see Hiccup LAUNCH himself from the saddle and RIP THE WIRES OUT OF A PASSING FLYING ROBOT! I'm about to, I don't know, go and catch him so he doesn't plummet to death with the robot, but he slips his arms through loops in his legs and when he spreads them, he's got black wings! His armour is part gliding suit! How cool is that?!
Beaming in excitement, I jump off the roof and spread my own webbed wings, floating down after Hiccup. I watch him land on the ground and use his shield to block a blow from an alien and then trip it over with his leg. Grinning, I land on top of the alien and web it down then turn to Hiccup.
"Dude that was so cool!" I grin, "Those wings are amazing!"
"Thanks!" He responds, slightly out of breath as he tucks his wings back in. "Yours are cool too, it looks... amazingly light!"
I look down at them, nodding in agreement, I always feel like those baby spiders in charlottes web when I use them; floating through the air on webs.
I look around for the dragon and am unable to spot him. I know he can't fly on his own. "Hey, where did Toothless go?"
"Oh, he'd be around somewhere. He can certainly hold his own in a fight so I don't need to worry too much about him." Hiccup waves me off, glancing around us.
I shrug, it does seem like he'd be fairly good on his own considering he can breathe fire and all. "Fair enough!"
And there we go! Hope you enjoyed this one! I'll tell you what, I did NOT enjoy sitting in that cursed "lounge" trying to get Eras Tour Tickets. I felt my will to live deplete with every 10 seconds. If you can't tell, I despite Ticketek and did not get any tickets 🥲
See you next chapter with Hiccup's POV.
