Chapter 26: A quick patrol (Peter)

Previously:

Peter attended a meeting with most of the Avengers and a few extras regarding the storms. They have all elected to stay close and prepared, warning the public to stay indoors and out of trouble.

A nice quick chapter for us.

Now!

After dinner I decide it's about time I head out for patrol. I figure I should let Mr Stark know I'm going, just in case they need me. May is staying in the spare room next to mine. She's been on a phone call for the last two hours, to do with her work, so I'm just leaving her be.

"Hey Mr Stark," I call as I stick my head out of my bedroom donned in my suit except for the mask. "I'm gonna go out on patrol."

He sticks his head into view, an iron man helmet in hand. "You're not going unless you promise to call at the first glimpse of something— anything weird!" He warns, pointing at me. "Especially with your aunt here, I don't wanna be subjected to murder today."

"I will, Mr Stark!" I assure him. "I'll call if anything weird happens."

"You better," he waves me off. "Or, I'll... only let your suit fire confetti." He has a nonchalant tone but I know he's serious.

I put my hands up in mock defence. "I promise I will!" I assure him.

He doesn't say anything, giving a small nod as he walks off, fiddling with the helmet. I hear him tell Friday to fire up the lab which doesn't surprise me. I head back into my room and pull my phone out. I send a quick text to May, letting her know to ask Friday if she needs anything because I'm heading out for a while. Then I put it on charge and slip my mask on.

"Good Evening, Peter." Karen greets me as I slide open my window.

"Hey Karen," I greet back with a grin as I climb out and close the window behind me. I turn and jump, plummeting down towards the ground with a loud whoop of joy, before I fire a web and swing off towards Queens.

"Karen, call Ned." I order a few minutes later as I perch on a building's roof. I look around. It's dark, of course, but there's still a few people about despite Mr Stark's warning. Less than usual, but there's still people. Which means that there's still crime.
"Calling 'Guy in the Chair'."

He picks up after the first ring. "Hey, Peter!" He answers enthusiastically. "You need your Guy in the Chair?"

"Yep, if you're not busy!" I respond, still scanning the surroundings. I know that I could just use Karen, and sometimes I do, but it's nice to have a real person to talk to. Ned is smart, he's good at what he does and he's my best friend so why wouldn't I want to have him as my guy?!

"You've cured my boredom," he laughs. I hear typing. "Okay, I'm connected to your suit." Which means he can see my vitals, the suits vitals, and he can see and hear what I do. "Also synced into the police radio. We're good to go!"

"Awesome!" I grin. Just as I speak, a car siren goes off in the distance. "Ooh, looks like we've got action!" I take off towards it. When I get there, I see a man in a hood holding a crow bar standing next to a silver car with a smashed window. I land in front of him with a thud. "Huh. Looks like you're really revved up, dude! So tense!" I laugh. He glares at me.

"This has nothin' to do with you, go do your Spidey thing somewhere else." He snarls.

I put my foot on the car and lean on it casually. "Nah, I kinda wanna do my Spidey thing here."

He grips the crowbar tighter. "Fine." He growls. He charges forward and swings it towards me, but my spider sense goes off and I dodge it easily. It slams into the windshield, cracking it.

"Aww, man, you're gonna have to pay for that dude!" I point at it with a grin. He just spits a swear word or two at me and attacks again. This time I dodge under the crowbar, catch his punch with my hand, and kick him back.

"Ooh, good hit!" Ned exclaims as the man falls down onto the pavement. I fire a web at his free hand, pinning it down, and lean down and snatch the crowbar with ease. I web his other hand down too, leaving him on his back and glaring up at me.

"Sorry, man, you picked a bad night to do crime." I exclaim, not sorry, as I lay the crowbar on top of the car hood.
"You wait until I get out of this," he threats, trying to pull out of the webs to no avail.
"Yeah they're not going away any time soon," I tell him. "Sit tight."

I aim my web shooters towards a building across the street.
"You're just leaving me here?!" He shouts.

"Yep." I swing off.

"Yess, good job Peter! The cops are... five minutes out."

"Thanks Ned," I smile. "Karen, go ahead and send the footage to the cops so they know what went on."
"Already done, Peter." She confirms. I nod in approval. Don't worry, we never include footage of my face or anything, it's only what the suit sees.

About a half hour passes of patrol, nothing much goes down apart from escorting a few teens home, helping a man who dropped his shopping, and calming down a barking dog. He was such a cute dog. Ned and I spend any spare time going over decathlon questions and talking about whatever else came up.

"There's reports of a disturbance coming from a few blocks away," Ned tells me as I'm swinging through the city, doing flips and tricks. "Some damage being done to a window or something."

"Ooh, okay," I exclaim. "Where?"

"To your left, three blocks over."

"I've highlighted a path," Karen informs me. I follow said path and soon find a man standing in front of a vending machine, trying to pry open the door. By the looks of it he's pretty rough and his clothes are tattered, I'm thinking he's homeless or somewhere close to it. Either way, I understand why he's trying to break in. In the corner of my eye I see a woman from inside a nearby building, holding a phone and eyeing the man. It's safe to assume she was the one that called the cops.

"Hey, dude." I call calmly as I swing up and drop down next to the man. He flinches and puts his hands up, eyes wide.

"I-I, I'm sorry, S-spider-man I wasn't trying to cause trouble..." he stutters. "I'm just, I'm just hungry man."
"This dude's harmless," Ned observes.
"Hey, it's okay dude, it's fine." I tell him assuredly. "Hang on, uh, I'll be right back!"

I swing myself into an alley and take my suit off momentarily, patting myself down until I find my wallet in the shorts I'm wearing underneath. I grab a few dollars out, put my suit back on, and swing back into view. The man is still there, running his hands over his head as he paces stressfully.

I land next to him again. "Hey, dude. Don't worry about it." I tell him, trying to ease his worries. "This is what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna buy you a few snacks, and you're going to promise not to break into things."

He nods, shaking. "O-okay, that-that sounds good."

I slip the dollars in and let him select the ones he wants. After that, I pat him on the shoulder. "I don't wanna assume, man, but... there's a homeless shelter about five blocks that way. Just don't go past the pet store or you've gone too far."
"It's next to the laundromat, my uncle volunteered there a few years back." Ned tells me.
"It's next to the laundromat." I add.

The man swallows, still nervous, but he gives me a small smile. "I was kicked out of my buddies place again yesterday, spent last night in a park. Been sofa surfing the last two weeks. With everything happening I didn't think to check shelters..."

"I get it, you're going through a tough time! It's fine to forget things. "I soothe, "Don't worry man, things are gonna start looking up. They'll help. Just remember, don't break into things, and try to get to safety cause it's not safe out, especially with everything that's happened recently."

"Okay, Spider-Man. Thank you." He mumbles. I give him a pat on the shoulder, point out the direction of the homeless shelter, then swing off. I like to think that I'm helping people, especially people that low, but it doesn't mean I don't worry about them.

A few minutes later I pass the homeless shelter and see him through the window, talking to a worker with a cup of coffee in his hands. I smile, happy that's he's in the best place he could be right now. Nothing else happens in the next hour or so, so I end up flipping through the city as Ned and I talk about the newest Star Wars movie coming out.

"I'm telling you, man! It's gonna be the best one yet."

I smile, letting out a whoop as I do a front flip mid air, shoot another web, and surge through the air. "We'll see if it lives up to your expectations next week."

We discuss the movie for a few more minutes, both of us excited. I'm a little sceptical that it won't be too great, due to a different director, but I don't wanna go into it with a negative opinion already.

"What's the time, by the way?" I ask. I'm heading towards New York, taking my time to remind anyone I see to try to get indoors to safety.

"It's 9:53," Karen and Ned answer in sync. I chuckle in amusement at that.

"Okay, that's not too bad! I'm going to end the patrol early tonight, I don't want May to worry too much." I explain as I swing towards the tower. I won't be there for a while yet.

"That's fair," Ned agrees. "Besides, the Avengers are doing some patrols too, right?"

"Yeah, we want at least one of us to be near if anything happens." I respond.

A moment later I hear something move somewhere to my right. I let go of my web and land on a lamp, looking back to see nothing but a bush rustling on a nature strip. "Did you guys hear that?" I ask, to both Ned and Karen.
"Nah, man." Ned replies. "I didn't hear anything come through on my end."
"My sensors picked up a small sound, my hypothesis is a small animal or rodent." Karen adds.
I stay for a few more seconds, watching the bush, but it doesn't move again. It may have been the wind. "I think I'm just paranoid." I chuckle awkwardly, rubbing my neck, and swing off. My spider sense didn't alert to danger, so whatever it is it's harmless.

A few minutes later I reach the tower, "alright, I'm gonna let you go now, Ned."
"Okay dude, see ya later."
"Bye. End call," I start climbing the tower.
"Call ended,"

Soon enough, I reach my window. Friday opens it automatically and I slip into my room. "Whew,' I exhale, pulling my mask off.

"Welcome back, Mr Stark has been informed of your return and Mr Barton is leaving for patrol. How was your patrol, Peter?" Friday greets me warmly.

"Pretty good, thanks Fri! Nothing much happened, it's quiet out." I chirp back cheerfully, taking my suit off and heading towards the shower with a change of clothes. Sure, nothing happened on patrol, but I did do a lot more tricks. It's a good thing for my super healing, or my wounds from the other patrols would still be painful.

After a quick shower, I head to the kitchen to grab a snack. It's empty, which may become rare with everyone now in the building. I grab a banana cause why not, have a glass of water, then return to my room. I wanna have a call with MJ.

*** time skip brought to you by Peter staring at MJ in one of those typical love heart cliches as they talk ***

"Alright, bye MJ!"
"See ya, loser."

I wave and we hang up. I flop back on my bed with a smile (yes, I have regular bed in here too as well as the web hammock). That was a really nice chat. It's somewhere around twelve now, so we spent a good hour or so just talking. Sure she insulted me for a goof fifth of that time, but you know what she's like. Her nicknames are affectionate.

Still smiling, I log onto the Avenger's offical StarkBook account, posting a photo I'd taken earlier on patrol. It's great that I'm the most trusted to use this. A weird decision, though. Especially because I post a lot of memes and vine references. The public doesn't know who runs it. Yet.

The interactions quickly role in as a few minutes pass. I decide to log onto my Spider-Man offical and reply to a few comments for fun.

Aaand there we go! I went a little overboard at the end there but whatever. You can tell that I love writing about patrols cause this is like the third of the book. I'd write about them in every chapter if I could. At least he didn't get hurt this time.

See you next update, with, can you guess it?

Hiccup!

Okay, bye. As I write this multiverse of madness comes out in like two days I'm so excited!!! Scared, yes. Still not over nwh, also yes. But excited, yesss.
(A late edition: Damn that was ages ago 💀)
