Chapter 24: They'll need to try harder than that to know my identity (Peter)
Previously
Dr Strange came to talk about the storms popping up, had a passive aggressive argument with Tony, and then left to try and see what information he could dig up on everything. Meanwhile Peter would go with Hiccup and Tony as they try to find people.
Refer to the last chapter for Hiccup's recollection of the recent events
Now:
"...And I saw on Starkbook that Abe's trampoline blew threw a fence, which has gotta suck."
"Oh, for sure. Who knew a storm could do so much damage in, what, two minutes?!" I respond. I'm on a FaceTime with MJ, we just wanted to make sure we were both safe with all of the storms going on (we're not clingy. You're clingy), and I wanted something to do while I wait for the meeting to be called— assuming I'll even be allowed to come.
"It's so weird," she agrees. "Do you think there will be more?"
"More storms? I don't know," I respond with a frown, "I hope not! Uh, just in case, stay indoors. You don't wanna get blown away!"
"I'm more worried about YOU getting blown away tiny," she smirks and I chuckle, shaking my head at her. "But yeah. I guess I'll stay safe so you don't have a heart attack."
I smile at her, "Good!" I don't like to think about what would happen if I would lose her. "So, how's—"
"Sorry to interrupt, mr Parker, but the meeting is about to proceed." Friday interrupts. "Your presence is requested."
I look up at the ceiling and give a thumbs up, "sure Fri, I'll be right down."
"Gotta go?" MJ asks.
I nod. "Yeah, don't want to keep them waiting. I'll try and keep you updated."
"You better." She narrows her eyes at me, but smiles to show me she's not mad. "Bye."
She hangs up before I can respond. I stand up from my web hammock and toss my phone onto charge as I head out the door, slipping my mask on. I head to the waiting elevator, not having to tell Friday where I need to go because she already knows.
I wonder if everyone was able to come, I ponder as the doors open to the conference floor, which is a few levels below the Avengers shared living quarters and consists of two large meeting rooms and a small waiting area. This is where most meetings with Lawyers and things take place, I believe.
I step out and walk down the hall, feeling a little nervous about the meeting. I mean, c'mon, it's the Avengers! I don't think I can ever not be nervous. I see the door to Meeting Room A is open, so I know that's where everyone is— and I can hear everyone. Okay, it's just a meeting. You don't need to impress anyone. You got this. I take a moment to calm myself down before taking a confident stance and walk in.
"Hey everyone!" I beam, waving. A few greetings float back to me as I look around the room. Mr Fury is standing at the head of the table, most likely waiting for everyone to pay attention to him. Everyone else is scattered around the room, talking in groups. By everyone, I mean Mr Stark, Miss Potts, Natasha, Clint (and a woman I've never met), Yelena, Wanda, Sam, Bucky, Dr Banner, Steve, Dr Strange, Vision, and Rhodey. Vision is alive??! SINCE WHEN?! WHAT IS GOING ON?!
"Heyyy, is that a new suit Mr Hawkeye? I'm liking the purple, It's cool!" I beam, giving finger guns.
He waves me off, "Yeah, yeah. It's not terrible."
"I told you, it was the branding!" The woman insists. I note that she's wearing the same shade of purple as Clint. "You were hopeless without me."
Clint scoffs, "I was fine."
"So, uh, who are you? If you don't mind me asking." I ask the woman, curious.
"I'm Kate, his new bestie,"
I kind of thought Natasha was his bestie? Guess you can never have too many.
Clint roles his eyes, but I can tell he's not really against the idea. "She's also Hawkeye."
"Ooh another Hawkeye?! so cool!" I beam, giving a thumbs up. Kate smiles, before she looks over my shoulder and her eyes widen.
"You!" She exclaims, sounding angry, I look to see her glaring at Yelena, who notices her and gives a rather cheerful wave despite the atmosphere. Read the room, Yelena.
"Hello, Kate Bishop!"
"You think you can—you can just greet me after you broke into my apartment?!"
"Enough," Nick Fury's voice cuts above the chatter and the room falls silence rather reluctantly. "Let's get this over with."
We all move to take seats around the large table. I end up sitting with Rhodey on my left, Vison on my right, and Steve across from me.
"How are you alive?" I whisper to Vision. "It's great to have you back, Sir, but I'm so confused!" I beam.
Unfortunately I don't get an answer, because Steve speaks up.
"So we all know why we've been called here," Steve begins. "The storms that just occurred are the same type of storms that brought beings from another universe here."
"Which means," Mr Fury jumps in from his standing position, "that there's a possibility more people and creatures are coming, or are already here."
"And they could be here to attack us," Kate pipes up, but when all our heads turn to her she smiles sheepishly, "...is what you were probably about to tell us anyway."
"Anyway," Mr Fury continues, "we don't knows if anything will happen at all, but we need to stay vigilant."
"They could come from any universe," Dr Strange adds, "there's no reason why they would come from the same universe as the first incident. We could be dealing with anything, there could be tears through all of the multiverse for all we know."
"What—What's causing this?" Dr Banner asks.
"We don't know," Mr fury responds.
"But I believe we could be dealing with someone," Dr Strange explains, " Someone may have caused this,"
"Who? Who could be capable of this?" Miss Potts asks.
"I don't know," Dr Strange sighs. "I'm trying to look into it, but there isn't a lot on multiversal travel."
"And what about Thor? Would he know?" Natasha asks. Now that I think about it, he's not even here. He and Loki were here for training, so where did they go?
"Yeah, he's a god, right. Surely he has connections." Dr Banner adds.
"He's off planet. We have no way of contacting him," Mr Fury supplies. I wonder what he's doing?
A few minutes pass as we all try to come up with possibilities, but in the end we don't know who it could be because we've never dealt with something like this (the closest thing was Thanos but he's very dead). It's concerning, that someone could be this powerful. I thought we'd already fought our biggest enemy, but now I'm starting to think that I was wrong.
"So what can we do, in the meantime?" Rhodey asks. "I don't know about you but I don't want to wait around and do nothing."
"We set a warning for civilians to be inside as long as they can," Mr Stark suggests. "I'll put out a recording, or somethin'."
Pepper nods in agreement. "We'll sort it out. I'll contact some government officials."
"The less they know the better. Tell them if they have a problem, to talk to me." Mr Fury responds. The government is afraid of him so they'll probably comply with no questions asked.
"What else can we do?" Clint asks. It's silent for a second as we think. Then an idea pops in my head and I speak up.
"We up city patrols," I suggest. "I'm happy to patrol more, and widen my areas."
"Good idea, Spider-man." Steve agrees, "I say we try to have at least one of us patrolling at all times. We don't have to go around every city and suburb, but close enough that if anything happens we can get there fast."
"Even better if there's two people patrolling at once," Dr Banner adds, then frowns. "I'll have to sit them out, though."
"So we're sorted, we patrol until something happens— if it even does- , and tell the civilians to keep their asses inside." Mr Fury taps the table.
Sam slowly turns to look at Steve, "Steve, are you gonna tell him off?" He whispers.
Steve groans. "Shut up, Wilson. Who told you about that?"
Sam just snickers, high-fiving Natasha.
"Call it, cap." Mr Fury directs. Steve nods.
"Alright, dismissed." Steve announces.

I take a seat in the corner of the room, watching Mr Stark start the press conference— doing it online so he doesn't "have to deal with people", as he put it. Miss Potts is also here, glaring at Mr Stark off screen. She wants to keep him in line.
"Good evening, New York." He flashes his paparazzi grin. "I'm sure you're wondering why I've called this press conference. It's regarding the recent storms in New York and the surrounding areas. I won't be taking questions, so you can shut up in the comment section.
"So, I'm going to put it real easy for you. We strongly recommend that you stay indoors and out of the weather, as it's dangerous and irregular. We, being the Avengers and the government. We're working collectively with several parties to fix what's going on, it shouldn't take us long so don't be concerned. Just say indoors until we give the word."
He looks over to see Miss Potts gives an approving nod, and he smiles at her then looks back at the camera. "And if you have any complains direct it to Pepper Potts." He adds, speaking quickly, before he reaches forward and ends the live. Miss Potts roles her eyes.
"Alright," Mr Stark claps his hands as he walks away from the hologram and joins Miss Potts and I. "That should keep 'em off my back for a bit."
We have FRIDAY on high alert for any and all disturbances reported in the atmosphere, so all of us can be ready if we need to jump into action. Right now, Mr Rhodes is taking the first patrol, and he's going to have a look around in case something did come through in the storms earlier— but if SHIELD didn't find anything that I doubt he will. We decided to take around three hour patrols each (but given I already patrol, I don't know how long I'll stay out for).
"I'm thinking we should have you stay here, Kid, where it's safest and convenient." Mr Stark says.
It's a good idea, but May would be home by now, and I don't want to leave her alone. What if something happened and I wasn't there?! I'd never forgive myself.
I frown, "I'd like to, Mr Stark, but May—"
"I'll have Happy go and pick her up, if it makes you feel any better. She can stay here."
"We've got plenty of room," Miss Potts adds.
I pause, considering their words. It makes sense. And Stark Tower is pretty much the safest building in the city. "Alright, then. If she's okay with it."
"Hey Fri, get Happy to go pick up May." Mr Stark orders. "Tell him he can take the new McLaren if he wants to, I know he likes it."
"Yes, boss. Happy is... quickly...departing for the garage as we speak."
Mr Stark smirks. "I knew he liked that one."
"Come on, we better head to the kitchen before they burn the place down," Miss Potts sighs. We head to the elevator and head up to the Avenger's kitchen. When we arrive, the only people present are Steve, Bucky, Wanda and Vision.
"...And I didn't mean to do it, but It wasn't like they believed me!" Wanda is rambling as she cooks with the aid of her magic—which is holding up four bowls and mixing the contents (which is very cool, by the way). Vision is standing next to her, intently mixing a bowl.
"Oh, been there." Bucky nods. "Been there a lot."
"Right? It's so— Vision, you should add a little more paprika— exhausting." Wanda exclaims. She smiles at us as we enter. "Hey, guys. Hope you're hungry."
"You've... certainly got everything handled," Pepper awkwardly smiles, eyeing the floating bowls. Wanda shrugs happily in response, turning back to her cooking. I take a seat at the counter next to Steve.
"Hey Cap," I greet, easing myself into the comfy stool. "How's life?"
"Terrible," he yawns, "but I'm not allowed to complain because 'this is the 21st century and you're supposed to be setting an example'." He mocks.
"Oh, mood." I snort.
"I mean, have you seen the price of milk?! You'd think winning the war would mean we'd be paying less for shit."
I gasp dramatically, "wowww Mr language I thought you were better than that." He groans and I snicker, before continuing. "But also, I agree. Inflation is stupid. People are stupid. I had to pay five bucks for frozen peas the other day!" Peas that I pressed to my head after being roundhouse kicked by a hypo boxer gone crazy. A little mental breakdown seemed to be the cause. As far as I know he's getting the help he needs.
Cap gasps dramatically at my last sentence. "Five?!"
I nod solemnly. "Five."
"Why are you complaining anyway, Cap? I pay for everything round here." Mr Stark questions, walking through the magical kitchen to make himself a cup of coffee, but Wanda floats an already done one over to him.
"Hey, would you look at that!" Mr Stark grins, pointing at the coffee. "She understands me." He adds, taking the drink and looking at Miss Potts pointedly, who rolls her eyes and walks off muttering about caffeine overdoses and heart attacks.
"How's work, Spider-man?" Bucky asks, coming out of his conversation with Wanda. Oh my god he's speaking to me! Ahhhh WHAT DO I DO?! Ok play it cool you got this.
"Ohh, thanks for asking Mr Bucky sir!" I grin, not that he can see it. Obviously I can't admit that I don't, in fact, have a job because I'm a student, so I spin (heh) a lie. "It's not too bad, I'm getting top responses on my assignments." I've been getting 95-100% on most of my tests. "One of my colleagues tried to copy my idea but I called him out for it." Flash tried to copy my work but I deliberately wrote down the wrong answers and he got in trouble when he was like "but that's what Parker wrote!" so he had to redo it. "And they brought back better food in the cafe across the street." They brought back fry-days in the cafeteria.
"So what do you do?" Steve asks kindly.
"Well I can't tell you that, now can I?" I grin. Ah, yes. 'I'm a school student.' You'll take that well.
"Damn. Thought that was gonna get you." Bucky grumbles. I chuckle and tap the side of my head.

The elevator dings, and I perk up as the familiar voice of May can be heard. "...It's all in the spices, you see."...I'm pretty sure I can smell some type of meat.
I jump off my seat dramatically and turn around, jogging up to May happily, who'd been talking to Happy. "Hey, May!" I greet her cheerfully. She's holding a pot roast? Okay.
"She refused to leave it," Happy informs me, causing May to give a sheepish smile and shrug.
"Ooh, have you met Captain America yet? Cause he's just over there," I point to the kitchen, hoping she'll get the hint to not say my name. "Along with the Scarlet Witch, Vision and Mr Sargent Bucky Barnes White Wolf sir."
"That was like five titles." I hear Bucky mutter, amused. May gives me a thumbs up, telling me she understands.
"Six, if you count your last name, Mr Sargent Bucky Barnes White Wolf, sir!" I retort over my shoulder.
"Hello," May greets them all politely, but also a little nervous. She doesn't walk any further into the room.
"Hi!" Wanda smiles warmly, still cooking.
"You are?" Steve asks politely.
"I'm May, Spider-man's..." she looks at me and I shrug, telling her it's ok. "Aunt."
I mean, they think I have a family, so of course I'm capable of having an aunt in their eyes. As long as we don't give away anything personal, we should be fine.
"Nice to meet you," Steve smiles politely.
"Let's goo before they start harassing you!" I half joke. A few of them give off fake offended noises of protest as I drag May out of the kitchen.
I can hear them talking as we head down the hall to the elevator. I'm not sure if May can hear them, I'm assuming not.
"We could run her face through facial recognition," Bucky suggests. I frown as I press the button to summon the elevator. I didn't think of that!
"We could, but we're not." Pepper insists. I let out a small breath of relief at that, it's good to know she's respecting my wish to stay private.
"Sure, we're not!" Bucky again. A few seconds pass. The elevator arrives and we step in. "Don't give me that look, I wasn't being serious!"
The doors close and I let out another breath of relief as we ascend.

"... but I checked the oven every ten minutes, just to be sure it wouldn't burn." May explains proudly. We're seated on the floor of my room opposite each other, the roast in front of us as we share some of it.
"So, no fire department!" I joke. We laugh and she pretends to throw a potato at me.
A few seconds pass after our laughter dies down, then May sighs. The tension of the room changes quickly.
"Are you oka—"
"Should we be worried? About what's happening. We should be worried, right?" She rushes anxiously, cutting me off. I frown.
"I... I don't know, May." I respond after a beat. "We shouldn't let it worry us, but... we should stay on guard."
"Yeah, yeah. I just," she smiles, tears brimming at her eyes as she shakes her head and doesn't make eye contact, "With everything that's happened... I just don't want to lose you." She whispers.
"Hey, I'm not going anywhere!" I assure her. "And neither are you. It's just me and you." I promise.
"Just me and you." She smiles shakily, nodding. I lean over and give her a hug.
"I'm not letting some stupid storms tear us apart, May!" I mumble, holding her tightly. She tightens her grip.
"Neither am I. I Larb you,"
"I Larb you too."
I am so sorry.
I was just thinking of NWH as I was writing, as one does.
And then I was like Huh what was that thing they said to each other😏?
and then I was like Hmm what would happen if I... *types rapidly*
and like yeah. Now I'm trying not to cry. I was gonna go and put a content warning but then I was like, nah. I want points for shock factor.
Don't kill me
Like the Goblin killed May—
I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I'll go now. I'll see myself out.
Just like Peter saw himself out of the coffee shop—
*runs out*
