Chapter 16: Meat Cake (Peter)
Previously:
They brought Hiccup to the priority Medical Bay so he could get his side looked at, Peter reflected on his past experience there and Dr Strange showed up to try and figure out what happened. Spoiler alert: he has no clue.
Refer to the last chapter for Hiccup's recollection of the recent events!
Now:
I leave once we reach the guest room and head up to my room at the penthouse, busting to call MJ and Ned and tell them about everything. I burst into my room dramatically and jump onto the web hammock, taking off my mask and reaching over for my phone—which I'd left on charge.
The hammock had taken some trial and error to develop, because the first time I'd made it I forgot the webs dissolve and ended up face planting at 3 am, but luckily after a few hours in the lab I've managed to develop the solution! They now take a week to dissolve instead of two hours. Much more practical and super comfy, too. I still can't believe I have a room here, and at the Penthouse?! Past me would have laughed at the thought of living in Stark Tower. Well, sort of living.
I unplug my phone and start a FaceTime with Ned and MJ. They take mere seconds to pick up. Ned appears to be sitting on his bed, while MJ seems to be on her couch, her head buried in a book despite being on the call.
"Peter! You have to tell me— us— everything!" Ned beams excitedly. MJ hums, not looking up.
"Oh, you guys won't believe what happened!" I exclaim.
"Did you get stabbed again?" MJ sighs, her eyes not leaving her book. She's about halfway through by the looks of it.
"No—well, yes—but that's not the point."
"Shot?" Ned asks almost eagerly, visibly sitting up on his bed. I shake my head. Not this time!
"No, so you know that crazy storm?" I ask. "It was pretty bad for a few minutes."
"Yeah I saw that! Can't be normal, right? Or am I overthinking it?" Ned responds.
"Yeah!" I respond, then start to ramble. "Well I was patrolling near Central Park right, just keeping an eye out, when there was this—this really big lightning! Like, it was so bright dude. You won't believe what happened."
"Something caught on fire?" MJ asks, unimpressed.
"No, something fell out of the sky. But if that's not interesting enough I'll hang up—"
"Don't you dare!" She slams her book closed and stares at the screen, challengingly. I snicker, satisfied with her reaction.
"So...what happened?" Ned demands. "What was it?!"
"Well I couldn't see much at first, all I could see was like a large black shape. I shot a net web underneath because it didn't seem like the descent was slowing. I got closer, and you are not going to believe what I saw!"
"C'mon dude, don't give us a cliffhanger!" Ned exclaims, bouncing in his seat.
"Okay, so not only is there a weird man clad in dark armour who claims he's not from this earth but—."
"Wait, so... so you're telling me this could be, like, a multiverse thing?" MJ asks. "I didn't think that was real..."
"Yeah, Dr Strange thinks so," I nod. "But I'm not finished. There was a-a literal dragon with him! A DRAGON! can you believe it?!" I beam. MJ looks vaguely impressed, while Ned starts screaming.
"What?!" Ned screams, eyes wide. "That's—thats so cool! What does it look like?!"
"Oh it was so cool, very dark black scales! These—these green eyes that just glared at me. It's crazy!"
"Duuude!"
"Cause I thought it may be a time travel thing but Mr Stark was like 'there's no dragons in the past'," I mock Mr Stark's voice then continue on, "and so I thought well maybe they're from the future but then Hiccup, he's the guy by the way, said that he's never even heard of the Avengers! We didn't believe that, we thought he was here to like attack us or something cause he was all mysterious and threatening like "Why did you shoot us down!" which obviously we didn't. But then he said he's heard of Thor so we thought he knew Thor, but turns out he hasn't cause he thinks he'd be dead if he was meeting Thor, so boy does he have a surprise in store if he ever meets him!" I ramble. Ned gets more excited as I go on, and even MJ looks interested.
"Duuude!" Ned exclaims.
"Ooh, I should show you guys some of the footage!" They both perk up when I mention that so I pull my mask on and speak to Karen.
"Karen?" I speak out loud. "Can you show the footage of first seeing Hiccup and sync to my phone?"
"Certainly. I must advise you to be careful as it is confidential footage."
"It's just Ned and MJ, it's fine." I wave her off. I pull my mask off and the footage pops up on the call screen. I let the scene play on for about fifteen seconds before I tell Karen to pause it, and we resume our discussion.
"Dude he had a fire sword!" Ned gasps.
"That's... kind of cool." MJ admits. "His prosthetic leg is kinda weird."
"That's what I was thinking!" I exclaim, "I've never seen anything like it so I thought maybe it was time travel. Dr Strange thinks they're definitely from another universe but he doesn't know how to get them back yet."
"And he... rides the dragon?" MJ asks. I bet she's thinking of a book she's read or something.
"Yeah! Though he can't right now because the tail is broken. They got struck by lightning and apparently it destroyed the fake tail fin."
"Still cool," Ned mumbles.
"Yeah, and S.H.I.E.L.D was all up in our business about it, I think Nick Fury wanted to take control. Mr Stark wouldn't let him."
"I still can't believe he tranquillised me." Ned smiles. I don't think normal people would get excited about that.
"So how are you guys going to handle the media?" MJ asks. I shrug.
"They're so annoying, the choppers followed us to the tower. I guess there will be a press conference or something eventually but we don't know the details of everything yet so we're keeping it on the down low."
"Is it true that Tony sprayed the media crew with water? There's been a lot of talk online." MJ asks.
"Apparently so, Mr Stark said they were trying to climb the Quinjet."
"They're probably going to try and sue." Ned hums. I chuckle, good luck with that.
"So, anyway, have you guys done the calculus homework yet?" I ask.
They both shake their heads and we decide to do it together. I web my school bag to me and dig around in it, finally finding the homework.
"Can you believe the sub we had Wednesday?! So annoying." MJ groans a few minutes later.
"Oh, he was terrible!" Ned exclaims and I nod in agreement as I continue working on the equations. "Do you think we'll have him on Monday?"
"I hope not. My crisis sketchbook doesn't haven't the space for the whole glass." Mj mutters. "What did you get for question 6?"
"4X. You?" I ask.
"Yep, same." MJ nods. "Did you guys hear about that fight between Zach and Tyler?"
"I think so." Ned nods.
"The one by our geography room?" I check, she nods. "Yeah I let the guilt win and broke that one up. Did you get 54 for 7?"
"No, I got 36." Ned responds.
I look over my work again, confused, then facepalm when I realise what I did wrong. "I forgot to square the third step."
"Back to the fight. How? Did you get caught? Half the school was probably watching." MJ asks, surprised. I smirk.
"I turned the lights off in the hall and threw a basketball at them, it stunned them enough to stop and by the time the lights came back on I was long gone. They still don't know who did it."
"If I were you I would have just walked past, to be honest." MJ remarks.
"Yeah, but you know Pete. Can't walk away from a fight." Ned chuckles. I give a fake offended huff and we all chuckle.
"I really don't want to do the IP in physics," MJ groans. She doesn't have a class with us for that one, she says all her classmates suck. "I have to work with a partner to compare results."
"We had one last month, maybe you could compare ours?" Ned offers.
"Yeah! I've still got it, somewhere." I agree.
"I'll ask the teacher, she likes me so she might let it slip." MJ nods. "9Y 3X for 11?"
"Yeah, I got that." I give a thumbs up, already halfway through question fifteen. "Did you see the—"
"Miss Potts would like to inform you that dinner is ready." Friday interrupts.
"Okay, tell her I'll be there in a minute. Thanks Friday." I respond.
"I've gotta go, about to have dinner. Meat and spaghetti cake." I explain.
"Gotta love lasagna." MJ nods. "I gotta go, anyway. See you losers." She leaves the call. I chuckle and wave bye to Ned as we end the call. I finish the question I'm on before putting it on my desk with my phone on the way out the door.
When I make it to the kitchen both Mr Stark and Miss Potts are there, Mr Stark leaning on the counter annoying Pepper— likely telling some stupid joke— while she plates up.
"Tony," she groans as she roles her eyes. She walks past him to the table with plates in hand.
"Oh come on, it's funny!" He exclaims with a grin, taking the final plate and placing it down. "The highlight of my day."
"I thought I was the highlight of your day," Pepper teases as she sits down. "Not sending government officials to voicemail."
"Hey Mr Stark, hi Miss Potts!" I greet as I walk in and plop myself down in the spare seat with a grin, "Meat cake, my favourite!" I joke.
Mr Stark point his fork at me as he threatens me, "I will make you a therapy appointment." I just laugh in response. I will not refrain from making him uncomfortable with weird references and nicknames for things. After all, he technically does the same thing.
"You're eating in your suit?" Pepper observes, eyebrows raised. I shrug, mouthful of (delicious!) food. I can't be bothered changing out of it. That and the stab wound probably won't sell well (it's better, if you were wondering. I changed the bandages in my room).
"So tell me, is there anything you'd like to talk about... perhaps something that happened on patrol today?" Mr Stark begins. Oh, no! Does he know? "Y'know, anything just stabbing at the back of your mind?" I think he knows. He looks at me expectantly. What do I say?
"...No?" I hesitate.
"Really, cause this would say otherwise..." Mr Stark holds up his phone which projects a recording of me being stabbed earlier.
"No phones at the table, Tony." Pepper reminds him. Then she turns to me and I try not to wince as I know what's coming, "Peter, why didn't you say you got hurt? Did you even get the doctors to look at you when we were in the medbay?! God, I thought Tony was bad enough." It wouldn't be the first time she's scolded me, no wonder Mr Stark behaves (slightly) better when she's around.
"I'm sorry, Miss Potts! You see I was going to get it looked at but then I thought they were all too busy and I didn't want to bother—"
"That's enough," she cuts off my ramble, "if you don't start taking better care of yourself I'll send May updates of every single injury you've ever gotten. Do you want that?"
"No! Please don't tell Aunt May!" I beg. "I'll, uh, I'll be more careful!"
"You better, all I seem to be doing is fixing that suit..." Mr Stark exclaims. Pepper eyes him pointedly and he groans, "I know, I know, not exactly spotless record here!" He holds his hands up in surrender and roles his eyes. I decide to change the subject.
"So, uh, when are the rest of the Avengers going to be here?" I ask. "And why are they all coming, anyway? Not that I'm complaining."
"They'll all be here by the next day or so." Mr Stark shrugs, not seeming to care. I wonder how he feels about seeing Steve again? I know their relationship is better, but I think the accords fiasco (recognised by the media as the Avengers' civil war) still affects him. Nobody knows exactly what happened between Steve and Tony but whatever it was mustn't have been good. They seemed to set aside their differences for the whole Thanos thing and they didn't seem to have too many problems with each other earlier, but I can't help but think something will snap. I'm not sure if I want to be there to see it, to be honest.
"No real reason in particular, we just think it's good to have everyone close so the team dynamic can be rebuilt." Pepper explains, which helps me relax a little. So there's NOT some secret world ending battle brewing. Good.
A few minutes of comfortable silence pass, where we are all able to enjoy the lasagna. Pepper is certainly a better cook than Mr Stark; mostly because I've never eaten his food but he is known for being a pretty terrible cook. You can't have everything, I guess.
"Okay, so tomorrow!" Pepper begins as we're all nearly finished, "Tony you have to go to the board meeting, I mean it." Mr Stark groans dramatically at that but she continues. "I'll do my best to deal with the press, I'll just say that we're doing our best to deal with what happened and that there's no reason to be alarmed. Will you be around, Peter?"
"I'll be patrolling, I guess." I shrug, my mind not fully made up yet.
"What do we do about Princess and the beast?" Mr Stark asks. That's a weird way to say Hiccup.
"I don't think he's any real threat, to be honest. But there's no harm in being cautious." Pepper responds.
"What's he doing, anyway?" Mr Stark wonders, most likely hoping he's not wandering around.
"Hiccup appears to be entering the second stage of Non-REM." Friday responds.
"And the dragon?" Pepper asks.
"While it's difficult to get a read on him, the dragon appears to be asleep as well."
"We shouldn't leave them alone in the tower," Pepper concludes. "I think one of us should always be here."
"Should we tell the others?" I ask, "Just in case we can't be here."
"That's a good idea, actually. Who's here?" Pepper nods.
"Natasha, Yelena and Steve are present." Friday responds. "Would you like to inform them of the situation?"
"Yes, tell them to try not to scare him, I don't wanna deal with the paperwork of a dead guy." Mr Stark orders. I guess that's fair. "And don't let Hiccup wander around my tower, if you can help it."
"What access would you like him limited to?"
"Just his room and the avengers' floor—monitor the kitchen equipment—, medbay, and bathrooms." Pepper explains. "Unless we're with him."
"Understood, ms Potts."
We talk idly as we finish eating for the next few minutes, before I excuse myself and head back to my room. Once I get there I call MJ, who picks up swiftly.
"Hey," I greet with a smile.
"Hey Peter." She responds causally.
"Good dinner?"
"Yep, it wasn't lasagna though."
"Aww, next time I'll save you some leftovers."
"Okay." She shrugs. I lean over and pick up my homework, wanting to finish it as we talk.
"So, I know the second section of the calculus..."

And there we go. Damn this chapter has a lot of dialogue oops. I hope you somewhat enjoyed nonetheless. As usual, next chapter is Hiccup. See ya then.
