Chapter 15: At Least They Have Lamb (Hiccup)
Previously:
They all made it to Stark Tower where they are lead away from the media and inside, Pepper is introduced to them, Toothless and Hiccup have their first interaction with an elevator ( -3/10 would not recommend), and they make it to the medbay where the media staff is ready to help.
Refer to the last chapter for Peter's recollection of the recent events.
Now:
The doctors are all very patient with me as they work, pausing to explain something to me when I am confused—which is, admittedly, all the time. Their technology is amazing. Sure, Gothi is great, but she's nothing like these guys. They're able to pinpoint exactly what is wrong and what they need to do to fix it! I mean no disrespect to Gothi, she's very talented with the resources we have, but these guys are very very good at healing.
As time passes, the fogginess in my brain starts to fade a little— probably due to the "pain killers" they put into me. My guess is correct, as it doesn't take long and my side is completely numb—I no longer feel the pain there. From that point they're able to get a better look at my side without it causing me pain. At one point another man comes in with a large book and a red cape, asking me questions I've already answered for Tony and Spider-man. However, he seems to have a better idea of what he's doing, ultimately coming to a conclusion that I don't quite grasp in my current state. Something about not being from the past, not being from the future, not being from this earth but being from another earth that could still be the same earth. He leaves as soon as he came, but Tony and Spider-man stay in the room.
Toothless remains by my side the entire time, forcing the doctors to step around him. One of them comments on the saddle, realising that I ride him and saying it's cool. I don't really talk about it— I am in no position to go spilling secrets to these people. I try to sit still as they work, poking and prodding at my side, but I can't be more grateful when they finally stop and wrap the wounds.
"Okay, now I need to warn you that when the pain comes back it's not gonna be fun," One of the doctors— Craig—explains as I slip my clothes back on but not my armour. "I'm gonna leave you with these, you should take one with water three times a day for maybe a week or two." He hands me a small white bottle, which rattles. I curiously open the lid to see small white round objects. "They're called pills, make sure you swallow them whole." Craig adds once he sees my curiosity. I nod to show I understand.
"Your wound will require redressing every few hours for the next couple of days." The other doctor, Helen, explains. She hands me a bundle of bandages and a weird container. "Use these, or come and see us if you're confused about how."
"Okay. I will, thanks," I promise as I tuck them into some of my pockets. I'm always adding pockets and such to my outfits— you wouldn't believe how many things have fell out when flying. It's ridiculous how easy it is for things to fall out of your hand.
I look to the doorway when a new person enters: its Pepper. She walks up to Craig and they have a quiet conversation, glancing at me once or twice which undoubtedly means they're discussing me. Fun. After a few seconds she nods and makes her way over to me.
"They say you're free to go, so I'm gonna go ahead and have Tony show you to the room you'll be staying in." She tells me, gesturing briefly to Tony—who's doing something with a small hand held square object in the corner of the room. "You're not a prisoner here, but we'd appreciate it if you'd stay within the tower; people can be far less understanding because a lot has happened to this city and this world."
I nod, hesitant. "I... I guess that makes sense, alright." I don't have a reason to leave, really. They aren't exactly threatening us anymore. But we'll see if that changes. And if it does... well, I'm sure we can break out of here and disappear into the busy world below.
"Alright, we'll go ahead and have some food sent up to you. I talked with the doctors a moment ago to discuss possible foods to stay away from, especially since you might have natural allergies to some of our food as it could be different, so we'll do some more testing tomorrow. But what do you usually eat?" She moves on. I shrug. Do we even have the same food?
"I'm not picky, I grew up eating whatever we managed to grow. Meat, vegetables."
"I think we can work with that; play it safe. And, uh, your...dragon? Does it eat?"
"He eats!" I chuckle. "A hell of a lot. Basically a barrel full. Any kind of fish—but not eel."
Pepper nods, scribing down on some paper before she points at Tony. "Tony, show them to the guest room. I've gotta go speak with the lawyers."
"Just ignore th—"
"I can't just ignore them, Tony. If I did, we wouldn't have any sensible people running this company." She retorts, before walking off. She glances at Toothless as she does and shakes her head, muttering under her breath. "God, why is my life so weird."
"Alright," Tony claps his hands, "lets get this over with!"
"I'll tag along," Spider-man declares brightly as I stand up from the bed. Toothless springs up eagerly, happy to be moving away from this place. Tony leads the way out of the room and down the hall.
A few minutes later, after another traumatising elevator trip and several hallways, we come to a white door. Spider-man continues down the hall, saying something about making a 'call'. Whatever that means. "Alright, this is you." Tony opens the door seemingly bored, "if you need anything, ask Friday."
"Who's Friday?" I ask, stepping into the room with Toothless in tow (A tight, very awkward fit). I look around. There's a large bed, looking very comfortable, an adjacent door, a table and chair, and an open closet. There's a large black rectangle on the wall, which is very strange.
"Hello, I am Friday: an artificial intelligence tasked with assisting Tony Stark, friends and guests during their time at Stark Tower. I can assist with lights, temperature, security, questions and more." A weird female-like voice sounds from the ceiling, startling me so hard I jump in the air. Tony smirks in amusement before leaving through the door. It feels slightly weird to be alone in this unfamiliar environment; like there's a certain security to being in company with people who actually know the surroundings.
"Oh." I mumble after calming down and taking in what she said, surprised. "Okay..."
"How would you like to be addressed during your time here?"
"Just Hiccup is fine."
I decide to see what's through the adjacent door first, so I walk over and open it. "Wow!" I exclaim, admiring the shiny waterworks in the small room. "This is crazy!" I laugh, seeing how smooth and clean everything is as I test the water. We've got very similar things on Berk, much of it that I've improved, but we don't have this type of material. It's pretty cool and the water pressure is great. I take a peak out the small window above the sink, admiring the strange yet captivating view.
I return to the main room a few moments later and take a seat on the bed, surprised at how soft and comfortable it is. "Try not to set this one on fire, bud!" I chuckle at Toothless, who's busy sniffing the bed. He suddenly jumps up on the bed, which nearly knocks me off and makes me laugh.
A few minutes later, when I'm just laying on the bed trying to come to terms with the situation, there's a knock at the door. I look at Toothless who returns my curious look, and look back to the door.
"Come in," I call. At least they're polite here.
The door opens and someone stands there, donned in white clothing and a weird hat. "Hey," she smiles. "I've got your food here. It's a lot of fish." She chuckles, gesturing to the large bucket of fish in her arms. I smile, "yeah don't I know it." I get up and walk up to her, "thank you, I've got them from here."
She hands the bucket over, as well as some kind of clear container—which is quite warm to the touch—and some metal cutlery. "So why do you need so much fish, anyway?"
"Ohh, you...uh, you probably don't want to know..." I chuckle awkwardly, trying to assume a pose that doesn't look suspicious but does block Toothless from view. I figure that if she hasn't been told, I probably shouldn't tell her.
She shrugs. "Yeah, I guess not. Well I've gotta get back to work, enjoy your food."
"Bye." I say awkwardly. She leaves and I shut the door. I turn to Toothless, who's looking at me in anticipation.
I beckon him over, but as a second thought take us to the bathroom. I don't know if fish would come out of this soft floor, so I don't take the chance. The smooth tiles of the bathroom seem fine though, so I let him at it there. Toothless digs in to the fish eagerly, sure there's not as many as he'd usually have, but there's enough so it should sustain him. I turn my attention to the clear container, pulling off the lid to get a look at the food.
It's some sort of stew, it looks quite like I would usually eat, so I don't have to worry too much. Taking a bite of it, however, proves that it has quite a different taste. They must have different flavouring here. It's quite nice though. Just not what I'm used to. It still tastes like lamb, so at least I can say in confidence that they have sheep here.
By the time I finish Toothless has too, so I run the faucet over the containers to clear them of anything before leaving them just outside the main door. After that happens I can't really be bothered doing anything else, so I lay out on the bed to succumb to sleep, joined by Toothless at the foot of it. Man, I really hope whatever happened can be resolved. I just want to go home. I don't want to be stuck here.
Okay, I know it's kinda boring, sorry. But we've gotta have filler chapters before we get to the action, lol. If you have suggestions feel free to drop them (can't guarantee I'll take em cause I've already outlined the story, but you never know).
Thank you for 1k views 🙏 I'm glad this fic is being well received 😊
