Chapter 9-The Unknown
The smell of the familiar berries is the first thing I notice. Turning my head, I see Crystal walking in. She throws a few more into her mouth, scowling when the juice drips down onto the pink fabric.
"They're going to kill me for this..." she mutters as she walks.
Who? I ask, tilting my head slightly.
Crystal shrugs. "People. People who worry more about my outfit than they worry about me." She walks past me, setting her bag down near the back. "Although, with all the fussing over me they've been doing lately..."
Is that why you had to leave? The pieces are starting to fit together.
"Partially." At her words, I sigh internally. There was more to the story, and I knew that she wouldn't exactly be eager to tell it.
Crystal jumps onto a good-sized rock, sitting down. "You ever meet anyone who just wants to tie you down?"
I look at her. Considering you're the first person I've met...
"Good point..." She sighs, leaning against the cave wall. "I just want to make my own decisions, you know? This place might be new to me, but I'm not going to just sit there as they watch me, never allowing me to leave." She grins. "Besides, I can fight off anything that attacks me."
I look at her thin frame, a bit skeptical of her confidence. And how long have you been here?
She looks up, thinking. "A month or two. I'm getting used to things still, but the place I'm staying seems very...interesting. I feel very welcome there, like I belong."
And they still try to hold you down?
"A few of them don't." She smiles. "The rest don't exactly trust me, considering they've never been to where I come from."
I think about asking her where that pace is, but she's focused on the berries now, obviously trying to end the conversation. She'd probably only answer with a vague explanation.
Crystal was nice. She liked me. She hadn't told anyone about me.
But what could she possibly be hiding?
I rest my head on my leg, thinking. She wasn't like anything I'd ever seen, but then again, I hadn't exactly seen much.
I decided to simply close my eyes for a bit, leaving her to her own thoughts. Maybe, eventually, she'd open up.
But for now, she was content with her berries and cryptic answers, and I was content with her company, the treasure she had given me, and the fire in me that she somehow knew how to start.
A/N: Like the Imagine Dragons reference in the title? Heh, Imagine Dragons...
