Chapter 3- Footprints

Humans.

I don't know how I knew about humans- and elves, for that matter. I just knew. And it wasn't until I saw tracks that I realized I knew.

A single set of footprints, running through the trees. Dirt marks on a particular tree, with various branches snapped along the way. And at the top, a scrap of paper. I don't know what it said. Human words were unknown to me.

I still carried it back to my nest- Well, it was a den now. I had found a nearby cave.

The mudstains continued along the tree, until they abruptly stopped. On the ground were four deep imprints, two feet, two hands. Handprints on a leaf cluster. They probably wiped it off. Humans, always afraid to get dirty.

I suddenly heard a noise, almost like a type of groan. Then a thump. Another groan, then a small, high-pitched growling noise.

I walked as silently as I could to the noise, and soon determined that it was coming from a small tree. Pulling back the leaves, my heart seemed to stop.

It was a small, thin, tan being, with a mess of brown fur on its head. Green and dark blue fabric covered its body, and its feet were covered with mud. Its eyes were closed, and its mouth was slightly open, revealing two rows of fairly flat teeth.

A human.
