Chapter 1
It wasn't everyday that an important political figure was to be visiting your academy. Everyone was running up and down the halls, putting up posters, and dropping their books on the floor in a scurry to make it to their next class before the tardy bell rang. As far as I can remember, the halls had never been this hectic. The mayor was visiting our esteemed academy for the rich and it was apparently a big deal to most people. It didn't feel like a big deal to me. My opinion would be different if this wasn't an over invested academy filled with snobby, rich people.
The bell rang and the halls were empty, leaving no evidence that life existed here only moments ago. I hadn't been assigned a class this hour so I went to the library like always. The halls were quiet. My footsteps echoed loudly. I attempted to quiet them so I wouldn't disturb the ongoing lectures in the passing classrooms. It's almost boring without a class to attend. I'm the only student in this academy that has a free period. I'm fairly certain it's due to my academic progress and excellent grades. The administrators didn't find it necessary to fill this class hour on my schedule.
The library was massive. Millions of books lined three of the walls from the floor all the way up to the ceilings. At least one of every book that existed in the world could be found on the shelves of this library. There were ladders placed a few feet apart and allowed readers access to the higher shelves. Large rectangular tables were scattered across the wood floor. They were made of the highest quality of wood. The academy had even hired personnel to come in and polish them every night. They were perfect.
One of the librarians had noticed me walk in but didn't further acknowledge my presence. Leave it to the academy to hire stuck up rich people. I sat in one of the chairs that surrounded the tables and attempted to make my self comfortable. It was next to impossible seeing as the chairs are made from the same material the tables originated from but I managed to get comfortable. I pulled books from my school bag and began to study them. There wasn't anything new to learn. I already knew everything there was to read in them.
I heard footsteps approach where I was sitting and broke from my trance. I met the gaze of the librarian who had noticed me walk in earlier. He was a stern looking man with an intimidating figure. His hair was pitch black and his chin was slightly pointed. His eyes were almost rectangular and his irises were blood red. He was tall and skinny and wore a tight, black dress-coat that accompanied a pair of slim black pants. His shoes were black and polished so much they were blinding. He gave off this threatening vibe that would send chills down your spine and make anyone's back stiffen like a board. I was slightly threatened.
From behind his back, he pulled out a small black book and handed it to me. The cover was made from a black leather that was rough but it felt heavenly when I ran my fingers across the cover. I lifted the book to my nose and inhaled the heavenly scent. It smelled like someone had been keeping in an underground lair where potions and experiments were held. It had that old people vibe about it as well, like someone had owned it for years. I loved it. There were gold letters placed across the cover that read...
"Creatures of the Sky?" I questioned as I looked up at the librarian. He stared at me for a moment as if he were questioning why I had asked the question.
"What about it?" He finally asked, his voice stern. I gulped. Even his voice is terrifying.
"What's it about?" I asked. I awaited a response for what seemed like an eternity. He turned around and walked but stopped shortly after and turned his head.
"I guess you'll just have to read it and find out."
