8: Nicholina

And that is how I got trapped in the King of Pira's jail cell with none other than two Dragon kids I'd just met.

"Hazel, Hazel oh stars," Remi gasped, shaking Hazel. She gently propped the other girl up and felt for a pulse. The guards had just left after throwing us in the cell. I immediately stood and grabbed the bars. I shook them as hard as I could but there was no weak spots. The bars were far too close together to squeeze out of.

I turned to the other two and scrambled over to them. "Is she ok?" I asked.

Remi took her fingers away from Hazel's neck and nodded. "She's fine, just unconscious. These shackles probably are to keep her from shifting. Is there any way out of here that you can see?"

I shook my head. "Theres nothing. I think we'll just have to wait and see what the King does with us. The only problem is that those guards saw a Dragon in those woods. We'll probably be handed over to the Zorg as soon as possible."

Remi cursed under her breath. "What happened back there?"

"Well the guards came, but luckily we managed to hide Gen before they found us. We tried lying to them but they were going to take us to the king anyways so we fought back. Hazel and I were captured, you were injured, I think they hit you on the head. Hazel started freaking out and there was nothing I could do..."

Remi gave a dry laugh. "Surprise, Hazel has a Dragon form too."

I nodded. "Is her dragon like yours? Yours looked like it was forcing you to shift. I'm just realizing that we haven't gotten a chance to talk about this much."

"In a sense," Remi said, "her Dragon really only shows itself during horribly stressful moments. When she's in danger or just has a lot on her shoulders. When we first met, she'd only shifted a couple of times before and it was new to her. We figured it out together. My Dragon kind of has a schedule that I've learned to follow. Sometimes it depends how long I shift for. If I shift for less time, I have less time till the next shifting day. Does that make sense?"

"Yeah I think so," I said, "my Dragon has never forced itself out, I've always chosen when to shift. I wonder why it's different for all of us?"

Remi shrugged and leaned against the cell wall. "I don't know. From rumors I've heard about us Dragons, I would guess there are two types of Dragons. Dragons who can shift whenever they want, and Dragons who can't. But I've never heard of Hazel's case."

"Can I ask how you two met?"

Remi laughed again. "That's an interesting story. Well, we were both in elementary school actually, I had been feeling sick that day but my Aunt and Uncle made me go to school anyway. I had to leave in the middle of the class because I was having a Dragon fever, that's what Hazel and I call it, and Hazel followed me. It was a stupid move on her part, but honestly, I'm glad she did. If she hadn't, I don't know where we'd be today."

"Aww," I said, "thats a really nice-"

"Oh my gods," Remi interrupted, "Nick, you could turn into a Dragon right now, couldn't you?"

"Well yes," I said, taken aback, "but there would be guards, we would be caught."

"No no," Remi said, "they don't know you're a Dragon. As far as they know, you and I are just normal humans traveling with a Dragon, the Dragon being Hazel, so that's why we are in here too. We have to get out of here somehow to get back to Gen, and we can't let the Zorg find us. What if you shifted and I don't know, smashed the wall open? We'd be free in an instant."

"But wouldn't that bring guards?"

"Definitely, but by the time they got here, you could be flying away with us."

I nodded slowly, letting it sink in. "Alright, what's the plan?"

"You shift, then smash through that wall," Remi explained, "I'll get Hazel on your back and get on myself, then we fly back into the woods. The guards may have arrows so when we fly out, we should angle around over the roof, that way they can't reach us."

"One small problem," I said, indicating the cell around us, "will this be big enough for a very large Dragon and not smash you guys?"

"We'll have to find out," she said, "It's kind of our only option. If the Zorg come, they'll choros test Hazel and she's as good as dead. They'll test us next."

I nodded. "Alright, we don't have a choice. Here goes."

I willed my Dragon out and the alien sensation passed over my body again. I began to grow and the space seemed to shrink. Remi dragged Hazel into a corner, as far from me as they could get.

It was a tight fit but we did it. I managed to twist my long neck around in the horribly scrunched space and blink one eye at Remi. She gave me a thumbs-up back.

I scrunched around until I reached the back wall. I managed to raise my talons and with all my might, smashed them into the wall. I nearly howled but managed to choke it back. The wall was solid stone, probably several feet thick. I had barely cracked it.

I heard Remi curse and shifted around. I turned my head to look at her.

"You may just have to rip out the bars," she said, "if there's guards, we can take them by surprise and get away while they're trying to figure out what's happening."

An idea suddenly struck me. We were going to get out of there.

I shifted around again to face the solid metal bars. I grabbed two of them in my talons and ripped them out of their sockets, bending them in the process. I ripped out the rest of them and then collapsed onto the stone, grateful for the open after being jammed into a space where I could barely move.

Remi hurried out of the cell after me, supporting Hazel. Hazel was somewhat conscious again, but looked confused. Remi helped her onto my back, seated between my spikes, and then climbed on herself, using my scales for hand and footholds. The second they were on, I crept forward. Though the passage was bigger than the cell had been, it was still claustrophobic.

I rounded several corners, not really knowing where I was going. A guard took me by surprise as I came around a bend and I reacted instinctively. They didn't even have time to reach for their sword. My jaw opened and a huge blast of water came hurtling at the guard from large openings in the roof my my mouth. The entire passageway was soaked and the waterlogged guard lay on the ground several feet away.

I pressed forward and encountered no more guards until we came to the entrance, a large archway, the double doors open. The doors rarely closed unless it was raining.

I stayed concealed behind a wall and studied the guards at the door. There were no more than ten. Remi tapped me on the back and I turned my neck to look at her.

"Can you do that wave thing again?" She asked, "but bigger?"

I nodded, but I wasn't sure I could make the wave big enough.

Right as I was about to attempt it, another guard from outside ran up to the squad by the door. They started talking frantically but they were too far away for me to understand what they were saying. One of them pointed in our direction and half the guards started advancing towards us and drawing weapons.

"Hide!" Remi hissed from behind me, "or do the wave thing, now!"

I backed up, panicking. The guards were slow in their caution, but they would find us soon. Suddenly there was a hot pain in my tail. I yelped and spun, shaking off the guard who had stabbed me from behind.

Remi shouted from my back. I swung my tail in a wide arc and smacked some soldiers swarming and trying to get on my back.

I took a deep breath, opened my jaw, and let loose the largest blast of water I could. It slammed the guards full in the face and knocked them over, but there was more coming, and an alarm was blaring. I lurched forward, trampling guards and washing the rest of them away.

Finally we made it to the door. I slowly backed out, keeping the guards at bay with my jets of water, but they were advancing.

"We've got to go!" Remi said.

I shot another blast of water into the mayhem and then spun out the door. I spread my wings and leapt into the sky, trusting that Remi would keep herself and Hazel from falling off. Once I was airborne I twisted up and shot over the roof and towards the forest again.

I might've turned the prison into a new lake, but we were free.
