Chapter One

My vision faltered towards the purple sky. A tumultuous swirl of clouds touched the ground, brutally demolishing anything in its path. Not even a morsel of bread could survive this untimely storm.

Lightning sprung from the storm from cloud to cloud, occasionally striking the ground with a loud rumble; a sure warning of demise and destruction in the near future if not in the very present time.

I bolted through the woods, my heart racing in my chest.

It seemed as though each tree had a message inscribed in its pigment pattern. My black hair whipped my face and traveled inside of my mouth, causing me to forget the incident.

Why does this always happen? I thought as I came to a clearing in the seemingly endless copses.

Cobblestone roads and homes graced the dark ground. The sky colored everything around it to be the same eerie dark purple. The only source of light was the glow of the repetitious lightning and the white streaks that trickled through the windows.

Even the bravest of all soldiers has cowered when they are near our homes, not because we are the thing to be feared, but because the ruler is a vindictive and destructive human being, if I could even call him that. He has brought to life many trolls and witches, but the most dangerous things of his creation are the objects and individuals that manifest themselves to be as he is.

I put all of my thoughts aside and opened the heavy wood door that brought me into my home.

"Mother? Father?", I asked as I cautiously moved from room to room. "I have brought berries and a loaf of bread.", I felt for the basket on my arm but stopped when I realized that I had left my basket in the woods.

They rushed into the small room that we called a gather. "Put the bread and berr-", mother stopped mid-sentence and looked down at my empty arms. "Where is the food?", she brought her hands to her hips, her thick black locks spilling down her shoulders as she moved.

"I left it in the forest. I am so very sorry. I had forgotten it in a tree while-", "while exploring.", mother interrupted.

"Oh, how I wish that you had not gotten my adventurous spirit!", exclaimed mother.

"Adventurous? You are barely capable of looking under the table for fear that there might be a spider!", retorted father as he stomped his foot on the hard stone floor.

"Hush now! I have a surprise for Ellia!", whispered mother as she put her finger to her rosy lips.

"Has she not returned?", I asked, worried.

"No. Why do you ask?"

"There is another storm! She's out on her own! I know that she is older but I can't help it!", I burst from my home and back into the clearing. Leaves swirled around my feet and circled up my body.

Unlike normal leaves, these were all black and purple and in many people's perspective, these leaves were a sign of a curse or a sign of death. I ignored the folklore and ran further through the forest. Branches hit my face and scratched at my legs.

Blood dripped down to my ankles, adding an all to familiar Crimson liquid to the sorrowful leaves.

"Ellia! Please! If you hear me, come back!", the only sound was the howling wind and the rustling leaves. "Stone", whispered the trees as they racked up against one another. A sudden flight of a black crow made me jump back and fall to the ground.

It landed beside me and cawed ominously before saying, "We know where you are. Run, but you will never escape. An uninformed heratige you will find. Weakness and evil are only part of your soul. There is still so much more that you don't know, and that you will never know. We are coming for you, Jovey. Don't think that you are alone, because you are never alone. Somebody follows you day by day, but you'll never find them. Trust no one. Trust no one.", the bird flew away, hitting a tree trunk and falling to the ground, blood trickling over the leaves and falling down the tree trunk.

My lips uttered the same words before I fell to the ground in shock. "Trust no one."
