Chapter 39: The Order
Kirishima's PoV
A short time later we sat at a small wooden table in Miss Farney's living room. No one knew exactly what to say and a strange silence had fallen on us. We were sitting here with a strange woman who clearly knew what I was and hadn't even flinched when she heard about my healing powers. Even though she seemed friendly and open-minded, I had recently experienced too much to simply trust a strange woman.
But my hunger was stronger than my doubts and I sighed relieved when I tasted the strong stew. Katsuki also ate faster than usual, which is why I suspected that he was no different. When I tilted the bowl a little to scrape out the rest, Miss Farney spoke.
"Would you like some more?" she asked motherly. I nodded, still a little hesitant and handed her my empty bowl.
She filled it up for me and asked Katsuki if he still wanted something, but he refused with a shake of his head. I felt her gaze as I ate my second portion. She seemed to wait patiently for me to finish. But her gaze made me nervous, so I shoveled the stew into me a little faster.
Sighing, I leaned back and pushed the empty bowl a bit away from me before raising my head and meeting her gaze.
She smiled friendly at me before she started talking. "You said you knew someone with my accent. With whom did you grow up?"
"With Miss Crownway." I replied curtly, observing her reaction.
She smiled friendly and her eyes lit up. "I thought so because your friend said that you are a Kirishima. But I had to make sure. Eijirou Kirishima, right?"
"How do you know that?" Katsuki asked suspiciously, expressing exactly my thoughts.
Miss Farney gave him a quick look and then looked back at me, a knowing smile on her lips. From the corner of my eye I could see Katsuki's annoyed face, obviously not used to being ignored. I reached under the table for his hand and pressed it briefly.
"Miss Crownway and I have known each other for a while," she replied slowly. "When your mother came to us and begged us to take you in, we were both on a mission."
I frowned. "You knew my mother? What kind of mission?"
"Miss Crownway never told you?" she asked in amazement and sat upright in her chair.
I shook my head.
She sighed and ran her hand through her hair, loosening some of the grey strands from her bun and adjusting her glasses. "You must know that all of us from our order live here in the mountains. So between the land of the Todorokis and that of the dragons. Every day we experience the tensions between the two cultures, which are mainly based on misunderstandings."
Katsuki snorted. "I wouldn't call a raid on a village where dragons kill every single one a misunderstanding," he growled with his teeth clenched.
Miss Farney looked at him for a moment. "Mistakes were made. On both sides," she said frowning.
"Mistakes you call that?" he asked, and rage flashed in his eyes. "You would call the brutal murder of my parents a mistake?" His voice had taken on a threatening undertone.
Miss Farney remained silent and looked at Katsuki for a moment. "I'm sorry for what happened to you, but the people are not completely innocent of this situation. It were the Todorokis who started the war. Not the present king. No, the war is much older. The humans with their short life span may have forgotten how it started, but the memory of the dragons lasts much longer. Whoever messes with such a powerful race must bear the consequences, for better or for worse. And the dragons are not a passive race that only defends itself. They are hot-blooded and do not forgive so quickly."
Katsuki wanted to reply, but I briefly squeezed his hand again and cleared my throat, drawing their attention back to me. "So far, so good. But what does all this have to do with me? What was that mission you were talking about? And what order is that?"
Miss Farney folded her hands and frowned, apparently not quite knowing how to explain this. "You know the legend of the half dragons? That the clan's tribal elders would shift at the summer solstice and procreated the half dragons?" she asked, looking over her glasses at us.
We both nodded. "Well, have you ever thought about how this could happen?" Confused, I frowned and hesitantly shook my head. Miss Farney smiled at me good-naturedly. "It's a spell. A long time ago there was a dragon who fell in love with a human woman. Her name was Soriha. She was a powerful witch and returned his love from the bottom of her heart. She created this impressive spell. One like it had never been before. On the one hand to be close to him and on the other hand because she hoped that the two cultures would get a better understanding of each other through the creation of the half dragons." She smiled sadly. "Unfortunately, she achieved exactly the opposite. The then king was afraid that such powerful creatures could suddenly join his people and ordered his army to wipe out those these tribal elders. That was the beginning of the war."
Katsuki and I had a quick look at each other. This information had to sink in first. Miss Farney gave us a few minutes before she continued. "We of the Order keep this knowledge from the beginning of the war and ...", she looked me straight in the eye, "we try to protect the half dragons in the whole country, hoping that one day they will be able to restore peace as mediators of the cultures."
I swallowed and it was as if a heavy weight was lying on my shoulders. These were completely new perspectives on the dragons and especially on my role as a half dragon. "What can I even do?" I asked with a frown and stared at the table in front of me.
"Kirishima. You are descended from one of the three greatest dragon clans. You are powerful, which shows the healing of your mate. You can do a lot," she said, a sparkle in her eyes.
I shook my head hesitantly. "Let me think about it. I need some fresh air first". I looked over at Katsuki, who looked at me with a worried look. "Would you come out with me for a moment?" I asked quietly.
Katsuki nodded and pressed my hand a little harder before we got up and went outside.
