Chapter 12: Rescue
Kirishima's PoV
Bakugou's eyes went wide when he realized his mistake. He had lost sight of his surroundings and in the darkness, had concentrated only on me and our fight. He flailed with his arms and tried hard to reach the branch of one of the small pines to hold on. But his arm wasn't long enough and his fingertips barely touched the bark.
His desperate look flickered briefly to me before he fatefully closed his eyes and fell.
Before I realized what I was doing, a shock went through my body. I pushed myself off with my hind legs and jumped after him. I put my wings close to the body to keep the air resistance as low as possible as I fell with him towards the sea, black in the darkness. But like this I didn't catch up with him. I beat my mighty wings hard and dashed to the ground at an almost frightening speed, but somehow I had to get under him.
But my plan didn't work quite so well. Even though the cliff had a height of 60 meters, the time I had to reach Bakugou was very short. When I finally caught up with him, we were already far too close to the surface of the water for me to get under him and intercept my dive. And so I did the only thing I could think of. I put my wings around him and pressed him close to me to protect him from what was about to come.
The surface of the water was as hard as concrete when we hit the sea. My strong body and my hard scales didn't prevent me from almost losing consciousness when the pain struck me. The force of our fall pressed us deep under water, where we hit a second time on the bottom of the ocean.
I closed my eyes briefly in pain and then began to swim frantically to the surface, Bakugou with a front leg carefully pressed to me. I gasped for air as we came to the surface.
Bakugou coughed and clung weakly to me. I looked down at him anxiously. The dragonslayer had numerous scratches, he had probably injured himself on my sharp-edged scales. His eyelids were heavy and he seemed about to lose consciousness. I growled softly as a reminder to stay awake but he looked at me weakly. "Red ...," he whispered quietly before losing consciousness totally, loosening his grip and risking falling back into the water. My heart became a little warm when I heard the nickname and had to swallow at the same time. It was not easy for me to see the strong dragonslayer in such a condition.
I grabbed him carefully with my teeth on his cape and tried to position him on my back without him immediately falling down again. Thank God the sea was fairly calm, otherwise I would have had to fight the waves.
But what should I do now? I peered up the cliff and saw dark silhouettes standing at the edge of the abyss. I heard distant calls, but the sound of the sea and the wind prevented me from understanding anything. But I didn't want to go back up there anyway. I didn't doubt that I could escape them if I delivered Bakugou to them, but they wouldn't let me go just like that.
Two things had to happen now: I had to flee from the king's troops and Bakugou had to be taken care of. So I decided to get a little distance as soon as possible and then land in a safe place to take care of him. He had to get dry and warm as soon as possible.
But starting out of the water turned out to be more difficult than I thought, especially as I was not allowed to make too panicked movements, otherwise Bakugou's unconscious body was going to slide right off my back. After I desperately struggled, my right hind leg found a rock that was just below the surface. Strongly I pushed myself up and managed to maneuver my body out of the water. Finally in the air I flapped energetically with my wings and picked up speed.
I flew further north along the coast. From above I looked at the night landscape and suddenly I realized that this was the first time I really flew. The feeling of freedom and the wind under my wings was intoxicating. But I couldn't really enjoy it. My whole body hurt from the fall and I was incredibly tired.
How long did I have to fly to be safe? I knew that I had already flown a long distance and slowly began to sink. Sure it would be safer to fly a little further, but I was worried about Bakugou.
I was glad that my dragon eyes could see quite well in the darkness. The landscape here was rough and rocky and I quickly found a sheltered spot for a camp and headed towards it.
I tried to land as gently as possible. Then I carefully pulled Bakugou down from my back and turned myself back into a human. Again the ring that had been put on my claw in the meantime began to glow and this time I watched what it did. As I looked down at myself I saw my clothes materializing around my human body. This ring apparently kept my clothes in a spell as long as I was transformed into a dragon. Fascinated I stared at the jewel and thanked Ochako silently for it. It would be rather unpleasant if I would be naked after each shift.
I quickly collected a little of the dry branches scattered here and there and piled them up. I took a deep breath and let the warm fire rise in my throat. The flames lighted from my mouth and immediately the dry wood of the campfire began to burn.
Bakugou was still lying unconscious on the ground and I manoeuvred him close to the warming fire. The fur of his cloak was soaking wet on his skin and I took it off so he wouldn't catch cold. I rest his head in my lap so he wouldn't have to lie on the hard ground. Carefully I stroked the still wet hair from his face and my fingertips ran over his cuts. Thank God they weren't particularly deep, he certainly only slipped with force against my scale direction at our impact. But otherwise he seemed unscathed, which was a relief.
I leaned my back against the rock and enjoyed the warmth of the fire. Sighing, I closed my eyes and fell into a light sleep.
Bakugou's PoV
When I woke up my whole body hurt and especially my head was ringing. For a moment I kept my eyes closed. Where was I? Confused, I tried to remember what I had done last. Then I remembered. The fight with Kirishima. Then I had fallen. He had saved me. Or had I imagined it?
I opened my eyes and immediately squeezed them again, because the sunlight dazzled me. What time was it? I turned my head to look at my surroundings and noticed that I was lying on something soft. Frowning, I looked up and saw Red, in whose lap I lay on apparently.
The half dragon leaned asleep against the rock face. His mouth was slightly open and one of his long red strands hung in his face. Then my gaze fell on his naked arms and upper body. My breath stopped for a moment. His skin was covered all over with bruises. He had taken the entire force of our impact with his body. He looked really badly injured.
As if he had noticed my staring gaze, Red's eyelids suddenly fluttered. Tired, he looked down at me and smiled. And I couldn't help but smile at my rescuer as well.
