Chapter 38: Negotiations
Kirishima's PoV
The next morning, I did not want to open my eyes at all. The bed was warm and soft and Katsuki was still in my arms. A light breeze blew through the open window and carried the fresh morning air in. I sighed satisfied.
When I finally opened my eyes, I looked directly into the red orbs of my mate, who looked up at me with a slight smile. "You're already awake," I said with a mild surprise.
"Not long yet," Katsuki replied and leaned up a little so that his face hovered over mine, looking deep into my eyes. He lowered his head a little bit and brushed his lips feather-light along my cheekbones and kissed the corner of my mouth for a moment before he connected our lips to a soft kiss.
Instinctively, my hands moved up his back and pressed him closer to me. But even though I enjoyed our togetherness very much, I knew that we should not stretch our morning too long. The people of the Order were certainly waiting for us to show up and, to be honest, I too wanted to get the negotiations over as quickly as possible. Because after that my mission would be officially over.
Katsuki seemed to think the same. Anyway, he didn't deepen the kiss but leaned up again and looked down to me for a moment thoughtfully.
"What are you thinking right now?" I asked him gently, one hand on his cheek.
"I was just thinking how nice it will be to finally be free. Then I'll have you all to myself again," he said and his gaze wandered to my lips once more.
I smiled and leaned up to him to give him another short kiss on the lips. I was looking forward to it too, even though I knew it would take years before complete peace would reign between the dragons and the humans. Yes, it would probably take years for both sides to reject their distrust and fear. But after Todoroki and I had negotiated a peace treaty, there was not much left for us to do. The rest had to come in time.
We exchanged a few loving words before we got up and got ready to go down to the village. Hand in hand we stepped outside and took the small path that led to Miss Farney's cottage. Once there I knocked on the wooden door.
With verve it opened and a smiling Miss Farney stood in it. "Come in you two," she said heartily. I too noticed how much more friendly she was to Katsuki. Was that the case for all members of the Order? Apparently. My mate had finally proven himself in their eyes by his contribution to the mission.
Together we entered the familiar house of the elderly woman. When we stepped into the small kitchen, Todoroki and Midoriya were sitting there having breakfast. Immediately my stomach grumbled. Since we had arrived late yesterday, we had no food in the house and the smell of fresh bread that was coming towards me reminded me of my empty stomach.
Actually, we only wanted to pick them up to go down to the village together, but since they were still eating anyway and I wasn't the only one who was hungry (Katsuki had taken a slice of the fresh bread and sat down without comment to eat it before Miss Farney offered it to him with a frown), we decided to have breakfast too after all. Even though we didn't talk much and I knew Midoriya and Todoroki only from our trip here together, I was happy about the everydayness of the situation. I was tired of the long travelling. Not knowing what would happen the next day was an adventure, but not one that I wanted to experience permanently.
But in the end it was Miss Farney who made us stand up. "Come on, boys. Today is an important day, you shouldn't let the council wait too long for you!" she said sternly. Katsuki frowned a little but we all followed her order, knowing that she was right.
And so we finally went back to the village of the Order. We were just passing through the first few rows of houses when Telana came rushing towards us.
"Kiri!", she greeted me beaming and jumped in my arms. Then she also embraced Katsuki firmly who stiffened a little bit, but accepted it. Then she curiously looked at the prince and Midoriya who stood a little behind him. "I am Telana," she said with a broad smile. Her green eyes sparkled as she offered them both her hand. "I am a member of the Order's council and an expert in the field of the dragon clans and their history."
Midoriya's eyes began to glow. "That's fascinating," he said. "The history of the clans would interest me immensely. Miss Farney told us today in great detail the story of the beginning of the Dragon War. I was incredibly fascinated by it, maybe we could get together again?" he asked excitedly.
Telana laughed. "I'd love to. Perhaps you are a little more patient and more attentive pupil than Kiri", she said and nudged me playfully with the elbow in the side. I rolled with my eyes but was not really mad. It was right. I was always preferred the practical parts of class.
Telana had not waited for us at the entrance of the village without reason. She had the task to receive us and to lead us to the assembly hall. When we stepped through the heavy stone doors, the entire order was already gathered there. Telana meant to take the four chairs at the head end of the room when she passed us and went to her own place next to Taran. The Key Keeper waved at us briefly as a greeting.
As we all sat down, Mr. Dracoon stood up. "Welcome everyone," he said, smiling and looking around. "We're gathered here today so that you can bring us up to date and we can discuss how and when to proceed."
Todoroki cleared his throat. "Why postpone negotiations to another day? I'd like us to settle this today. Please understand that I cannot shirk my other duties for too long."
Mr. Dracoon tilted his head questioningly and also the rest of the faces of the council reflected confusion. Of course, because they didn't know yet that both negotiating partners were already there.
I stood up and attracted attention. A little nervously I took a deep breath. I felt how Katsuki grabbed my hand encouragingly and immediately I began to smile. "To be able to understand the prince's request, I should first tell you my part of this mission," I said and looked around. Mr. Dracoon sat down, folded his hands and looked at me waiting and interested.
Another and hopefully last time I started to tell about my mission. I told how I had travelled to the Kirishimas and how the dragons looked at the people in general. Since I did not know how specifically all the people of the council knew about the characteristics of the half dragons and since it was so relevant, I explained that too. And then I came to the point where my second heritage in the arena had shown itself in the fight for the succession as head of the clan.
You could have heard a pin drop in the room, it was so quiet when I paused briefly to let the information sink in. I looked around for a moment before continuing. "Kurini explained to me that this second attribute I possess is none other than the royal family's armor scales."
Telana audibly gasped for breath and looked at me with big eyes and the people present looked at her confused. She was certainly the only one who knew exactly what that meant. I smiled at her. "Yes, Telana. I am the first Dragon Prince since the royal family was extinguished. Though I do not claim the right to rule, I am the Dragons' highest authority. That means I will negotiate peace with Prince Todoroki on behalf of the dragons." Everyone was staring at me and I smiled nervously.
"Holy shit," Taran finally remarked and the tension eased a little as some started to laugh.
I sat down again and now everyone started talking. For a while I sat silently next to them and just listened to their discussions. For me the case was clear, but I also knew that they had to cancel some of their plans.
Mr. Dracoon raised a hand and the conversations gradually died down. Apparently a little nervously, the leader of the order smiled at me. "So, Prince Todoroki and ... Prince Kirishima, you wish to negotiate peace here and now?"
Todoroki and I nodded in unison. And so quickly the negotiations began. Although the prince and I had already agreed on many things on the way here, it was important to tell the order everything. He acted as a third instance, who didn't stand on either side and recorded everything. But although we had already discussed a lot, the whole conversation dragged on.
It wasn't quite that simple after all. It wasn't enough that we both simply decided that peace would now prevail. We had to legislate on the consequences of one of our people acting against the peace treaty and we needed plans to bring our peoples closer together. For the latter the Order was very helpful. As Kaminari hopefully already did for us, they would play a major role in the educational work.
And finally, we both gave a bunch of signatures on the documents we had made during the meeting. Dragons certainly didn't care much for a scribbled signature on a piece of paper, but humans did, so it had to be done.
And then we were done. I put my last signature in the given place and shook out my hand, which now hurt a little. Then I looked around. The audience looked up all satisfied and exhausted. A grin crept on my lips.
"Yeah!", Telana shouted laughing and triumphantly raised a fist. Katsuki next to me snorted amusedly when the already elderly gentlemen entered her scream of‚ joy. We had made it. We had accomplished what generations of the Order had worked on.
