"GET UP!!!!!"
I nearly flew out of my scales. "Wha? Who?" Toothless laughed at me, and Hiccup chuckled. Stormfly stuck her head through the open door and Astrid stood next to Hiccup.
"Ready to fly?," Hiccup said.
I stared at him as if a horn had just sprouted out of his head. "What?," I said. "F-flying?"
Stormfly laughed. "You heard the chief," she smirked. "If you really wanna be a dragon, kid, you're gonna have to get used to flying."
I felt my stomach do like twenty backflips in a row. "But," I started, trying to come up with an excuse. "But, what about my wing?"
Then, Cloudjumper jumped down from the top floor with Valka on his back. "Your wing should be healed up," he said. "Good as new, lass. Word of a Stormcutter."
Hiccup removed the splint, then pulled a lever on Toothless's shoulder ring. "Just in case she falls, bud." Toothless nodded. Then he pushed me out the door. We came to a ledge overlooking the ocean, and I recognized it as the one where Hiccup was trying out different tail positions on Toothless and writing them down six years ago. The stump was still there, and there was a wear mark around it from where the rope had cut into the bark when it snapped.
I looked over the ledge. The sea was calm, but, I was afraid of heights, and looking down made me dizzy. I backed up.
"She's gonna need some encouragement," Hiccup said. He nodded to Astrid, who pointed out towards the sea stacks.
"Stormfly! Go!" Stormfly spread her wings and launched off the ledge. Once she got out to the midway point between the ledge and the sea stacks, she hovered.
"Just keep moving your wings up and down!," she shouted at me. I gulped as Stormfly flew back. I crept to the edge and unfurled my shaky wings.
"Okay, okay, I can do this," I said to myself. Then I remembered the first movie. I furrowed my brow, whispering what Hiccup said right before Toothless increased speed: "It's go-time, it's go-time." I backed up, ran forward, and pushed off the ledge. Then I fell. I shot straight into a nose dive. I tried flapping, but somehow I couldn't coordinate those muscles, and so I kept falling. Toothless yelped and leaped after me.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!," I yelled above the wind. "YOU CAN'T FLY ON YOUR OWN!!!" Toothless ignored me, and tensed up. The spines on his back opened up so that there were two rows, and he flung open his wings.
"OPEN YOUR WINGS!!!," he shouted at me. "HUNCH INWARD!!! IT'LL OPEN YOUR SPINES!!!!" I did as I was told. My wings billowed out, and my spines divided. I was headed straight for the sea stacks. I yelped and closed my eyes. When I opened them again, I was flying, on my own, on the other side of the sea stacks. I looked behind me. Toothless was doing the Loop-da-loop and cheering. I noticed that his tailfin was open. So that's what that lever on his saddle does.....
Then, Toothless started to lose altitude and balance. Falling, he shot a fireball at the sky. From afar, I could see Hiccup run and jump off the ledge.
"What is that suicidal madman doing?!," I hissed to myself. I started to flap back to them, but then the most extraordinary thing happened. Hiccup flung out his arms, and two flaps of leather shot out of his sides. A fin opened up on the back, and Hiccup shot toward his dragon. So that's the flight suit Toothless was talking about, I thought. Hiccup grabbed Toothless's saddle and the dragon pulled up right before he hit the ocean.
"WoooHOOOO!!!!," Hiccup whooped. Astrid hopped on Stormfly, and the two dove down towards us, pulling up right as they reached our altitude. Valka and Cloudjumper did the same. Then we all flew up, above the sea stacks. Toothless gave me a sideways, sheepish grin.
"Uh," he said. "I can fly on my own......just not very long......" I laughed, and shot a fireball into the sunrise.
"Oh no," I heard Hiccup mutter. "Come on, again?"
