The Fortress
Tiera woke up startled at first, then realized that was just a dream. Then she noticed Yato, sitting next to her, watching her.
"It's hard to wake you, when you're sleeping," Yato said contently.
while getting up Tiera said, "Sometimes I wish you would." The rest of her siblings were still asleep.
"It's time to go. Are you sure, you're ok about doing this?" Yato asked.
"Yes, I have thought this through."
"Let's get going, then," Yato said.
As they started to leave the Lower World Tiera asked. "Yato, do you know if there's a, gold dragon there?"
"I don't know, I only know that, Shadow is there," Yato said in thought. "Whats with the sudden, interest?"
"I had a dream."
Yato blankly responded, "Dreams always lie, I don't trust them."
"It was to real, like I was talking to him," Tiera said. Yato didn't respond, but seemed interested. "I was in a hominid fortress, and it was cold. Full of cages, he spoke to me. He even knew my name."
"Did you get a name?" Yato asked.
Tiera quickly responded, "No, when I asked he said soon. He was a gold dragon my size, but he had wings already."
After a bit of time had passed before Yato spoke, saying. "We have to go into the village, for food. Be careful some people there are beast hunters."
"Look, it's a not-dragon," said a voice. Tiera had finally located the voice it came from, a small bluebird. In her nest staring down at her.
"A what?" Tiera asked in the simple language of the beast.
"You, a not-dragon," The bluebird said.
"What are you saying?" Yato asked, confused.
"A bird over there, it's claiming I'm a not-dragon. I don't know what it means by that. What else could, I be?"
"You know what it says!" Yato said surprised.
"It's simple beast, dragons have the ability to learn and speak many languages," Tiera responded. Yato was lost in thought now.
"You, a not dragon," The bluebird insisted.
"I am a not a dragon, indeed. I am a drakka," Tiera finally told the bluebird. It fell silent after that.
"We're getting close, so we will need to be more careful," Yato said. As the trees started to thin out, to a small town. "Some people will draw a weapon on you. That's why, i'm going to watch over you. Stay behind me!" She could see the men individually now, there were people running, all over the town, Some were buying things. One in particular, stood out he was a tall hominid, in shiny armour buying arrows from a man in a shack.
"Be ready, the hunters are here already," Yato told her.
"Ok," Tiera replied.
As they entered town, surprisingly people didn't seem notice at first. Yato was looking around at people confused, probably because no one had noticed her yet. As they got up to another shack, she could smell the meats this close to the shack. As Yato talked with the man in the shack, there was a scream from a nearby woman. She started yelling. "Monster, monster help!" She must have noticed Tiera and she ran off. Her screams, were loud enough that the hunters, heard her cry!
Yato drew his sword ready for a battle, along with Tiera preparing for a battle as well. The hunter the shiny armor ran to them with his sword already drawn then asked "Where is it?" Then he noticed Tiera behind Yato.
"You still owe me," Yato said to the hunter in the armor.
"Very well then..." The hunter said putting down his sword. The hunter's companions were there now.
"Come on it's one man and a hatchling we will be rich," One of the companions said greedily.
"If you as much as take another step forward, I will kill you," The armored hunter said to his companion, raising his sharp sword to his companion's throat, it's blade glinting in the sunlight. The others started to inch back, but still watched from a distance.
"I didn't know you were so afraid of a man and a hatchling," The man said. The armored hunter pressed the sword closer and started to draw blood, the hunter's companion flinched.
"Back off," one of the other Hunters called out. "It's not worth it!"
"Fine," the hunter with the sword to his throat said. "Don't expect me to help you at all."
"Fine by me. Now, get out of here." The hunter walked away, pushing the other hunters out of his way. "Do you need anything?"
"Yes, help," Yato said relaxing now.
"How do you need?" Questioned the hunter.
Yato quickly responded, "The fortress."
The hunter had a questionable look but still responded, "You're attacking it?"
"They have a friend of mine," Yato said sadly.
"What do they want with them?"
"She's a dragon."
"What? I guess that would do it," The Hunter said in thought. " When?"
"We were just leaving, we just needed food," Yato said determined.
"Let's get going then."
As they left the town Tiera asked Yato, "What does he owe you for?"
"It can speak Parl already!" The Hunter said out loud.
"It... It, has a name and, It, understands you!" Tiera said infuriated.
"I'm sorry i'm not used to talking to dragons."
"Tiera, this is Tobias and Tobias, this is Tiera," Yato said quickly, as Tiera stared angrily at Tobias.
"So what's the plan?" Tobias asked.
"We hold off most of the bandits as Tiera, goes inside the fourtris though a small hole and releases them," Yato explained.
"Your joking right?"
"I wish," Yato said.
"I like it," Tobias said out loud which shocked Tiera and Yato.
"Are you messing with us now?" Yato asked questionably.
"Either that or he's insane... which is more likely," Tiera said.
"Tiera!" Yato said shocked.
"What i'm just stating the obvious."
"It's ok Yato I don't mind It's actually an honor, for her to even acknowledge me let alone to allow me stand this close," Tobias said.
At this Yato and Tiera just stared at him.
"He's insane," Tiera finally said, confirming her thoughts.
"It's fine Yato, she's probably right, that would be a good reason, why I became a Beast Hunter," Tobias said.
"I will never, understand hominids," Tiera thought to herself.
"Right ... Ok well, we should be getting close now," Yato said.
Tiera realised how much time had passed, she also noticed the trees thinning out and the chatter of the birds had ceased from hominid activity. The ground instead of the natural moist soft dirt of the forest it transformed into scorched wasteland and there in the center was the fortress. As she sniffed the air she could smell reminisce of livestock, dwarves and humans, waste from the poorly kept livestock, and the smell she feared, captured Dragons. There was fear, anger among the dragons.
"By looking at it we will need another plan," Tobias said. "Does anyone have any ideas?"
"I can't think of any, Tiera any ideas?" Yato asked.
Tiera thought for a moment, then asked, "How about a distraction?"
"That was the original plan," Tobias stated.
"Instead of just attacking, distract by talking to them, then when they notice the Dragons, attack," Tiera explained.
"That might work ... I don't like the idea," Yato said nervously.
"Don't worry about me Yato, I'll be fine,"
"Ok, if you feel up to it, go ahead."
Tiera realised the adventure ahead of her, she thought she should be scared but she didn't, it was as if some outside force was helping her.
A Few minutes past, they were ready to begin. As they got closer, she noticed the amount of fortifications that were set up. Yato had Tiera hid near the opening, so when they started she could get in without being noticed.
She was close enough, that she could hear some of the guards talking. One of the guards was complaining, "Why do we have to sit here and watch grass that will never grow?" The guard said infereated.
"We are out here, if someone attacks," another said.
"Who would be stupid enough to attack us," The first one said. The second guard fell silent at that.
She could also barely, hear Yato saying from the forest, "I don't like this," Repeatedly.
Yato and Tobias started walking toward the fortress. Yato surprisingly, was expressionless, and were immediately spotted and drew everyone's attention. All guards on watch, turned their attention to them. Most of the guards started to move over to Yato and Tobias. The guards nearest to Tiera, just turned their attention to the commotion. She dragon dashed to the opening unnoticed.
She went through the hole, it opened up to a large and long hallway. Tiera had no idea which way was to the dragons. She sniffed the air, when she did it was dusty. Worse of all it was heavily traveled by dragons, she couldn't tell which way to go. But someone seemed, to be trying to contact her using mind speech.
"Left," It said to her. She thought she recognized the voice, but couldn't remember where it came from. She followed it anyway, she trusted it.
The room opened out and was full of cages in the walls. She knew the cages where for, Dragons. The room was cold and not well lit. She was startled by a voice in a cage behind her.
"Hello Tiera, I had hoped we wouldn't have to meet like this," The Dragon said from within. It was the same voice as before.
"Who are you?" Tiera asked the dragon. The Dragon stepped forward, revealing a small golden scaled dragon with wings. She remembered now, it was the gold dragon with the wings from her dream.
"Sorry but we are running out of time, your friends can't stall for much longer." Tiera was confused how he knew about them. "Do you remember?" He asked.
"Yes, I'm ready."
He began to empty his fire blatter on the lock, she dragon dashed, and hit her side on the lock. Pain shot up her spine, from hitting the lock and the heat she collapsed on the floor from the pain.
"I'm sorry, I should have known that you were not ready for that. Tiera you don't have to do anything else."
"But what about you and the other dragons?"
"Can you move?" The gold dragon asked, ignoring the question she asked.
With every movement she made the more pain she felt. "Not much," Tiera responded in pain.
The dragon just sighed. "Back away as far as possible," he instructed.
She did as she was told inching back, and with every movement caused more pain, it became excruciating.
"That should be good enough. I'm sorry, you won't have to do anything now," The dragon said.
The chain attached to the dragon's leg started to rattle. This amazed Tiera because the dragon was just standing there with his eyes closed, he seemed to be focusing on something. He started to back up and empty his fire blatter on the thick iron chains then he dashed forward. The chain pulled from the wall along with some stone. The dragon stared at the chain for a moment then moved on to the door emptied more of his fire blatter on the lock and charged at the door hitting it with his shoulder the lock exploded sending pieces of steel flying. The door swung violently hitting the wall.
"Hey!" Came a voice in the stall behind her.
"Don't you ever get any sleep? Isn't it bad enough we have to-" She noticed that it was a small green dragon in the stall but not as small as her or the gold dragon.
"How did you..." The dragon then noticed Tiera on the floor. "And how did you get here. Never mind that, get me out of here!"
"If you watch the entrance for hominids," The golden dragon said making a deal with the other dragon.
"Fine, just get me out of here," The other dragon said annoyed.
The golden dragon rammed the door again breaking the lock and the hinges off the door. It fell uselessly inward
"Can you get this stupid chain off me now!" Said the green dragon impatiently.
"Will you shut up! I don't have to do this," The golden dragon said annoyed.
"Alright."
The golden dragon moved to the back of the other dragon and began to claw violently at the chain eventually breaking it.
"Finally! why couldn't you have done that earlier?" The green dragon questioned.
"It's hard to explain," The golden dragon replied.
"Whatever, i'll do as I promised."
Tiera began to look at her surroundings as the Gold Dragon continued his routine. Other than the large amount or cages for dragons she noticed a small balcony behind her barely big enough for a small dragon to fit though. She also noticed small plaques on each stall they had names most likely of the dragon in each stall. Surprisingly the stall the Gold was in was blank. A sigh from inside the stall that the golden dragon had just opened grabbed Tiera's attention. The dragon to come out of the stall was a blue drake. The drake was cautious to exit the stall. Tiera didn't notice anything unusual until he came fully out. Then she noticed where the growing wings should be there was blood from a wound there instead.
All she heard was the hum of a string and the drake fell with an arrow in his neck. The dragons were surprised then the golden dragon locked his eyes on the hominid on the balcony that snuck in and fired the shot. With his scales and amount of pain he had sustained from releasing the dragons he was very quick. Before she knew it the dragon was already in the balcony and had shredded the archer and glided back down.
He took one last look at the dead drake and continued the process of releasing captive dragons. On the next stall the dragon stared in for a bit and said something to the dragon inside that Teira could not hear. When that stall was opened and he had broken the chain the dragon to come out was a black dragonelle it had to be Shadow.
Shadow laid down and stared at the golden dragon with a raging fire in her eyes as he continued his routine. Her gaze shifted and she noticed Tiera, Shadows eyes soothed to a questioning gaze, Shadow just watched from afar.
Teira layed there for a bit trying to figure out what had just happened. After she had thought she had figured out what had happened. she rescanned the area noticing the floor near the open stalls was covered in gold powder. Then she realized that it was small shards of gold scale.
A group of dragon that were released now helping to free the other captive dragons while others flew out to cause as much devastation as possible. Shadow just layed there watching.
The archer that died must have gotten his knife out before he died because the gold dragon was bleeding from his chest. If he felt any pain he did not show it. He continued to slam his body into the cages.
Once all the dragons were released, Tiera could have sworn the golden dragon was bigger than before. The fortress was in a frenzy with dragons and hominids trying to contain them.
"I'm going to get you out of here and back with your friends." The golden dragon said coated with blood. "Shadow you can stop looking at me like that, if you follow me I can get you back to yato."
Shadow's eyes narrowed but then she gave in and said, "Fine lead the way."
He managed to carry Teira in his sii and carried her with Shadow following behind through endless tunnels. When the sun blinded her she knew it was over.
