Chapter 2: Dragon Heart

Rose sighed as she looked at the building in front of her. And while she knew to come in with low expectations she still couldn't help but be a bit disappointed at the sight in front of her. The building was small and while it looked to be two stories tall it was barely worth being called a guildhall. The building was clearly old, with wood that looked to be rotting away, the windows were foggy showing that they had aged a bit as well.

There was a small wooden sign above the door with the words 'Dragon Heart' carved into it as well as a symbol of a dragon something that Rose could only assume was the guild's symbol. This building looked more like a local business than a guildhall. Then again she wasn't sure why she was expecting much more. This was a no-rank guild and in this world ranks and status was everything. She could even see a small sign on the window saying that they were accepting new members.

"Not much to look at I know, but it's a bit better on the inside," King said as he walked into the building with fairly little thought behind what he was doing. As he did Rose looked at the building before letting out one last sigh before she followed him into the building. When she did she saw people sitting at a few different seats around the guild. There really weren't that many people in the guild, once again showing just how low ranked this guild truly was.

"I can introduce you to everyone if you want?" King offered as he looked at the female in front of him.

"Yeah, that'd be nice," Rose said as she looked at King. She'd have to meet the other members of the guild eventually, so she thought she might as well do it now. At least then she'd know everyone's names, or at least she would if she could remember them all. King nodded hearing this and began to walk her towards the first figure.

A female who appeared to be a few years younger than her sitting at one of the tables, she had bright red hair, deep red eyes, and seemed to be wearing almost exclusively white. White pants, white shirt, white jacket, the only exception to this rule being a deep red crest on the left side of her jacket, the same symbol that was on the building only further proving it was the guild's logo.

"This is Aisha," King said as he looked at the redhead. When he said this the female looked up. "She'll bristle you a bit but don't let that fool you, she's a big softie," King said as he looked at the redhead.

"Softie isn't the word I would use but . . . sure," Aisha said as she looked at the female in front of her. "So are you a new member?" Aisha asked as she looked at the female causing Rose to nod.

"Yeah, I wanted to join as soon as I could," Rose said as she looked at the female in front of her.

"Alright, well nice to have you on board. We're not much at the moment but still, it's nice to have you. The headmaster is out at the moment so you'll have to wait before you get registered," Aisha said as she looked at the two in front of her. When she said this King looked at her.

"Igetis isn't here? Why?" King asked clearly confused by the question.

"He went to see if he could get a few more missions. I think he's putting in for some basic extermination mission," Aisha said as she looked at the two in front of her.

"Speaking of missions mine was bust, newbie here cracked it before I could," King said as he looked at her.

"Nice, at the very least you won't be a no rank starting out. Taking out a former captain might even get you up to rank two, possibly even three if you're lucky," Aisha said as she looked at the female in front of her.

"Rank?" Rose questioned as she looked at the female in front of her.

"Wow, you really are new to this aren't you," Aisha said as she looked at the female in front of her causing Rose to blush a bit with embarrassment. "Well, your rank is kinda like your reputation among other adventurers. The higher rank you are the more well known you are, and the more likely you are to be respected. And on the contrary, the lower rank you are the fewer people will know about you and probably won't care about you," Aisha said as she looked at her.

Rose looked at her intently hearing this before nodded. So theoretically speaking, you could be the strongest person in the world but people wouldn't care if you had a low rank. It's a bit of an odd system but Rose couldn't argue with it. After all most of the legendary heroes she's heard about didn't come about from completing one deed, it only happened after they completed several that they began to truly make themselves known.

"Anyway, thanks for the info," King said as he looked at Aisha before he began to walk away. When he did Rose looked at the redhead in front of her.

"It was nice meeting you," Rose said as she waved at the figure in front of her before she once again began to follow King. As she did she saw him moving towards a male much younger than her, he still appeared to be in his mid-teens actually. He had dark tanned skin, as well as sharp ears showing that he was clearly part elf and if his appearance was anything to go on then Rose would guess that he was a dark elf. He had long white hair that reached past his shoulders and deep yellow eyes. Another detail that Rose noticed was that he had long almost beast-like claws.

"This is Gerardo," King said as he gestured to the male causing him to raise his head.

"Hey," Gerardo said as he looked at the female in front of him.

"He's the highest-ranking guy here other than the headmaster, he's rank forty-five. So he's sort of our heavy-hitter, honestly, I got no idea what he hasn't left us for another guild yet," King said as he looked at the teen in front of him.

"Why would I leave? The guild's small sure, but it's also nice. I don't have a reason to leave," Gerardo said as he looked at the two in front of him. "Anyhow, who's this cutie you got with you?" Gerardo asked with a smile as he gave Rose a slight wink. When he did Rose forced a slightly awkward smile as she looked at him. If he was a bit older Rose might have actually been embarrassed by his comment, but since he was so much younger than her Rose had a hard time seeing him as a man. So she didn't see any reason to be embarrassed, she just felt more uncomfortable than anything.

"This is Rose, she's going to be joining our guild," King said as he looked at her.

"Oh, I see, well at least I'll be able to see you around more," Gerardo said with a smile causing

"Right, well apart from being our strongest member he's also a pretty good cook and makes most of the meals for us here," King said as he looked at Rose.

"I look forward to having you join me for dinner one day," Gerardo once again said in a rather flirty tone. Rose nodded hearing this as they began to walk to another member. Now they were heading towards a blonde, he was a fair bit taller than average and had a rather stalky frame compared to everyone else. He had blonde hair that had been swept to the side and bright green eyes. Even when he was being casual with others Rose could see him wearing bits and pieces of armor.

This suggested that he liked to specialize in heavy weapons, and if the muscles were anything to go on he'd have little to no trouble supporting these weapons. "This is Kemono, he's a much more literal heavy-hitter. The strongest guy I know," King said as he looked at the blonde in front of him. When he said this the male raised the glass he was drinking.

"Nice to meet ya," Kemono said with a smile, he had a surprisingly soft-spoken voice despite his frame suggesting that he'd be a 'larger than life sort of man. But his demeanor seemed to suggest almost the complete opposite.

"Yeah, nice to meet you too," Rose said with a smile as she looked at the male in front of her.

"I'm sure you can tell that he's a pretty nice guy, and he's also into working out. So if you ever want to get stronger and beef up a bit he's probably the guy you want to talk to," King said as he looked at Rose.

"It's not that hard really, it's always a lot easier when you got friends there with you," Kemono said as he looked at the female.

"I'll keep that in mind," Rose said with a smile as she looked at the male in front of her. They then once again began to move to a new figure. However, this one seemed to have a much more mysterious presence around them. They were a bit away from the others and almost no part of his body was exposed. When they got closer Rose was able to see just how far he went to keep himself from being exposed.

He was wearing a black hoodie, with a black and white striped scarf around his neck, black pants, black shoes, and a monochrome mask with a sharp divide down the middle. Half of it being a deep black with white eyes and mouth, and the other being a solid white with black eyes and mouth. Other than that Rose couldn't see any defining features just showing how much effort he put into not making himself known.

The only thing she could see were his hands, which were a deathly pale white, almost as if she were staring at a painting rather than a person with long black fingernails that he let grow out. "It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, my lady," The male said as he looked at her. He would have offered her a hand but most people tended to find that a bit off-putting so he reframed from doing so.

"Yeah, nice to meet you too," Rose said as she looked at the male in front of her.

"This is Capri, he's a newbie like you, and like me, he's a no rank," King said as he looked at the male in front of him. "I don't really know much about him, like I said before you he was our newest member and while he's pretty sociable, he doesn't really like talking about himself," King said as he looked at the male in front of him.

"I doubt I have anything interesting to say about myself. Why talk about myself when I could learn more about you?" Capri offered as he looked at the two in front of him.

"I guess that's true," King said as he looked at the male in front of him before he began to look around for the final member of the guild. It didn't take long for him to spot her and before long King began to move towards the final member. As he did Rose once again looked at the figure in front of her. A female with slightly tanned skin, long purple hair with a single white streak in it that flowed down to her waist that she kept in a rather unusual style.

Most of it had been tied into a large bun, but on either side of her head, she had two long flowing pieces of hair giving her the appearance of having twin tails. She had a slender figure with and decent-sized bust, as well as long pointed ears suggesting that she was also some species of elf. However, the thing that stood out to Rose the most was her choice of clothing. They were extremely revealing, to say the least, she was wearing a purple bra with golden lining, and fashioned loincloth, leaving the majority of her legs exposed, and purple boots that came up to just below her knee.

"This is Yuri, don't let her appearance fool you she likes to fight more than anyone. If you go to Kemono for working-out then you want to go to Yuri for sparing," King said as he looked at the two females in front of him. "Other than that she likes to keep to herself, and is a bit too flirty for her own good," King said as he looked at her.

"I don't know what you're talking about, if you want to get to know me better just come to my room later tonight. I'm sure we'll know a lot more about each other in the morning," Yuri said with a seductive tone as she looked at the male in front of her.

"Thanks, but I think I'll pass on that offer for now," King said as he looked at the female in front of him.

"What a shame," Yuri said as she looked at the male as the two began to walk away. As they did King turned to look at Rose.

"Well then . . . Now that I got you introduced to everyone . . . how about a short tour?" King offered as he looked at Rose. He really wasn't sure what else to do at the moment. After all, he needed to find some way to keep her entertained until their guild master came back. Rose looked at him a bit skeptically hearing this but nodded nonetheless.

"Great," King said as he began to walk her around the building. The first stop was a small door that Rose saw when they had first walked into the building. King slowly walked her over to it and opened the door. When he did Rose walked in and saw what appeared to be a rather simple kitchen, with a few different cooking stations, as well as some storage areas, so could tell one of them was for drinks but she wasn't too sure what the other one said. "I'm sure you can tell, but this is the kitchen," King said as he looked at her.

"Gerardo's supposed to be getting a few spices and seasonings so it won't be so barren later. If you want a meal, then this is the place to come to," King said as he looked at her. Rose nodded hearing this and began to look around the room. Rose walked up to one of the doors and opened them as he began to look in them. When she did she saw several wooden shelves is blocks of ever-ice on them.

It was a freezing section suggesting that this is where they kept any meat that they had as well as any other foods that could be stored. However, at the moment it was surprisingly barren. "That's the freezer, I think Yuri used the last of the meat last night," King said as he looked at her. Rose nodded hearing this and shut the door before turning to look at the male in front of her. King then walked out of the room and began to make his way towards another door.

As he did Rose followed behind him and when they entered Rose saw a few different things. The first was a giant hole in the ground filled with water, with several stands around it some containing towels while others had soap on them. Rose then saw another area with a decorative dragon head on the side. And while Rose wasn't close enough to see it she could only guess that there were several holes on the head's mouth that would shoot out water.

"Washroom?" Rose asked as she looked at the male causing him to nod.

"Yeah, this is the bathing area, and where you'll go if you need to relieve yourself," King said as he looked at her. Rose nodded hearing this and King once again walked out of the room and this time began to walk up the stairs to the second floor. As he did Rose followed behind him a bit curious until they reached the top. When they did Rose saw that the top section had several beds with a desk and small chest separating each one of them.

"Left side is the women's section, and the right side is for the men," King said as he looked at Rose. "There really aren't assigned beds so if you're ever tired just pick one," King said as he turned to look at Rose. "And that concludes the tour," King said as he looked at Rose. There really wasn't much to show so Rose wasn't too surprised by this but even so, she thought there'd be a bit more than just this.

Honestly, this guildhall was more akin to a house than a place to support a guild. They didn't even have an armory or a guild board for missions. There were so many things that they were missing the Rose considered essential for a guildhall. Rose was trying to keep her expectations low but honestly, she was finding it hard to justify the reason why they didn't have some of these things. It really did seem like they were struggling to get by.

King then walked out of the room with Rose and began to head back down to the first floor of the building. "That's all I really got to be honest, I'm not sure when the guild master will be back so we got some time to kill," King said as he looked at the female in front of him. Rose nodded hearing this and walked over to one of the several seats and began to sit down, as she did King sat across from her with a slight smile.

"So, first impression, what do you think?" King asked as he looked at her.

"This place isn't much," Rose admitted as she looked at the male in front of her causing King to nod.

"Yeah, I know, like I said we're nothing special. The only two members we really have that are doing anything are Gerardo and the headmaster. But that's hardly anything to brag about. Then you got people like me and Capri who don't even have a rank yet. And then for the most part the rest of us barely had a rank whenever we first joined.

"I imagine a few people have also left the guild," Rose said as she looked at the figure in front of her.

"I don't know," King said as he looked at Rose. "That's something you'd want to ask some of the others that have been here longer. People like Yuri or Aisha would be able to tell you more about that. But my guess is they probably have had a few people that have joined and then left the first chance they got. It's all part of the course for a no-rank guild like us. People join and then they leave, and if you're lucky they join and stay," King said as he looked at the female in front of him.

Rose nodded hearing this and looked around. She hadn't thought about this until now but if someone were to join the guild and then leave as she planned on doing it would make the goodbye that much harder. Apart from just leaving they also have the thought that you're leaving them for one of their competitors maybe even a rival guild. So it's very possible that the two might end up facing each other in the future.

She'd like to think there would be no hard feelings but that might be a little difficult when the chance of them fighting in a local tournament, or even having the situation escalate into a full-blown guild war. Either one of those possibilities would just make it too hard to not have some feelings of resentment towards the guild. So if Rose wanted to avoid something like that happening she had two options.

The first was to just not leave the guild, which she found a bit unlikely. After all, they were a no-rank guild, the work they got would be scarce, especially when other members of the guild would be trying to do the exact same thing she plans on doing. The number of missions they could do wouldn't be many or at least not without some serious work behind them. It'd be like she was competing with her own guildmates rather than working with them. So this was an option that she really didn't want to consider.

The second, however, was something she'd have to give a bit more thought to. Once she left this guild for another one she could just bide her time until she was able to go to another guild. Just going in between guilds freely until she finally settled into a guild that she felt was worth being a part of. After all, if she was going to become a great adventurer then she'd need to be in a guild just as great as she planned on being.

This option seemed a bit more plausible, but it meant she'd have to be a bit more careful when she decided to leave the guilds as well. After all, while the lower class guilds probably wouldn't care that much about her leaving to pursue a new guild with better opportunities, some of the higher ranking guilds already had existing tension and turmoil. She wouldn't want to leave one guild for another and accidentally set off a guild war, especially if she didn't plan on staying at the new guild she went to either.

Neither option was good but at the moment it seemed like they were the only two that she had. Unless she wanted to stay here most of her life slowly clawing her way up the ranks to get into a proper guild. But by then she'd be too old to properly enjoy it. There were just too many factors working against her for her to not chose to just leave this guild when she eventually got the chance.

"So what about you?" King asked as he looked at everyone. This seemed to snap Rose out of her slight daze causing her to look at him a bit confused.

"What do you mean?" Rose asked as she looked at the male clearly confused by the question that he had proposed.

"Well, I told you about everyone else here. So what about you? What should I tell the next recruit when I get to introduce them to you," King said as he looked at the female in front of him.

"Oh," Rose said as she looked at the male in front of her. "Well I'm nothing special really," Rose said as she looked at the male before trying to think of something that she could tell him that she thought might be interesting. "I like to use barriers, and defensive spells so maybe you could tell them that?" Rose offered as she looked at the male in front of her causing King to nod.

"Yeah, not every day you meet someone who likes to use defensive spells after all," King said as he looked at her. "But I'm sure there's more to you than that, so by the time we get someone else to join us I'm sure I'll have something interesting to tell them," King said with a slight smile as he looked at Rose causing her to nod.

The two then heard the door to the guild open causing Rose to turn and look at the figure that had entered the building. When she did she saw a male in his early to mid-forties walk into the building. He had long unkempt brown hair that had been combed back out and out the way save for one piece that hung in front of his face. He had a muscular frame but not quite to the degree of the blow from earlier, and his clothes seemed to give him an almost noble feel with a white shirt, brown jacket with golden trimmings, a black scarf tied around his neck, and brown clothing.

Rose could also see two guns on his waist. "Ah, he's finally back," King said as he stood up. When he did Rose followed him and began to walk up to the male. "Igetis, we got someone wanting to join up," King said as he looked at the male.

"Oh? Well, that's good," The male said with a smile as he looked at her. "Just follow me and we'll get you signed and registered," Igetis said as he looked at Rose. When he said this he walked past King and placed a small stack of papers on the counter.

"Are these the new mission?" King asked as he looked at the male causing him to nod.

"Yeah, speaking of which how did your mission go?" Igetis asked as he looked at the male in front of him as he pulled out a new piece of paper.

"Rose here beat me to it," King said as he looked at him.

"Oh, I see," Igetis said as he looked at the male before placing the sheet in front of Rose. "Just fill this out," Igetis said as he looked at her. Rose nodded hearing this and began to fill the paper out.

"This quilinboar hunt sounds promising," King said as he looked at the piece of paper in front of him.

"Mind if I tag along? I've been dying for some decent meat lately," Yuri said as she looked at the male in front of her.

"Think I'm gonna have to pass on that one. You're already rank twenty, and I'd like whatever credit I can get," King said as he looked at the piece of paper.

"Oh, in that case, would you mind bringing me back some of their meat?" Yuri asked as she looked at the male in front of her.

"Sure, how much did you want?" King asked as he looked at the female in front of him.

"As much as you can bring me," Yuri said as she looked at the male in front of her.

"Mind if I join in then? Us fellow no ranks have to stick together," Capri said as he looked at the male in front of him.

"Yeah sure," King said as he looked at the piece of paper in front of him.

"What about me?" Rose asked as she looked at the male in front of her. She was more than happy to take whatever mission and pay she could.

"Might as well," King said as he began to fill out the piece of paper. When he did Rose looked up at Igetis and held out her piece of paper. When he did the male grabbed the piece of paper and placed it on a small pedestal. When he did the piece of paper began to glow blue before vanishing. A moment later a small badge with a gem in the center appeared on the pedestal.

"Here you are, you're now a registered member of the guild community," Igetis said as he looked at the female in front of him. "The ranks get updated just about every hour so if you're curious as to what rank you are just press the top button on your badge and it'll tell you," Igetis said as he looked at the female in front of him. When he said this Rose nodded and looked at the badge. She couldn't help but feel her heart flutter a bit at the sight.

To think that this was really happening, it was a dream come true and an opportunity that Rose didn't want to waste. "Now then," Igetis said as he looked at the female in front of him once again gaining her attention. "I'm not sure if any of the others have told you this but when you sign up for a mission you won't be getting all of the reward that you're promised," Igetis said as he looked at the female causing Rose to look at him.

"What do you mean?" Rose asked as she looked at the male in front of her.

"Well, the guild organization center takes ten percent of any earnings that guilds make. So a tenth of whatever prize is being offered will go to them. The only exception to this rule is when they're offering a single item such as a sword. That's the only time that you'll get to keep the whole reward. It's done so that they can keep the organization running smoothly, they need to get money somehow right? And what better way than through the guild that they give missions to," Igetis said as he looked at her.

It did make sense but even so Rose found that a bit surprising. "Of course that only applies to the reward. Any items or treasure you find while adventuring is strictly yours and yours alone," Igetis said as he looked at her. At least Rose could rest assured that most of the reward was going to her.

"Most of us also pitch in around the guild," Aisha said as she looked at Rose. "Of course that's not mandatory, it's your money so you're free to do whatever you want with it," Aisha said as she looked at the female in front of her. Aisha nodded hearing this, if others did it as well then she had no problem pitching in as well.

"Here you go," King said as he handed the piece of paper to Igetis and turned to look at Rose and Capri. "Get ready you two," King said as he looked at the two in front of him. He hadn't planned on bringing either of them to begin so at the moment he didn't want to spend any time waiting on them.
