Chapter 5: Malitia and Alicia
"Don't you DARE EVER scare me like that again!" Kat was nearly in tears as she held me as we sat on a bench in the courtyard. "Don't be so dramatic, Kat. It's just a wrapped arm and some band-aids. It's not like I'm dying, really."
"B-but, you were all dead-fish eyed when you walked into class before you fell. It was scary!" I was about to try and comfort her some more, when the owl from before came flying in. It landed right in front of me, and he had a small letter in his mouth.
Please meet with me at the earliest convenience. Follow your owl when you're ready.
From,
Malitia Odisse
"My owl?" I questioned, looking up from the letter at the owl. His eyes were still big and dilated. I giggled. "Sure, why not? So what should I name you?" I brushed his feathers again and the name Scape flashed in my mind.
"Maybe you should name him Curt, or Martian, or even--" I interrupted Kat.
"Scape." I said, a slack smile on my face.
Kat placed a hand on her chin. "Hm, sounds cool, interesting, and original! I like it!" We giggled. We stood and Scape flew onto my shoulder. "Hey, you." I rubbed his head. "Try not to get you talons in my hair, silly." I turned to Kat and said, "I have to go do something real quick, alright? Send me a message if anything interesting happens while I'm gone." I waved goodbye to her and started to walk in the direction of Malitia's hut.
"Ah! Good, you came. Sit, sit, here, have a scone! Cherry or blueberry?" Malitia sat me down and shoved a plate of scones in my face. I chose a cherry one and took a bite cautiously. "So, did Dumbledore explain everything to you?" I looked at her questionably.
"The book. Did he explain the page you found in the book?" She asked, setting herself in the chair across from me. "Wait. You planted the book next to me?" She rubbed Scape's head and said, "Yes, with the help of your lovely friend here. Have you given him a name yet?"
"Scape." I mumbled. She gave a smile and sighed. "There's no need to be afraid here, child. I wont hurt you." I nodded, and straightened up in the chair. "Then, please, tell me what I am. I want to know."
Malitia's laugh was more of an evil witch cackle. "My dear you are a Light!" She said it in a way that made it sound as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. "A what?"
"A Light. Ancient things they are, but still very alive. Everyone has a Light, some just chose to unlock it while others decide it's not worth even touching. Your mother was like that." I was dumbfounded. "My mother?"
"Aye. She could have unlocked it, if she'd only let herself, but she was afraid. I suppose that's why she's taken away some of your memories."
"My mum-- why would she do that? She's my mother. She'd ne--" I stopped myself and thought back to when I'd had that vision of Scape and I... and the light. "She-she... why would she do that to me?"
"She was afraid that you'd be chosen, and you are." She smiled.
"Me? Chosen for what?!" I'd never been chosen for anything before, let alone some mystic power that was out of my control.
"Did you know, that you're mother's eyes aren't green?" The glint in Malitia's eyes made a shiver run through me. "They're purple, just like yours." I gasped.
"Yes child. Your mother had the purple eyes as well."
"B-but my mother was a Ravenclaw! And the book said that only Hufflepuffs could have this power!"
Malitia cackled again. "Ravenclaw? Martha? Ha! No child. Your mother was one of the truest Hufflepuff this school has ever seen." I was in shock. What else had she lied to me about?
"Do you want me to show you what you've lost, child?" Malitia asked. I nodded. "It will take a while. Maybe even years to regain all you've lost. Are you prepared for that?" I nodded again. "Good." She stood and dusted off her orange dress. "We will meet every Saturday at the earliest convenience. Now, you should go. Don't want to get in trouble no do we?" I nodded dumbly and left with Scape on my shoulder.
"So, what should I do with you? I know I can't put you in a cage, but maybe--" I heard a far away shout. When I looked up the hill, I saw two figures flying in the sky, one chasing the other. Scape took off flying in the direction of the forms, causing me to chase after him. "Scape! Scape! Scape, come back!" By the time I'd gotten to the top of the hill Professor McGonagall shouted, "That's enough, Mr. Weasley. Potter, follow me, now." I snuck into the crowd behind a Gryffindor girl. "What happened?" I asked.
"Malfoy took something of Neville's and started a fight with Potter." The girl answered, her face twisted in anger.
Not again... I looked over at Draco, who was smirking and laughing with the people around him. I looked down, as the others left the fields. This was my next class so I just waited, sitting and leaning up against one of the towers. "Whoo!" Scape cooed as he rubbed his head against my arm. I gave a strained laugh. "I'm okay Scape. Don't worry. I'm sure everything will be fine. Draco must have just been having a little fun. No one was hurt, so no foul... right?"
"Ah! I see we have an early bird here." Madam Hooch was the flying instructor for all first years, so I wasn't surprised to see her here. I gave a small smile. "Yes. I wanted to get here early. It's such a lovely day out."
"Yes, well, since you're here, do you think you could help me set up for the next class?" I nodded, and when I tried to get up, Scape cooed in protest. I'd forgotten that he was a burrow owl. I took out the Hufflepuff scarf I had in my pocket, and created a little cocoon of sorts before placing it onto the ground for Scape to cuddle into. He cooed in thanks and I left him there to help Madam Hooch with the brooms.
"Alright class. Place your arm over the broom and say, up!" We all did as she instructed. Mine came up quick, but not so quick that I couldn't catch it. I giggled slightly as I watched some of the Ravenclaws across from me struggling with the broom. One girl glared daggers at me, and when Madam Hooch left to get a piece of equipment that she'd forgotten, she came over to me.
"What's so funny, Puff-fer-brains?" My smile dropped and I stopped laughing. "Well, out with it, you little Puffer." I tried to stutter an answer but she cut me off. "Do you even know who you're messing with? I'm Alicia Umbridge, and I will NOT be laughed at." She pointed an accusing finger at me.
Kat put her hand on my shoulder. I looked up at her. She was definitely the tallest girl out of all the first years, and without her bright smile, she looked pretty scary. "So what? She was giggling because you're supposed to be smart, but at least half of you couldn't get the broom up, right? Is that not at least a little funny? Would you not be laughing if we Hufflepuffs were struggling?" I'd never heard her voice so dangerous.
Alicia just scoffed. "Please, everyone knows Hufflepuff is just filled with incompetent Mudbloods that can't do any--" A screech rang through the air as Scape launched himself at Alicia. Alicia just swung the boom in her hand and sent Scape flying.
"Scape!" I yelled, hopping onto my broom and going after him. The wind whistled in my ears as I speed to catch Scape. My boom came to a quick hult, almost throwing me. I was about to catch Scape, when another broom came wizing by. It was Alicia. She had Scape by his foot. "So this pathetic thing is you pet is 'e? Well, come and get him then!" She sped off. I speed after her.
"Give Scape back!" I yelled, reaching for my owl.
"Ya know that's another thing. You couldn't come up with a better name?" I'd never felt so angry before. I gritted my teeth and threw all my body weight in her direction. Upon impact she'd let go of Scape, and nearly fell off her broom. Catching Scape, my anger subsided a bit as I watched his eyes flutter open and closed. Poor thing. That must have been so disorienting for him.
"Hey!" I turned just in time to see Alicia come at me with her broom. Since I had no hands on the stick I topped over, thinking I was going to fall to my doom I closed my eyes and waited.
But I never felt the hard earth, instead I felt warm hands catch me. When I saw who it was, I was stricken with horror when I saw it was Madam Hooch. Her yellow eyes were narrowed and I gulped. I was sure she was going to yell at me but she turned her glare to Alicia. "You! You get down here right now, and march yourself to Headmaster Dumbledore's office right this minute!" She set me down and asked, "Are you alright my dear?" I nodded and looked down at Scape. "But Scape isn't! May I take him to the Hospital Wing, ma'am?" She nodded, and then abruptly turned and grabbed Alicia's arm. "Class has ended for the rest of you. Take you're free period in you rooms or the library." She walked brisking with Alicia by the arm.
"Well, come on now. Let's get Scape the help he needs." Kat said. "Man, you go to the Hospital Wing more than anyone should their first year." I gave a small laugh as we made our way down the halls.
"Here, we did all we could. He just needs to be taken back to your room and needs to rest." The nurse said, hand Scape back to me. I quickly took Scape back to my room and then proceeded to head to the Grand Hall. It was nearly dinner time.
"So, how's Scape doing?" A Hufflepuff girl asked. She was one of the girls Kat and I shared our room with. Her name was Marion Domver. We also shared the room with her twin, Natalia Domver. They were short and plump girls. Both had blonde hair and sun kissed skin. With the biggest brown eyes I'd ever seen.
"Scape is doing better now, thanks." I said, giving a smile.
"Ya know, what Alicia did was totally out of line." Natalie said. I nodded.
"Hey," Kat tapped may shoulder. "look over there." She gestured to Draco, who had just entered with his friends on either side of him. "What do you think he's doing?" Marion asked. "I don't know, but looks like he's going to talk to Potter!" Natalie answered.
The Gryffindor table was right next to ours so I caught some of their conversation. I heard Draco say, 'dule', 'trophy room', and 'midnight'. I gasped.
"What?" Kat said. I leaned her head down so I could whisper to her. "I have to go to the trophy room. Tonight at midnight. I'll need you to cover for me." She gave me a quizzical look as I gave her a pleading one. She leaned down to whisper back. "I can't do that. I'm coming with you!" I sighed and nodded at the giant smile she had her face.
"Fine. But keep quiet, please." She nodded so fast, I half expected her to get vertigo. "Alright. What are we gonna do until then though?" I tapped my chin. "Just... go about our day. Normal till the time come alright?"
Kat gave a mock salute and we both giggled.
