Chapter 1: The Letter
"Lady Marchbanks! L-lady Marchbanks!" My maid Marian yelled as she burst into my room, with my mother close behind. "What is it? Is everything alright?" I asked in a frightened voice, but they just looked at me in glee as my mother handed me a cream colored piece of paper. It read:

When I looked on the other page, it gave a list of everything I'd need for the upcoming school year.
"Gwen, my dear, do you know what this means?" My mother asked, placing her hands on my shoulders. I was too shocked to even speak. It came! After thinking that it never would... it came!
"Oh, look at you. My little girl, growing up so fast." My mother was so happy that they smile she wore reminded me the Cheshire Cat's. "Oh! I must tell your father! We'll be celebrating tonight! I wonder if Draco has gotten his. They we can have an even bigger party!" My mother gave a laugh of triumph before going off to call my father and give him the news, leaving me alone with Marian. I sighed.
"Oh, what's wrong deary?" Marian asked, sitting me at my vanity table chair. I handed her my brush and she started to brush my hair. Brushing my hair always helps me think. "Marian, can I ask you something? Girl to girl?" Marian had been my maid since I was able to walk. Her hair is gray, just like her eyes, that hide behind small, half-moon glasses.
"Of course deary. What's troubling you?" I looked at her through the mirror with a little blush on my cheeks and said, "It-it's about Draco." I could feel Marian pause for a moment when I said Draco's name. "And what about Sir Daco?"
"Do-do you think he likes me? I mean, not that he enjoys my company, but LIKES likes me." Marian gave a small laugh. "Deary, Sir Draco would have to be halfway out of his mind to not like you."
"I guess so." I said, thinking about it.
"Now, let's get you ready. Your mother has probably already called the Malfoy's and every one of their friends." She said with a smile.
"Alright." I said smiling back at her. And we started to long process of getting me ready for the ball of a party my mother was throwing.
That night I wore a purple, long sleeved dress. It was my mother's once. She even gave me her black flats. "Wait deary, one final touch." Marian held out a black box. "Lord Malfoy requested you wear this."
I opened the box to find a silver necklace, with a charm in the shape of a dragon that was lying on the moon. When I looked closely it looked like the dragons eyes were closed. As if it were sleeping. "It-it's beautiful." I handed the necklace to Marian and asked her to put it on me. When it was on, I felt a sting in my chest, and when I looked at the dragon, it's eyes were open. They were a yellow color that reminded me of a sunflower's petals.
"Well, come now deary, we don't want to keep everyone waiting." Marian said, as she escorted me out of my room and to the stairs. I'd barely gotten half way down the stairs when I noticed him. Draco was wearing a black suit with a white undershirt and a green tie. His hair was slicked back and his gray eyes stood out with his attire. I was kind of hoping I could sneak in and not make too big of a scene but Lord Malfoy noticed me just as I'd gotten to the bottom of the stairs.
"Ah, Miss Gwendolyn." He took my hand and kissed it. "I see you got the gift. It looks quite good on you."
"Why thank you Lord Malfoy, but may I ask something?" I was hesitant but I had to know... "Why does it have yellow eyes? It didn't when I opened the box and now it does. What happened?"
Lord Malfoy laughed. "It bit you. It's how it now knows that it belongs to you. So no matter where you are, he," he pointed to my necklace. "Can always find you. We wouldn't want you to get hurt now would we?"
"Yes, but-" I was cut off by Lady Malfoy, who had Draco at her side. "Dear." She said. "It's time for the children to start the first dance." Children? Draco and I are eleven years old, we're not children, and before I could make my thoughts known, Draco extended his hand to me.
"Shall we?" He asked, with the slightest hint of a smirk dancing on his lips. I slightly blushed and took his hand. We were the center of attention on that dance floor. Everyone's eyes were on us. When the orchestra started playing, Draco placed his left hand on my hip and his other was holding my hand. I placed my right hand on his shoulder, and we began to move.
I'd only ever practiced with my dance teacher, so I was a little nervous, but I'd never expected it to feel like this. It was like dancing on air. So free and graceful, but the song ended and before I could ask Draco if we could dance again he was tapped on the shoulder. "Excuse me, but may I have a dance with my sister?"
It was my older brother, Bram. He was two years older than me and already in Hogwarts as a Ravenclaw, like mum. His normal shaggy black hair, was combed and slick, so it showed off his bright green eyes. Draco stepped aside, but not before giving me an unreadable sly smile. "So, what did I miss there?" Bram asked placing his hands in their correct places. Being like this reminded me of when we were little and took dance class together.
"What do you mean?" I ask. He jerks his head in the direction of where Draco had left.
"You and Draco were getting real close, and when I asked if I could cut in, your face looked so sad. Could it be little sister, that you really really love Mr. Malfoy? Hm?" He did the eyebrow wiggled that he knew would make me laugh. "Well of course I love him. He's my betrothed. If I didn't love him, well, I think mother would have a fit."
"Yeah, but what if you could choose who you wanted?" I gave a laugh. "You know quite well that I can't, so why would I think about it? It's not like I can be like you and Gabby." It's true. When Bram was born he was allowed to pick you he wanted. Because he was born looking normal...
"Yeah, but-" The song stopped and I separated from Bram. "That was fun Bram, it was nice dancing with you. Now please excuse me." I said, as I quickly made my way to the refreshments table that we had at the back of the room. I sighed as I grabbed a glass and filled it with some red punch. "Are you alright my dear?" A voice asked, causing me to jump slightly. When I turned to see who it was, I was kind of shocked to see Lord Malfoy.
"Y-yes Lord Malfoy. Why wouldn't I be?" I asked, forcing a smile. "It's just that you seemed to have parted from your brother quite quickly." He leaned in. "Did something happen?"
"N-no. Nothing happened, he just asked me a funny question that I'm still trying to figure out." I answered. Even I didn't believe myself. But Lord Malfoy seemed to buy it and left me in the corner of the room, thinking about what Bram had asked me.
