Chapter 34

“Everything will go just fine,” Draco tried to sooth me on Valentine ’s Day, the day that I would break the heart of a totally sweet guy who didn’t deserve to treated that way. “You’ll tell him, comfort him just not too much, then you’ll meet me at the three broomsticks so we can start our Valentine’s Day. Trust me. Everything will be fine.”

I sighed and stopped walking so that way I could look at him properly. “I’m going to break his heart. How will everything be okay for him, Draco? Fred is really sweet and caring despite his irresponsibility with decision making. Draco, I’m going to break his heart and chop it into a million tiny pieces. He loves me. I don’t think I can do it.”

He kissed me on the forehead. “You have way too kind of a heart, Court, but I guess that’s one of the many things that I love about you. As I said, everything will be just fine. Now, go,” he kissed me on the forehead on last time before I walked away from him and joined Kam and Hermione in the crowd of people at the bottom of the stairs in the Entrance Hall.

“Hey,” Kam smiled at me. “So, what are you two doing for V-day.” She nudged me in the side with her elbow. “It isn’t called V-day for nothing you know,” she then wriggled her eyebrows in the most unattractive way that I just had to laugh.

“I actually have no idea what we’re doing. He just told me to meet him at the Three Broomsticks when I get finished tearing Fred’s heart out of his chest,” I smirked at the two.

Hermione’s mouth was hanging open. “You’re breaking the heart of one of your best mate’s brother’s hearts on Valentine’s Day just so you can be with a deatheating scoundrel like-“

“Hermione!” Kam shrieked. “You really need to shut or mouth from time to time. I’m sure a know-it-all like you should at least know that much.”

“Kamrynn, you know very well that it’s dangerous for Courtney to be with-“

“Oh!” Kam shrieked yet again. “For the brightest witch in our year, you sure are a dumbass sometimes. You know that, Hermione?”

I couldn’t help but laugh. That’s Kam for you. At least she stopped Hermione from getting too loud or saying Draco’s name out in the public where anyone could hear her. Then where would I be? My secret would be found out. Draco’s secret would be found out. The shit would really hit the fan after that little scene, and I didn’t want to be anywhere near when that happened.

“Well, I’m sorry for stating my opinion. Apparently, it means absolutely nothing!” Hermione yelled, causing everyone to look our way.

“Herms,” I said and playfully tugged at one of her curls. “You opinion means the world to me, just not in a place where everyone can hear you. You do that that would be just as dangerous for me, right?”

She nodded in defeat. “I guess you’re right.”

“What is this? Hermione admitting that someone else it right,” Kam laughed and playfully punched Hermione in the arm. “Besides,” Kam then said to me, “she’s just got her panties in a knot because she doesn’t have a date this lovely Valentine’s day.”

“What?! I do not care whether I have a date or not. I don’t need a date to feel complete because I am the coolest girl in the whole wide world, Kamrynn. Yes, that’s right. Even cooler than you!” Hermione laughed as she poked Kam in the arm.

Kam just shook her head at Hermione. “You know how stupid you just sounded right there? Besides, you can’t be cooler than me. That’s just not possible, bookworm.”

“Wait a sec,” I said, looking from Kam to Hermione. “Why aren’t you two fighting as usual? I mean, I think that it’s fantastic that you two have settled your differences, but what the hell happened?” It was just so weird to think about those two actually being friends. You know what I mean?

“We took a moment to think about why we were fighting and it all came down to one reason-“

“Ron!” Kamrynn squealed and interrupted Hermione. “We both had a huge crush on him. Well, she still does, and I don’t.”

“Which is why we came to the conclusion that-“

“She can have him,” Kam smiled. “We actually have a lot in common that’s why we both liked the same guy. She’s like the best mate I never had!”

I narrowed my eyes at her. “And what am I? Chopped liver?”

She laughed and pulled me in for a hug. “You’re the sister that I never had. That’s better than a best mate, eh?”

I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, nice cover up. What’s next? You’re going to become a counselor?”

She laughed. “Oh, hell no. Can you imagine me as a counselor? I’d be punching the poor kids and telling them that their just wimps who need to learn how to take their problems like a man, even if they’re a girl. I’d be a total nightmare.”

“I was being sarcastic,” I added but she didn’t seem to hear me because we were heading out the doors and into the snow covered world, which made me pull my scarf tighter around my neck.

With a sigh, I headed to Zonko’s where Fred would be waiting outside for me. He told me that he had to check out the competition as well as check out a place for their business in Hogsmeade. He was there as he said and his whole face lit up. I started walking over to him at a slower pace then. The guilt was catching up with me just seeing his face.

“Hello, beautiful,” he said and he leaned in.

I gulped as his lips were moving towards mine. I should’ve stopped him. I should’ve done a lot of things just then, but I was too shocked to move. When his lips met mine, I was expecting the same thing that I had felt when I had kissed him just two months before, which was hope for a better future, but I didn’t. I didn’t feel anything. Nothing. Nada. Zip. It was like kissing my best friend who was also my brother. Weird, right? I pulled away from him quickly and looked around.

“So, how have you been?” I asked, looking everywhere but at him.

He sighed. “I’ve been great. I hope that you have been well.”

“I’ve been more well than you can imagine,” I smiled but, again, not at him.

“Good to hear it. Do you want to take a walk through that building with me?” he pointed at the abandoned building across the street from Zonko’s.

I nodded. “Is this the place you’re thinking of opening as a second Wheezes?”

He smiled and opened the door for me. “We really are. We’ll probably get a lot of business here as well as Diagon Alley. I just feel sorry for Zonko’s. I mean, they are the inspiration for us becoming pranksters, you know.”

“Really now? Well, I know you two would run them out of town if you opened straight across the street from them. That wouldn’t be very fair, now would it?” I laughed, but it was just nervous laughter. I knew how it would end.

“I know that. Why do you think we’re doing it?” he laughed. “But, seriously, what do you think of the building?”

I took a moment and looked around. There was holes in the walls, the windows were cracked and broken, the stairs were lopsided, and the floorboards were sticking up in odd places. What did I really think about that building?

“I think it needs a lot of work,” I eventually answered.

He nodded. “Yes, but that’s why it’s cheap.”

“Fred,” I said, knowing that I had to do it fast or I would never do it.

He looked at me. “That’s right. We do have to talk. You didn’t come here to help me shop for buildings. So, what is it?”

I sighed. “Well, it’s about us, Fred.”

“What about us? I was pretty sure that our ‘trial’ relationship was going swimmingly. You know that I didn’t mean to reply that late. Is this what this is about? If it is, I’m sorry, Court. Hell, I’m sorry even if this isn’t what it’s about.”

I licked my lips. “No, it’s not about that. We can’t go on with our ‘trial’ relationship, Fred. I just don’t love you enough to keep it going. I’m so sorry, Fred.”

He nodded and looked down. “I should’ve known that was coming. I thought this second chance was going to work out proper this time. You know,” he looked up at me with tears glistening his cheeks, “I thought that we were going to be together forever!”

And I did it. I broke his heart, and on Valentine’s Day! I was the worst person to ever walk the Earth. I started crying myself and called out his name. He looked up at me with a smile on his face. He then started laughing.

“What the hell?” I asked through my tears. “Why are you laughing?”

“I got you,” he kept laughing. “I can’t believe that I got you. I can’t believe that you fell for that stupid line. ‘I thought we would be together forever!’ Boohoo. That was hilarious, Court!”

That when I slapped him across the face. “You evil Ginger!”

He just kept laughing. “Hey! Only another Ginger can call another Ginger, Ginger!” he playfully whined but grabbed the side of his face. “Man, that hurt! No wonder why Harry chose you as beater. You’ve got an arm on you.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “Haha. Why Fred? Why aren’t you even phased that I broke up with you? Is this your way of coping with pain? You turn it all into one big joke.”

He stopped laughing at looked at me. I mean, really looked at me. “No, Court. I just thought it would lighten the mood for what I have to tell you is all.”

I crossed my arms over my chest. “What is it you have to tell me? Because I’m sure it won’t make me as angry as you have me right now.”

He nodded. “Okay, right. Well,” he paused. “I’m not in love with you either.”
