Rapunzel took a deep breath and closed her eyes. She had to build up her courage before she knocked on his door. She couldn't show any signs of being nervous. She didn't want to worry him.
She let out a long, slow exhale then gently tapped her pale knuckles amazing his wooden door. She opened her eyes when she heard the door unlocking. He stood in the doorway, beaming at her. "Hi, Rap. Come on in." Eugene greeted, opening the door a bit wider.
"Thanks." She gently smiled, entering his apartment. She bit on her lower lip, glancing around at the place. It was just like she remember. He had bookshelves covered in worn out books ranging from unsolved crimes and classic romances.
That was one of the few things they had in common. They were both book freaks, constantly reading every book that could get their hands on. Which, funny story, was how they met in the first place.
Eugene and Rapunzel were obviously meant for each. They fit together like puzzle pieces. Her awkward curves somehow fit inside his jagged sides. It was so perfect, that some days Rapunzel thought she was dreaming every time they were together. Every second, she was so deep in thought around him.
Max ran up to her, jumping up in her legs. "Who's a good boy?" She softly asked, rubbing his head. He barked as she gently pushed him off her. He trailed behind her, panting like crazy.
"I just have to fix my hair, babe, then I should be ready to head out!" Eugene called from the bathroom. Rapunzel hummed as she slowly nodded her head. God, this was so awkward. She didn't know what to say.
Why couldn't she just come out and say it? If she wanted him to know how she really felt, she had to tell him. She had to clean everything up, and soon. If she didn't, hell would break loose and she could lose Eugene, for good.
She spotted the picture they took together two weeks ago, which was now framed and sitting on his favorite bookshelf. He had never came out and said it was his favorite, but she could always tell.
She gently traced her fingers against both of their faces. They looked so happy. She wanted to be like that all of the time, not just when she would catch a glance of him before the curtain would fall. "Ready to go?" Eugene asked, making her jump.
She quickly turned around, brushing her brown hair behind her ears. "Sorry," she quickly apologized, shaking her head. "Yeah, yeah. I'm ready to go." She quickly added.
Eugene looked her over, quickly spotting that something was wrong. She had a fake smile plastered on her face and she looked like she wanted to get out of his presence immediately. "You alright?" He questioned.
"Well, yeah. Why would you ask?" She replied, her voice slightly shaking as he walked towards her. He furrowed his eyebrows, looking into her sparkling green eyes. She felt her cheeks heating up as his eyes traveled across her face.
"Raps, you're looking a little hot. Are you sure you're okay?" He pressed, brushing her loose strands behind her ears. She shrugged her shoulders, hoping she could sound more convincing this time.
"I guess I'm just a little jumpy. Really, I'm fine." She lied. She gave him a hopeful smile, but she immediately could he could see through it as he looked back into her eyes.
"Rapunzel, come on," he whispered, beginning to frown. "Don't lie to me. Tell me what's bothering you." He begged, sadness growing in his brown eyes. He didn't understand why she wasn't talking to him. That was what they always did best.
She let out a long sigh, looking to the floor. She didn't want to speak. She didn't want to see his face when she told him about her predicament. She didn't want to watch his bubble up in anger or get his heart crushed. "Rapunzel, I don't want to play these games anymore. Just be honest with me. I won't get mad." He softly promised, wanting to see her eyes again.
She could feel his eyes burning the top of her head. She took a quick deep breath and looked back into his gentle brown eyes. She gulped, feeling a bit of courage. "Eugene, we can't go out tonight." She answered.
"Why not? Are you sick?" He asked, his hands now on her shoulders. She shook her head, feel the pressure building up behind her eyes. She wanted to let it out, but she had to be strong.
"It's just...that...well we have to hide from the outside world." She replied, trying to find the nicest way to tell him this.
His eyebrows furrowed, quickly becoming confused by her answer. "Why? Is it my fault? Are you embarrassed of me?" He quickly questioned, afraid that it was all his fault.
"No, no," Rapunzel quickly denied, shaking her head. "It's nothing like that, Eugene. It's just that, well, I haven't exactly broken up with Jack yet." She stuttered, rubbing her left hand up and down her right arm.
"What?"
Rapunzel nodded her head, soft tears beginning to roll down her cheeks. She wanted to shout her love from the rooftops and let the whole world know that she was in love with Eugene Fitzherbert, but she couldn't.
She began to pace around the room, feeling like her throat was tightening up. "I just can't hurt Jack's heart. I know him so well and I know this would crush him. Plus I haven't found the right time to break the news to him." She explained, constantly having to stop and clear her throat.
"Are you saying you want to keep us a secret?" Eugene questioned, anger present in his voice. "Are Jack's feelings are more important than mine?"
She turned around, her face now a splotchy red. "Eugene, that's not what I meant. I don't want to hide us away. I don't want to live our love in hiding, but we have a homeless love." She fired back.
"A homeless love? What does that even mean? Why can't you just break up with him?" He exclaimed, raising his voice. Why didn't she just leave Jack? He was the ex, not Eugene! Why didn't this process through her brain?
"Because now we're close friends! Have you ever tried to break off a friendship?" She shouted back, her emotions getting the best of her. Eugene wasn't hearing her out. He didn't know what she was going through.
"How can your boyfriend be your best friend? That doesn't make any sense to me right now, Zel." Eugene replied, begging to pace around the room. She crossed her arms, watching the anger bubble up inside of him.
"I think of him as my best friend while he thinks of me as his girlfriend. Somehow, I have to tell him that we're only friends. I just don't know how! I need time!" She cried, her voice echoing around the room.
Eugene huffed above her, the vein pulsing on his temple. His mouth continued to open and shut, his face showing that his thoughts were changing as he thought about what to say.
Before she could react, his lips were on her. They got caught up in the moment, both of them feeling magnetic shocks as they touched each other. It remind her of the kiss they shared that night in the dance floor.
Suddenly, he pulled away, staring down at her. "Don't deny that you felt something," he stated. She nodded her head, wanting to taste his lips again. She wanted to feel his hands on her waist again. "Rap, I can't hide our feelings. Don't come back here until you break up with Jack." He explained.
She looked down at the floor. "I love you, but I'm not going to be a part of this twisting love triangle. I'll be waiting for you." He softly added. She slowly walked towards the door, giving him one last glance.
"I'll be back soon. I'm not sure when. But someday, I'll be here knocking at your door. On that day, I'll be yours." She answered as she looked at him in the doorway. She nodded her head, determination plastered on her face before she shut his door. She would be back someday.
