Rapunzel walked out of her apartment, remembering to lock the door. She pushed back her short brown hair out of her face. As she turned around, she spotted the man she'd been avoiding. Eugene. She forced her green eyes to the ground and turned the other way, making it obvious that she was ignoring him. "Hey Rap!" He called as he chased her down. She quickly picked up her pace, trying to beat him to the elevator.

He hopped in behind her, pressing the ground floor. An awkward tension in began to fill up in the old elevator. Rapunzel tapped her foot against the carpet, trying not to make eye contact. Eugene whistled a light tune, wishing he wouldn't have hopped in with her.

"Eugene-"
"Rapunzel-" They started together. They quickly clamped their lips shut, embarrassed about speaking together. They nodded heads at each other, signaling for the other to go first. As their faces began to turn crimson, the elevator dinged. The doors opened and they practically sprinted out, turning in opposite directions when they walked out the front door. They covered up their faces from the cold air, blowing against their bare skin on the freezing January morning. They walked down the crowded sidewalk, each on their way to work.

Rapunzel entered her apartment and leaned against the door, falling to the floor. She was exhausted after another long day of work. She peeled her heavy purple coat off her petite body, hooking it on her coat rack. She unraveled her scarf, tossing it on the back of her couch. She kicked off her black heels then plopped on her couch. She shut her green eyes and rubbed her temples.

She quickly sat up, panting. She checked her clock, reading 11:24 pm. She must have fell asleep. She looked the coffee table beside her, spotting her blue chameleon. He must have woke her up. She smiled and picked up the frighten reptile. "Hey Pascal. I bet you're hungry."

She wandered into the kitchen, making him a midnight snack. He quickly ate it up as she walked to her curtains. As she was pulling the green curtains back, her eyes caught something familiar. She abruptly stopped and stared. Eugene did the same. They made eye contact, each unsure what to do. He gave a small wave as she slammed them shut. She couldn't deal with him, not now.

God, why was he so stupid? Years ago, they were a happy couple. Sure, they only dated for about a year, but he still had feelings for her. In all honestly, his feelings were only growing. Every time he saw he, he died a little on the inside. But he wasn't worth her time. She obviously didn't want to talk with him anymore.

He walked to his bedroom with his dog, Max, right behind. Max could be a pain in butt, but he meant no harm. He just liked making sure his master was okay. Eugene plopped onto his bed as Max jumped up beside him. Eugene smiled and rubbed his head, making the dog bark. Suddenly, his master frowned. Max laid his head on his lap, looking up into his eyes. He whined, feeling his best friend's sadness.

Eugene chuckled, knowing Max wanted to know what he was thinking about. "Max, do you think she still loves me?" He asked the dog. Max didn't move, wanting to hear more. He didn't know what Eugene was talking about, but it seemed important if it involved love.

"I...I still love her. I just wish we could be together again, ya know. Do you think she would take me back if I told her I'm ready for a real relationship?" Eugene continued. Max barked and wagged his tail. "Do you think I should tell her my feelings?" Eugene asked. Max barked again and jumped off the bed. He ran towards the door and scratched at his leash.

"Okay buddy. Let's go talk to her. The worst thing that could happen is that she says no, right?" Eugene smiled. It might have seemed like he was talking to Max, but he was really trying to give himself a pep talk. Eugene bundled up so that he would look like he was taking Max for a walk in the cold streets.

Rapunzel stood up and stretched. She yawned and walked to the door. Who would come to her apartment this late? She opened the door and her eyes went as wide as a dinner plates. "Can I come in, quick?" Eugene asked. Too tired to refuse, Rapunzel opened the door, letting him and his dog in.

Rapunzel crossed her arms across her chest, trying to cover up her bare skin. She was only in a tank top and shorts. It might be winter, but her bedroom was always unusually warm. "Would you like some coffee?" She offered as she sprinted to the machine, starting it up. This was awkward.

"No thanks," Eugene refused. Max growled and smacked his legs with his tail. "I mean, that would be lovely." Eugene quickly changed. Rapunzel softly giggled, taking out two mugs. After she made them some coffee, they sat down at the table in the dark kitchen. Their only light source was the light pole right outside her window.

"So, what did you want to talk about?" Rapunzel questioned. Eugene nervously smiled and rubbed the back of his neck.

"Do you ever think about us?" He blurted out. Suddenly, the room became deadly silent. No one moved or breathed. You could hear a pin drop. After a couple minutes, the silence started to become too much, almost burning Eugene's ears.

"Yes," Rapunzel softly replied as she stared off into the distance, trying not to make eye contact. "Do you?"

"Of course, I've never stopped thinking about you." Eugene quickly answered. She closed her eyes, scrunching her face. She didn't want that answer. She still had feelings for him, but there was an issue.

"I was afraid you'd say that." Rapunzel frowned as she stirred creamer into her coffee. What was she supposed to say? How would she let him down gently?

"Afraid?" Eugene scoffed. That definitely wasn't an answer he was expecting. Honestly, he wasn't expecting to be even invited inside this late at night.

"Eugene, I'm dating Jack." Rapunzel replied. His face dropped. Of course she would have already moved on. He wasn't something to wait for.

"Like from down the hall?" He questioned. His throat was drying up. He was in love with someone else's baby. Did she love Jack like she loved him? Was this a serious relationship? She nodded her head slowly, thinking about her current boyfriend. "Oh, well, I guess I better go then." Eugene mumbled as he stood up from the table.

"Wait," Rapunzel called. He stopped with his hand on the doorknob. What was she going to tell him now? He wanted to get out before the tears spilled. "You said you've never stopped thinking about me. What did you mean by that?" Rapunzel interrogated.

Eugene turned around, locking his brown eyes with her sparkling green ones. Her pink lips were in a tight line, obviously fighting with her emotions. Who was she going to pick? "I never stopped thinking about that time I kissed you back on that dance floor down the block. I never stopped thinking about how we used to hold hands as we walked down the street. Rapunzel, I came her to tell you my feelings. I came here to tell you that I love you," Eugene confessed. Rapunzel stood in shock. "But, that can't happen."

"Why can't we be like that?" Rapunzel questioned, tears beginning to fill in her eyes. Why was he walking out on her again? First he admitted his feelings and now he was just going to leave her in shock.

"You're with someone else. Someone that loves you just as much as me and you probably love him back. Goodnight, Rap." Eugene turned around, figuring she would pick her current boyfriend over him. He was just a neighbor, an old love and nothing more.

As he exited the room, her voice broke through his thoughts. "I love you," She softly replied. He snapped his head around, wondering if he heard her correctly. "I've been wanting to tell you for years. I've just never had the courage. Eugene, we can be like that, like we used to be." Rapunzel smiled, placing her hand in his.
