The Chain
The Chain by Fleetwood Mac
So I've been obsessed with Fleetwood Mac recently and
I gotta do this oneshot hahaha
The two of them peacefully sit on the hillside, a soft breeze rustling their hair. This isn't anything out for the ordinary for them. They've been know to be eccentric since the dawn of time. It was only fate that they had found each other.
"I can't wait for nature's morning show." Eugene says, wrapping his arm around her shoulders and pulling her close. She softly sighs, laying her head on him.
"I have to admit, starting my mornings like this does make the day easier to deal with." Rapunzel replies, smiling up at him.
"It has nothing to do with the sunrise though, right? It's all because of me." He smirks, making her laugh and toss her head back. God, how he loves hearing her melodic laugh. It's something no instrument could ever replicate. It's like angels singing and wind chimes tinkling combined into one beautiful symphony.
"Sure, Eugene. If that's what helps you sleep at night." She grins, gently patting his chest.
"It's definitely because of me." He shrugs, looking back out into the distance as she giggles in his arm. The sun is just beginning to peek behind the horizon, its dull colors just waking up.
Soon, the sun paints the sky with vibrant colors ranging from the lightest pink to deepest shade of purple. Eugene looks down, seeing the sun casting its glorious rays on his love's soft face.
She looks up, her eyes greener than emeralds. She innocently bats her lashes, confusion slightly present on her chubby face. "What?" She asks, stirring him from his admiration.
"I just can't get over how you look in the morning." He says, his mouth running before his mind.
She blushes, her eyes casting to the ground. "Stop." She smiles.
He reaches his free hand into his pocket, rummaging through it to pull something out. He tightly holds it in his palm, hiding it from her eyesight. "I want to give you something."
"Like what?" She asks, her eyes on his fist. What could he possibly be holding?
"Just something for you to think of me by." He says, holding it out to her. In his hand is a bracelet made of small links. It reminds her of a chain. It isn't the best looking gift she's received, but it's from him. It's from her Eugene.
"I love it." She coos, her fingers lightly tracing it in his palm. She holds out her wrist, her green eyes meeting his brown ones. "Put it on."
He chuckles, obliging to her demands. "I hope you aren't thinking of it like an engagement ring or something. But I'd rather have you think of it like that than something childish like a promise ring." He says as he hooks it on her wrist.
"Then how should I think of it?" She says, softly smirking.
He lets out a huff, furrowing his eyebrows in thought. "Like a chain of some sort. It keeps us connected to each other."
"Well, where's yours?" She's asks, her eyes glancing at his wrists.
He smiles, pulling out his chain. "I didn't want to put it on in case you hated it." He chuckles before snapping it on his own wrist. Once it's on, he looks over at her again. "You break this and we're through. I guess that's kind of what it's implying. Then we don't have to go through that weird stage, ya know? If we were to ever. . ." He trails.
"I would never break the chain." Rapunzel smiles, holding her hand over his chain.

The wind rattles against the house. Outside, the sky is starting to darken. The sun begins to settle under the horizon, taking its brightness and replacing it with uneasy gray and black.
Rapunzel hides in the shadows, not wanting to stand up and turn on a lamp. She isn't sure what to do exactly. Things feel weird. They feel wrong. She isn't sure where to start trying to fix the problem, but she knows things aren't like they used to be.
She jumps as the front door opens. "Why are you sitting in the dark? Turn on a light." Eugene grumbles, entering the house. He slams the door behind him, kicking off his shoes.
Silently, Rapunzel pulls the cord on the lamp beside her. A soft orange fills the space around her. Tension builds as their eyes meet. "How was work?" She asks, hoping to start a conversation.
He shrugs, entering the kitchen.
She lets out a breath she didn't know she was holding in. What is happening? Why does she feel like she doesn't even know him? Hell, she feels like she doesn't even know herself.
When he returns, so does the tension. "Why are you acting like I'm going to hurt you?" Eugene asks, startling her.
"What do you mean?" She asks, suddenly conscious of how she was sitting. Is she giving off a strange vibe? Is it obvious that she feels uncomfortable?
"You're sitting like my mother used to when my father came home." He slowly replies, his brown eyes studying her. "You know what he did to us when he came home."
Rapunzel nods her head. She does know. After about a year into their relationship, Eugene had finally spilled about his past. How his father would beat him and mother over any little thing. She can't imagine how horrible that must have been.
"Rapunzel, what's going on?" He asks, worry on his face.
"Nothing. Everything is fine." She assures, standing up and walking to him.
"No. You're a terrible liar." He says, shaking his head as he takes a step back. "Something is very wrong. I can feel it."
She holds her breath, unsure what else to say. She knows that something is wrong, but she doesn't know exactly what herself.
Suddenly, his brown eyes widen. "Your chain." He says, pointing at her wrist.
Immediately, she covers it with the other hand.
"You took it off. You broke it." He exclaims, storming towards her.
"It's not like that." She fires back as he snatches her wrist to hold and look at closer.
"Damn you." He spits, tears pooling in his eyes.
"Eugene, it's not what you think." She cries, grabbing at her chest. "I just couldn't wear it. It felt like fire burning my wrist with what I was feeling."
"Well, what are you feeling?!" He shouts, gesturing at her.
"I don't know!"
"Damn your love! Damn your lies!" He screams. "You know exactly how you feel. You know you don't feel the same way about me anymore and that's why you took it off. There's no other reason."
She hangs her head, covering her face with her hands. Her sobs escape her, echoing around the room as he paces in fury in front of her. Damn the dark surrounding him. Damn the light surrounding her.
"Do you love me?" Eugene suddenly asks, getting her attention.
"What?" She croaks, peering at him with tear stained cheeks. He surprises her by having tear stained cheeks as well. They both look like crying fools.
"Do you love me?" He repeats. "Easy yes or no."
"Eugene, it's not that easy." She begins, but he holds up a hand, cutting her off.
"If you don't love me now, you will never love me again." He spits, his head turned away from her. She nearly chokes on her words, his response ringing in her head. "Now, do you love me?" He asks again.
She stutters over what to say. She can't lose him, not like this. Not after so long. They've been through everything together. Her losing her father and him getting a new job.
But she can't lie to him.
"No. Not right now." She answers.
And without a second word, he grabs his stuff and leaves. They can't hold eye contact with each other as he brings his belongings to his truck. Somehow, both of them are able to keep their tears silent.
And as he leaves their house, one sentence keeps repeating in both of their heads over and over again. It's like a broken record that won't shut up.
Chain keep us together.
Chain keep us together.
Chain keep us together.
