Safe & Sound (Toy Story)

Safe & Sound sung by Taylor Swift

"Andy, you're fifteen. I think it's time for you to decide what toys you want to keep and what toys you can do without." His mother sighed, placing her hands on her hips.

"But, Mom," Andy groaned, rolling away from his computer. "It's not like they're in the way. They're packed in the chest, it's fine."

Woody and Buzz made eye contact, both knowing what was going to happen next. Andy wasn't going to win the fight. He never did. Today, they were going to lose some of their closest friends, well, more like some of their family.

"Andy," she breathed, shaking her head. "I'm not going to fight you on this. I want it done by three." She declared before she left the room. Andy mumbled something under his breath as he rolled back to his computer.

"Woody," Jessie began, jumping towards him. "What are we going to do?" She asked, now sitting beside him.

Woody furrowed his eyebrows as everyone huddled close together, fear growing on their faces. Some trembled while others gnawed on the inside of the mouths. He let out a sigh, shaking his head. "There's nothing we can do but wait." He confessed.

"We'll be okay," Bo stated, her face full of determination. "I trust Andy. He would never leave us now." She nodded, her hand grabbing onto Woody's as her blue eyes stared into his brown ones. He softly smiled at her, thankful for her sense of comfort.

She smiled at him, placing a kiss on his cheek then grabbing onto Buzz's hand. Buzz grabbed Jessie's then others followed suit, linking together. Gentle silence filled in the space. No words were spoken.

Before they knew it, the wheels rolled across the floor, stopping in front of the chest. Everyone dropped, going back into their toy state. Light shone into their eyes as the chest was opened.

Andy grumbled to himself as he grabbed the cardboard box from the ground and placing it on his lap. He grabbed Woody and Buzz, placing them on the table, out of the way.

Andy reached back in, placing most of the gang beside them. Every time another toy was added, weight was lifted off their shoulders. Soon, almost everyone was accounted for.

Suddenly, they watched Etch get tossed into the box. Everyone restrained themselves from gasping in horror. They never would have guessed for him to go.

Next was Wheezy. They listened to Andy give him one last squeeze before he was placed inside with Etch. Woody was suddenly filled with instance grief. He had risked everything for the penguin years ago. Woody saved him from a yard sale and even got stolen because of it. But this time, there was nothing he could do but lay and watch.

A few more toys were added, like a few building blocks and a couple of Lincoln logs. It seemed to go for hours, watching the teen pick which toys were worthy enough to stay and which ones hadn't earned a spot in his heart.

Soon, it seemed as if the chest had been picked clean. Nearly every toy had been given their fate. Andy reached in one last time, holding Bo Peep carefully in his hands. He argued with himself over what to do. He would bring her toward the desk, then back to box over and over again.

After holding their breaths, they watched him gently place her and her sheep in the box, giving them a corner to themselves. Andy shut the box and stood up from his chair, heading towards the door.

When he was out of sight, Woody sat up, and reached out towards her. "Bo!" He called out, crawling toward the edge of the desk.

"Woody! No!" The others shouted, grabbing onto his shoulders, pulling him back.

"You don't understand, I have to get to her!" He argued, trying to pry their fingers from his shoulders. He turned around, seeing their grieving faces. "She, she needs me. Andy's making a huge mistake." He stuttered.

They lowered their heads, no one wanting to speak. They didn't want to see this day. The day Bo was ripped from Woody's fingers and there was nothing anyone could do.

"Oh, Woody." Jessie breathed, tears present in her eyes.

"I can save her. I, I can go get her just like I did with Wheezy and, and she'll be safe." He continued, his voice shaking as he spoke.

"There's nothing we can do, Woody," Buzz replied, his heavy voice filling the room. "She's gone."

He sat down. Woody's face lowered. He tucked in his knees and hid his face from the world. He wanted to be alone. He wanted to grief in peace. His hat covered most of his face as silent tears fell.

The toys were placed back into the chest, no one speaking. Woody had claimed a corner and everyone gave him space to be alone and think. Bo and him had never been apart. They were always seen together since anyone could remember.

"What are we going to do?" Rex quietly asked, though it was easy to tell Woody wasn't listening.

"What do you mean what are we going to do? There's nothin' we can do!" Mr. Potato head exclaimed, tossing his arms at the green dinosaur.

"But Woody's so sad. He's never been like this." Rex defended, looking to the ground.

"Not even when he was put on the shelf." Slink agreed, his tail drooping at the sight of their friend.

"Well, he lost Bo. Did you expect him to act any different?" Hamm fired back.

"No."

"Then why does it matter? Let him grieve in peace!" Mr. Potato head shouted.

"Guys, knock it off." Buzz declared, stepping between the growing fight. He looked back at his best friend who you wouldn't think was radiating with positivity just yesterday.

"Yeah, Buzz is right. Just calm down." Jessie joined in, glaring at everyone. She held out her arms, keeping Rex and Slinky away from Hamm and Mr. Potato head.

"How can we be calm in a time like this?" Mrs. Potato head cried, tightly holding onto her purse. "Bo is gone. Wheezy is gone. What if we're next?"

"Andy would never do that." Buzz argued, looking back at the fight.

"That's what Bo said and she's gone," Hamm spat, narrowing his eyebrows at Buzz. "What are we supposed to believe now?"

"Right now, our only project should be Woody," Buzz fired back, pointing at the cowboy. "Quit worrying about what the future holds for us and let's fix what's happening now."

Everyone became silent, drooping their heads. "Go talk to him." Jessie stated.

Buzz nodded and headed towards Woody, who hadn't said anything in the last few hours. He sat down beside him, staring at the ground ahead of them. "Buzz," Woody began, his voice slightly horse. "Do you know what it feels like to have someone you love slip through your fingers?" He asked.

"No." He replied, looking at Jessie.

Woody let out a sigh, bringing Buzz's attention back to his best friend. "I thought," he began then paused. "I thought having Andy pick you over me was the worst feeling in the world." He stated.

"But," he breathed. "It's not. The worst feeling in the world is knowing that you'll never see the person you love ever again. Never get to hold their hand or hear their laugh." He slowly explained. "I think what I'll miss the most is her smile."

Buzz studied his friend's face, which was now fighting to keep the emotions inside. "I'm sorry." He spoke up, unsure what to say. Buzz had never been good in the comfort department.

"I never got to say goodbye to her." Woody softly croaked. Buzz knew what he had to do.

"You will."

"What?" Woody scoffed, narrowing his eyebrows at his friend. He thought he had misheard him.

"We'll get you downstairs to Bo. You have to say goodbye to her." Buzz declared, his face filled with an emotion Woody had never seen before.

"How? Someone will be bound to see us. There's no way it will work. It's too risky." Woody argued, shaking his head at Buzz. But Buzz just stood up and walked towards the gang, the plan already forming inside his head.

"Alright team, let's get Woody downstairs." Buzz commanded.

"What?"

"Slinky, you distract Andy. Do whatever you can to get him out of the room. Jessie and Hamm will keep watch and make sure Andy stays away. I'll make sure Woody makes it downstairs safely." He explained. Everyone began to agree, all eager to help out their friend.

Andy felt something hit the back of his head. He grumbled, turning around to see a few pencils laying on the floor. As if on cue, Molly's door slammed shut. Andy stood up, chasing down his sister. "Molly!" He shouted.

"What?" She spat, opening her door to glare at her brother.

"Seriously? You resorted to throwing pencils at me? Real mature." He glared.

"I didn't throw any pencils at you." She argued, angry that her brother would even think that.

"Well, I didn't do it to myself and you conveniently happen to be entering your room."

"How could I throw pencils at you from downstairs? I was giving Mom some of my old toys!"

Quickly, Buzz rushed Woody down the stairs, sliding right past Andy and Molly. They rushed into the living room, seeing Andy's box sitting beside the couch. They checked the coast and helped Woody into the box.

Bo looked up, hearing Woody's voice. "Woody!" She gasped, rushing to his side as he dropped to the ground. "Oh, I thought I'd never see you again."

"It's okay, Bo. I'm here now." He sighed, tightly hugging her. They stood there for what seemed like hours. They didn't want to let go. They took in everything about each other.

They sat down beside the open handle of the box, cuddled against each other, watching the sun set. This would be their last moment together. Their last few hours. "Don't leave me here alone." Bo begged, her voice slightly trembling.

"I'll never let you go." Woody croaked.

He looked down, seeing the tears streaming down Bo's face. Her blue eyes stared into his brown ones, sending shivers down his body. The shadows cast on the walls nearly took all of the light from her eyes. "I love you." She confessed.

"I love you, too, Bo." He replied. She sobbed, hiding her face in his shirt, bringing him close. He leaned his head on top of her, holding her tightly. He ran his hand over her head, comforting her as the sun went down.

"You'll be alright. No one can hurt you now," He stated, her cries ringing in his ears. "Just close your eyes. Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound."

"I can't close my eyes, Woody. I don't want to forget your face." She stuttered, her eyes rapidly blinking away the tears as she looked back at him. He softly smiled, his eyes studying her's.

"I don't want to forget yours either, Bo," he replied. "And I won't. I'll think of you everyday." He promised.

"I'll think of you as well and all of the times we've had watching Andy grow." She chuckled as he wiped her tears from her cheeks.

They talked all night, his voice reminding her of a lullaby. She would never forget it, even when it was gone. Before she knew it, she was fast asleep in his arms, safe and sound.

Woody looked outside, seeing the sun beginning to brighten the world. Gently, he laid Bo down, careful not to disturb her sleep. He placed one last kiss on her lips and traced his fingers over her cheeks. "Goodbye, Bo." He whispered.

He climbed out of the box, and rushed upstairs before anyone in the house woke. That was the last time he had seen Bo. But every night, she slipped into his dreams. Just as he promised, he never forgot her.
