Passing Time sung by Heffron Drive ft. Logan Henderson
"Eugene," Rapunzel sighed, slightly pouting. "What's going on? Talk to me." She softly demanded, her small hand trailing on his face, stopping on his chin. Her large green eyes stared into his brown ones, making his knees shake.
"I'm sorry, I-I don't know." He stuttered, his breathing getting louder.
She furrowed her eyebrows, studying his face. She was so lost. "Where were you? Why didn't you come to Lance's party? We were worried sick. I thought something bad happened to you." She rambled, fear now present on her face.
"I'm sorry. I-I should have thought to call or-or text or something. Anything to tell you I wasn't coming." He explained, his strong hands now tightly holding onto her petite shoulders. She could feel him shaking.
"What's wrong? Are you okay?" She whispered.
He wasn't. Well, he was alright physically. His body was perfectly healthy. In fact, he was having a fantastic hair day. But he didn't know what was wrong with his mind. Why was he so hesitant? Why was he acting so strange around her?
"I don't know." He confessed, now studying her face. He expected disgust to wash over her face. After all, he did stand her up tonight. But instead, she softly frowned and lead him towards the couch.
Gently, she sat him down then gracefully joined him. She tied back her blonde hair quickly, her fingers having the complex braid memorized. Once she was done, she placed her hand on his knee. "Tell me what you're thinking. What's got you so troubled?" She asked, concern laced in her words.
He wanted to tell her. God, he would do anything to tell her!
But, how would she react?
She didn't know how his emotions worked.
She didn't know how he was programmed.
She didn't know what he used to be.
He let out a long sigh, running his fingers through his dark hair. No, he couldn't do it. She was so pure, so angelic. The moment she found out what he used to do, who he used to be, she would leave him.
He couldn't risk losing the best thing in his life.
"It's nothing, Blondie. I'm fine." He chuckled, trying to play it off. He leaned back, his arm draping over her shoulders. She stared at him, her eyes traveling over him. She didn't believe it for a second.
"I'm serious, Eugene. I want to help you." She declared, her tone showing she wasn't messing around. Eugene's smile faded as he realized it would take a miracle to fool her. She might be a tad bit innocent, but she wasn't naive.
He leaned forward, his elbows now resting on his knees. "I know, Rapunzel." He mumbled. He stared forward, his eyes catching a glimpse of their picture on the wall. He didn't deserve her. She needed better.
She rubbed circles on his back, trying every form of comfort she knew. "Please, talk to me." She whispered.
"I can't." He slowly replied, only his brown eyes visible now. The house was dim, most of the lights shut off. It was nearly two in the morning. Typically, Rapunzel would already be in bed. But she had to be here for her love.
"Why not?" She asked.
"Because..." He trailed, slightly shaking his head as he thought. "Because manly problems. That's why."
She slightly slouched, her glare studying him. "Mhm."
"Alright, fine! Just because I can't. Okay? I'm-I'm afraid of what you'll think of me!" He quickly defended, his voice louder now. He paused, now looking at the ground. "I don't want to lose you." He softly added.
"Oh, Eugene. You won't lose me. I love you and you couldn't have possibly done anything that will ever change that," she softly comforted, snuggling her face into his neck. He lightly smiled, leaning into her. "Please. I want to help." She quietly declared.
He took a deep breath, his hand taking her's. "Well, before I met you. I wasn't exactly the Eugene you know today," he began, glancing at her. Her green eyes looked at him in curiosity. He had to continue. "I went by Flynn Rider. The world's most daring, most handsome, and most wild bachelor."
"I remember hearing about him," she softly added. "Every man wanted to be him."
"Well, trust me. They didn't know what it was really like," he lightly chuckled. "They didn't know what it felt like inside. How tortured his soul felt."
She nodded her head then laid it on his shoulder. "Please, continue. I promise I'm listening." She stated, rubbing circles on the back of his hand with her thumb.
"Before I met you, I did a lot of stupid things I'm not proud to admit. I took illegal drugs. I had sex with too many women. I used to drink so much that they would have to pump my stomach to get rid of the alcohol. I thought that was how it always was. Everyone's dream. I was looking for the rush that made me feel alive." He explained, getting transported back to another universe that was somewhere far away.
"I just kept getting emptier each day. I lost my way inside the truth. I was trapped in a lie. Each line I took, every shot I tossed back, I could feel myself getting farther and father away from reality," he said. "I watched moments slip through my hands. I was just passing time, waiting for my time to come."
"Then you appeared. If I wouldn't have been in the park that morning, I don't think I would have ever met you or would have ever ended my crazy shenanigans. You took my heart-shaped hourglass and turned it over, giving me more time in my chaotic life. You lit a match and shook me awake." He rambled, a smile growing on his face as he thought of her.
"Yeah, the fire just kept growing when I was around you. You fanned the flames and it burned until the walls of my heart let the light in," he grinned, now facing her. "You took the armor on my chest and tore it open. That how you got to my messed up, broken heart."
"It's not broken. It just needed a little love." She smiled, placing their hands over his beating heart.
"A few times, I've thought about falling back into that dark place. It seemed so easy to wake up, live a fake life, and take a few drugs. But every time I think about it, you come back to my mind and bring me closer. You keep me safe."
"Oh, Eugene." She cooed, smiling.
"You've showed me that there's more to life. You've shown me that we're not just passing time," he smiled. He paused, worry washing over his face. "Right?"
She placed a kiss on his lips. Her hands cupped his cheeks, keeping him pressed against her. He already knew the answer. He needed her tonight. Without her, he wasn't sure if he would have made it.
